Riposi in pace.

 FR. TOM WELSH

Tom Welsh was born in Mossend, Scotland, on 16 January 1950, one of eight children born to Pat and Elizabeth Welsh. After attending Holy Family Primary School and Our Lady’s High School, he began working as a clerk at the Post Office, whilst in his free time he worked as a volunteer at the Wayside Club in Glasgow.

At the Wayside Club he met the Italian Xaverian Missionary, Fr. Emilio Paloschi, and Tom’s missionary and priestly vocation was born as they worked together in the service of marginalized people. On 20 August 1971, Tom joined the Xaverians in Glasgow and began his novitiate year one month later. He made his First Profession on 1 September 1972.
After his Profession he was sent to Finchley, London, where he studied Theology from 1972 until 1976. He was ordained priest in the Cathedral of Motherwell, Scotland, on 25 June 1977.

He was then assigned to work in formation and vocation animation in the community of Glasgow (1977-80).

At the end of October 1980, he left for Sierra Leone, where he remained until August 1984, working as assistant priest in the mission of Kabala. He was then transferred to the community of Chicago (USA), where he continued his studies, obtaining a Masters in Psychotherapy at the Loyola University, and later a degree in the same subject.
During his time in Chicago, Fr. Tom worked with the Shalom Ministries ecumenical group, which served immigrants and poor people, and with communities of Native Americans.

He returned to the United Kingdom in 1991 and was assigned to the Preston community, where he served as missionary animator and, from 1992 until 1997, formator in the same community. From 1997 until 1999 he was a formator in the London community in Holden Road.

He was elected Regional Superior (1998-2006). He moved to Coatbridge, Scotland, in 1999, where he began to work in the sector of Justice and Peace and Global Education.

From 2001 until 2009 he was parish priest of St. Alphonsus, Glasgow. After the inauguration of the Conforti Institute in the autumn of 2009, Fr. Tom was appointed its Director, a task he held until 2017. In the five-year period 2012-17, Fr. Tom was also the Director of Missio Scotland, the Scottish branch of the Pontifical Mission Societies, and was a member of various executive groups, among them the Bishops’ Committee for interreligious dialogue.

After taking part in the XVII General Chapter of the Xaverians, in Italy, in August 2018, his health deteriorated and he was admitted to St. Andrew’s Hospice, where he died peacefully on 16 November 2017, the feast of St. Margaret of Scotland.

May he rest in peace.
