(Cassien Nshimirimana sx)
REANA DEL ROJALE – UDINE - SABATO 3 OTTOBRE 2026: “gioia e tristezza insieme…”
Appena arrivati, abbiamo iniziato a studiarlo.

GENERAL HOUSE: NEW RECTOR
With effect from October 4, 2026, Fr Adriano Cunha Lima is the new rector of the General House. His e-mail address is [email protected]
XAVERIAN CIRCUNSCRIPTION OF BURUNDI: A blessing time
From September 29 to October 2, 2026, the Xaverian Region of Burundi marked three significant events, namely: 1) the beginning of the Pre-novitiate; 2) the 31st commemoration of our three martyrs of Buyengero, and 3) the ordinary regional assembly.
On September 29, we were blessed to welcome 20 young pre-novices (7 from the DRC, 6 from Burundi, 3 from Cameroon, 3 from Mozambique and 1 from Chad) during a Eucharistic celebration presided over by Fr Emmanuel Mushagalusa Bwalande, Regional Superior of Burundi.
The following day, 30 September, the Xaverian Charismatic Family travelled to Buyengero to commemorate the martyrs and Servants of God: Fr Ottorino Maule, Fr Aldo Marchiol and the laywoman Catina Gubert. The Episcopal Vicar of the Diocese of Bururi, Mons. Gratien Niyuhire invited the faithful to follow the example of these Servants of God, who were good shepherds.
Finally, from 1 to 2 October, the confreres met for their ordinary regional assembly, a fraternal occasion to review the Region’s missionary activities. (Cassien Nshimirimana sx)
REANA DEL ROJALE - UDINE - SATURDAY 3 OCTOBER 2026: “joy and sadness at the same time...”
We often experience conflicting emotions in our lives: joy and sorrow at the same time. In our community in Udine, we feel joy at the start of a new mission within the pastoral partnership of Reana del Rojale, where we will be moving with the whole community in the near future. New beginnings are almost always filled with enthusiasm and hopes for what lies ahead. In this new setting, Fr Carlo di Sopra will be the parish priest, while Fr Simone Piccolo will be the assistant parish priest; they will take up their posts with a Eucharistic celebration on Saturday October 3, 2026.
At the same time, we leave with sadness, due to the separation from the bond that has been forged over the past eight years between us and the communities of Buttrio-Pradamano-Camino and Lovaria. These have been years of growth and also of new paths which we hope will continue, particularly in terms of fostering a missionary culture. On October 4, 2026, a farewell Mass for the communities will be celebrated in the church of Buttrio.
The town of Reana del Rojale, whose name derives from the presence in the territory of several irrigation ditches, has very ancient origins; evidence thereof is provided by the remains of a village dating back to about 9000 B.C., probably made up of palafittes. (Enzo Tonini sx)
PARMA - MOTHER HOUSE - THE XAVERIAN COMMUNITY ON THE 4TH FLOOR: “A very hot summer, but one full of visits...”
After spending a very hot summer, yet one full of visits from friends and relatives, September marked the start of a fresh beginning for a new year with our Community planning. Over the summer, we experienced some wonderful moments as well as some painful ones. I’d like to begin with the most joyful moments. The summer saw us take part in important celebrations such as First Professions and a priestly ordination. Furthermore, on the afternoon of Sunday 27 September, the confreres of the Xaverian Community on the fourth floor, together with some guests and the support teams working on the IV Floor, organised a lovely party to celebrate some ‘special’ anniversaries: Fr Dario Maso on the 50th anniversary of his First Profession; Fr Franco Lizzit, on the 75th anniversary of his first Profession (having just returned from his home, where he had chosen to organise and celebrate this important occasion in his home town with all the local authorities, including a brief surprise visit from the Archbishop of Udine to offer his congratulations), Fr Francesco Zampese on the 55th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood, and also to mark the birthdays of Fr Osvaldo Torresani and Fr Alfonso Oprandi.
The celebration, with sweets and drinks, was also enlivened by songs, accompanied by Fr José Ángel Aguirre Abaituaon his accordion, combined with brief testimonies from the confreres being honoured. On Monday 27th in the afternoon, the fourth floor also witnessed another important moment with the Eucharistic celebration at 5.00 pm together with the confreres from the Mother House: the farewell to our deacon, Gowin Yohanes Nicolindo Putra, who was setting off for his mission in Spain. Having spent a year serving our sick confreres on the fourth floor, we were delighted to mark this occasion to bid him farewell. After the Eucharistic celebration, in fact, the deacon personally greeted all 27 confreres on the fourth floor. It was a very beautiful and fraternal moment.
The sad moment, however, which united us in grief together with the whole Mother House, was the sudden death of Fr Carmelo Sanfelice. As always on such occasions, we accompanied him to the Father’s house with our prayers, together with his family and the many confreres who had come from our various houses, confident that Fr Carmelo will continue to accompany us from above on our journey towards eternal life. From the fourth floor, we wish you all a blessed missionary journey during this month of October, which is so dear to us all. (Daniele Targa sx)
A GLANCE AT THE PAST AND ANOTHER AT THE FUTURE
Looking back on some of the most significant moments of my journey within the Xaverian Circumscription of Spain-Morocco paves the way for the continuation of my mission within the Family. My experience of almost six years’ service in this Circumscription is divided and defined precisely by my time spent in these two nations that make up its name.
In Morocco, during the first three years of service, the mission was characterised by the novelty, for the entire Xaverian Family, of opening a mission in this predominantly Muslim country. Ever since we settled in Fnideq, and as the project to establish the mission had already suggested, we set out to practise interreligious dialogue as a ‘dialogue of life’, promoting, first and foremost, good neighbourliness, ‘fraternity and social friendship’. Dariya, a dialect derived from Arabic, is spoken throughout the country. As soon as we arrived, we began to study it. We have also devoted ourselves to discovering the culture and traditions of the place where we would offer our witness, rather than focusing solely on proclamation, even though the latter cannot be overlooked. The territory assigned to us—and to which we now belong (Rolando Ruíz Durán, François Saleh Moll, Juan Antonio Flores Osuna)—corresponds to that of the Archdiocese of Tangier, in northern Morocco. It is a "White Africa," a former Spanish protectorate that left behind the legacy of celebrating the Catholic liturgy in Spanish (an advantage for many) …

TOUKRA - N’DJAMENA- TCHAD: EDUCATING, SUPPORTING AND INSTILLING HOPE. A Mission at the service of the Children of Toukra
A new educational complex dedicated to St Guido Maria Conforti has been inaugurated in Toukra, on the outskirts of N’Djamena, Tchad. To mark the start of the 2026–2027 school year, 273 nursery and primary school pupils turned up to begin their first lessons on Monday, September 28th, 2026. Thanks to the commitment of the Xaverian Missionaries and the generosity of benefactors, children from disadvantaged families now benefit from an environment suited to their holistic education: intellectual, personal, moral and spiritual. (Antoine Ntabala Ntamwira, sx)
PARMA - COMMUNITY OF THE MOTHER HOUSE: “I put forward the idea”
I send to the General Secretariat the latest version of my provisional ‘draft’ of a History of the Xaverian Family, which – having received no feedback on my first draft – I have revised, completed and corrected to the best of my ability. However, I need an outline straight away, because there isn’t one available and because I’ve been asked to prepare a short speech for my confreres taking part in the Year of Xaverian Spirituality.
But if I am bothering you again, it is mainly for another reason: just as I was completing my search through the various Xaverian bibliographies in an attempt to piece together the thread of our history, I realised there was a significant gap concerning the most recent developments – a gap that we could and absolutely ought to try to fill, for example, in the run-up to the centenary (2031) of the Founder’s death.
From our past Confreres we received two heavy, bulky and rich volumes:
- AAVV, I Missionari Saveriani nel Centenario della Nascita del loro Fondatore, PR 1965
- AAVV, I Missionari Saveriani nel Centenario dalla Fondazione (1895-1995), PR 1996
What is missing – and now would be the time (the kairós) to start preparing – is a 3rd volume: Various Authors, The Xaverian Missionaries One Century after the Death of their Founder, Parma 2031. I believe this is clearly an urgent task, one that should encompass the History of our Institute and its various missions and works from 1995 through 2031, the year of our centennial. Don’t you agree? So, who could organize and participate in such a colossal yet “necessary” and urgent undertaking? Here, I’m simply proposing the idea and trying to spark some reaction – like throwing a stone into a pond with no intention of hurting anyone, but with the hope that someone might pick up that stone! Ciao. (Antonio Trettel s.x.)
THE MAP THAT REDRAWS THE WORLD
The great revolution in the description of the globe is being driven by Equal Earth, the projection created in 2018 and adopted by organisations such as National Geographic, NASA and various GIS (Geographic Information System) software programmes, precisely because it offers scientific accuracy without compromising readability. It outperforms the most widely used projections, such as the Mercator projection, which greatly distort areas at high latitudes. For example, Greenland appears to be as large as Africa, whereas in reality Africa is about 14 times larger. In essence, Equal Earth illustrates the globe in a way that is true to its proportions. On 4 September 2026, the United Nations General Assembly voted in favour of a resolution promoting map projections that more accurately reflect the actual sizes of the continents. This is not a binding decision, but merely a recommendation to move away from the most widely used maps today (including the Mercator projection), which give the impression that the African continent is much smaller than Europe and North America.
“When it was introduced in 2018, I never imagined it would become the subject of a vote at the United Nations,” explains Tom Patterson, an American cartographer who, together with Bojan Šavrič and Bernhard Jenny, created this new equivalent map. “Our aim was more modest: to provide the relatively small cartographic community with a new projection that was both strictly equiareal and aesthetically pleasing. A map is not just a geographical tool: it can also influence the way we imagine the world. To what extent can a cartographic representation influence our perception of the different regions of the planet? The cartographer has no doubts: ‘People tend to have a geocentric view. The place where we live, however small it may be, is the centre of our world. A map can help us see our local reality in a broader context; we are all an integral part of a vast, wonderful and highly diverse world.’ So what needs to be done now to ensure that this decision does not remain merely a political statement? “I am delighted to announce that Equal Earth’s maps are available online free of charge in 21 languages and focus on different parts of the world,” reveals Patterson, adding that “many more translations are in the pipeline.
“I regard these maps as living documents; they are updated regularly as our world is constantly changing. My ambitious aim is to make Equal Earth accessible to as many people as possible on planet Earth.”
BUKAVU - PIB (Philosophat Isidore Bakanja) - Lectio Inauguralis: development challenges in Africa.
The inaugural lecture at “Philosophat Isidore Bakanja”, where our confreres study, was given this year by Professor Marcellin Lunanga. The topic of the said lesson was "Development at the heart of thought: a philosophical reflection on the challenges of development in Africa". This reflection allowed us to question, from a philosophical perspective, the conditions that can favour or hinder the development of the African continent. Three main questions have structured this lesson: is human nature an obstacle to development? What are the main challenges of development in Africa? And what role can philosophy play in finding solutions to these challenges? The reflection thus highlighted the need to go beyond a purely material conception of development. It also requires a change of mindset, a sound education, ethical responsibility, a culture of the common good, and an ability to think differently about African realities. In this context, philosophy appears as a space for critical questioning: it helps to analyse the root causes of problems, to challenge certain habits and to train people capable of thinking, discerning and acting responsibly. With the celebration of the Eucharist, official speeches and exchanges, the day of September 30th, 2026, marked the inauguration of the new academic year and renewed the commitment of the entire community to pursue its formation mission with seriousness and determination.
