Olga Raschietti, Lucia Pulici e Bernardetta Boggian: tre nostre sorelle crudelmente massacrate dieci anni fa, il 7 e 8 settembre 2014 a Kamenge (Burundi).
La terribile notizia ci lasciava incredule e sconvolte, con un groviglio di interrogativi. Perché colpire in un modo così atroce tre missionarie anziane e fragili, che offrivano in modo semplice e sereno il dono della loro presenza nel quartiere, attente in particolare alle persone più disagiate?
Fonti ufficiali hanno avanzato motivi pretestuosi, totalmente infondati. Una laboriosa inchiesta è stata condotta da una giornalista italiana, Giusy Baioni, mossa dal desiderio di fare giustizia e verità, di contribuire alla costruzione di una pace vera e duratura.
Al di là delle inchieste, che si desidera continuare, vogliamo custodire il senso profondo di una morte che giunge come coronamento di una vita marcata a fuoco dalla passione per l’annuncio del Vangelo, nella dedizione generosa alla gente. Avevano deciso di restare in Burundi, pur con una salute malferma. Da vere figlie di un pensiero di totalità, erano convinte che la consacrazione della vita non è realizzata finché non si dà tutto realmente e con la disposizione di passare dal dono continuo all’olocausto, ove piacesse al Signore (Padre Giacomo Spagnolo). Olga scriveva: Una missionaria muore volentieri nella sua terra di missione.
Prezioso il contributo offerto dalla nostra sorella Teresina Caffi, che ha raccolto nel libro Va’, dona la vita!, confidenze intime, stralci di diari, scritti occasionali delle tre sorelle. Nell’accostarci al mistero del loro cuore ci sentiamo incoraggiate a ravvivare la gioia di una vita totalmente donata, per amore al Signore Gesù, spesa per il suo Regno.
Per felice coincidenza, quest’anno celebriamo la ricorrenza del “martirio” delle nostre sorelle insieme a quello dei nostri fratelli Saveriani e dell’abbé Joubert, beatificati il 18 agosto. Possiamo attribuire anche a loro il pensiero di Bernardetta: È bello, sulle orme di Gesù, spendere la vita per collaborare a costruire insieme pace e fraternità. Sono i germogli che speriamo possano nascere da questi semi sepolti nella terra di missione.
Olga Raschietti, Lucia Pulici and Bernardetta Boggia were three of our sisters. They were cruelly slaughtered ten years ago, on September 7th and 8th, 2014, in Kamenge (Burundi).
Upon receiving that terrible news, we were left disbelieving, shocked and with a tangle of questions. Why strike so heinously three elderly and frail missionary sisters, who were simply and peacefully offering the gift of their presence in the neighbourhood, caring especially for the most disadvantaged people?
Official sources cited specious and unfounded reasons. Instead, a meticulous investigation has been carried out by an Italian journalist, Giusy Baioni, who was driven by a desire for justice and truth, and by the will to contribute to the establishment of true and lasting peace.
However, apart from enquiries, which all wish may continue, we want to cherish the deep meaning behind a death that comes as the crowning moment of a life marked by the fire of the passion for the proclamation of the Gospel and in the generous self-giving to the people. Despite their poor health, they decided to remain in Burundi. As true daughters of a thought of “totality”, they strongly believed that the consecration of their life would not be fully realised until everything was really given and one had become ready to move from continuous giving to the final sacrifice if this were God’s desire. The contribution offered by our sister Teresina Caffi is precious. In the book Va’, dona la vita!, she collected intimate confidences, excerpts from diaries, and occasional writings of our three sisters. As we get closer to that mystery that is their heart, we feel encouraged to rekindle the joy of a life given out of love for the Lord Jesus and spent for his Reign.
By happy coincidence, this year we celebrate the anniversary of the “martyrdom” of our sisters together with that of our Xaverian brothers and Fr. Joubert, who were beatified on August 18th. To them too we can ascribe this remark by Bernardetta: To live one’s life by following in the footprints of Jesus and together contribute to the construction of peace and fraternity is beautiful. These latter are the buds we hope may grow from the seeds buried in mission land.
