Giovedì 03 marzo 2022, alle 8.30 circa (ore in Italia), è deceduto nella casa delle sorelle Franca e Domenica a Borno (Brescia), il nostro confratello p. Giacomo (James) Rigali. Aveva 80 anni compiuti, essendo nato il 24 dicembre 1941 a Borno (Brescia). In questi ultimi mesi era amorosamente assistito dalla nipote Ivana, infermiera.
Entra in Istituto all’età di 19 anni a San Pietro in Vincoli (1959) dove vive l’anno di noviziato ed emette la prima professione religiosa e missionaria (05.11.1960). Una volta conclusa la sua formazione accademica di base a Desio (1960-1962), compie un anno di servizio di Prefettato a Massa Lucana (1963) per poi proseguire gli studi teologici a Parma. Qui emette la professione perpetua (12.09.1965) e riceve l’ordinazione presbiterale (15.10.1967). In questi anni di formazione teologica è anche a Roma dove ottiene la licenza in Teologia Dogmatica presso la Gregoriana (1964-1968). Subito dopo gli studi a Roma viene destinato a Desio come vicerettore per accompagnare le vocazioni adulte (1968-1969) e poi a Tavernerio come vicerettore e promotore vocazionale (1969-1975).
Nel 1976 viene destinato alla missione del Bangladesh dove vi arriva dopo un anno di lingua a Londra. In Bangladesh, dopo lo studio della lingua bengalese, ricopre vari servizi: parroco a Baniarchor (1977-1981), Direttore del Centro Catechistico Nazionale (1981-1985), insegnante presso il medesimo Centro e Superiore Regionale (1985-1989).
Nel 1989 viene eletto nel XII° Capitolo Generale, Consigliere Generale, incaricato delle Missioni. Vive a Roma dal 1989 al 1995. In questo periodo visita più volte le circoscrizioni saveriane nel mondo. Concluso il suo mandato, vive un anno di aggiornamento nelle Filippine (1995-1996) per poi essere destinato di nuovo al Bangladesh. Nel 1999, su richiesta della Direzione Generale, torna nelle Filippine, per rimanervi fino al 2020. Nelle Filippine ricopre vari ruoli: rettore della comunità internazionale di Teologia, a Quezon City (1999-2005) e vice delegato (2000-2006).
Dopo un anno sabbatico a Manila (2005-2006), e vari servizi di vice parroco, rettore ed economo a Kamias, Quezon City, viene nominato superiore della medesima Delegazione (2008-2014). Continua a servire la Delegazione come parroco della parrocchia di San Francesco Saverio (2013-2016). Per un anno è anche superiore della Comunità di Teologia (2017). Si dedica con passione al ministero missionario, e impara molto bene la lingua Tagalog. Dal 2018 era Direttore Spirituale nella Comunità di Teologia.
Il 5 novembre 2020 ritorna in Italia per ragioni di salute, alternando momenti di servizio pastorale nella comunità di Brescia, all’ospedale per cure e in famiglia.
“In questo anno di novizato…ho trovato di essere molto debole e incapace di mantenere con le sole mie forze gli obblighi che mi assumerò, ma punto tutta la mia fiducia in Dio che sono certo non mi abbandonerà mai. Con questa illimitata fiducia nell’aiuto di Dio, con la volontà decisa a voler prendere sul serio i miei voti…chiedo di essere ammesso alla professione religiosa in questa famiglia missionaria…” (26.08.1960, domanda per la Prima Professione)
On Thursday 03 March 2022, at about 8.30 (Italian time), our brother Fr. Giacomo (James) Rigali died in the house of his sisters Franca and Domenica in Borno (Brescia). He was 80 years old, having been born on 24 December 1941 in Borno (Brescia). He spent the last months under the loving care of his niece Ivana, a nurse.
He entered the Congregation at the age of 19 in San Pietro in Vincoli (1959) where he lived the novitiate and made his first religious and missionary profession (05.11.1960). After completing his basic academic formation in Desio (1960-1962), he served for one year as Prefect in Massa Lucana (1963) and then resumed his theological studies in Parma. Here he made his perpetual profession (12.09.1965) and was ordained priest (15.10.1967). In these years of theological formation, he was also in Rome where he obtains the licentiate in Dogmatic Theology from the Gregorian University (1964-1968). Immediately after his studies in Rome he was assigned to the community of Desio as vice-rector to accompany adult vocations (1968-1969) and then to Tavernerio as vice rector and vocation promoter (1969-1975).
In 1976 he was assigned to the mission of Bangladesh where he arrived after studying English in London for one year. In Bangladesh, after studying the Bengali language, he was appointed to various services: parish priest in Baniarchor (1977-1981), Director of the National Catechetical Center (1981-1985), teacher at the same Center, and Regional Superior (1985-1989).
In 1989 he was elected General Councilor in the twelfth General Chapter, in charge of the Missions. He lived in Rome from 1989 to 1995. During this period, he visited the Xaverian circumscriptions around the world several times. After concluding this office, he spent a year of aggiornamento in the Philippines (1995-1996). After, he was assigned to Bangladesh until 1999. On April, 1999, he came back to the Philippines where he stayed until 2020. In the Philippines, he was appointed to different services: rector of the Theologate in Quezon City (1999-2005), and vice-Delegate of the Circumscription (2000- 2006).
After a sabbatical year in Manila (2005-2006), and various assignments as assistant parish priest, rector, and treasurer in Kamias, Quezon City, he was appointed superior of the Delegation (2008-2014). Then he kept on serving the Delegation as parish priest of St. Francis Xavier parish (2013-2016). He then was asked to be Rector ad interim of the Theologate for one year (2017). He was passionately dedicated to the missionary ministry and mastered the Tagalog language. From 2018 he was Spiritual Director in the Theologate.
On 5 November 2020 he returned to Italy for health reasons, where he was alternating pastoral service in the community of Brescia and medical treatments in the hospital and in his family house.

With this unlimited trust in God's help, with a determined will to take my vows seriously ... I ask to be admitted to the religious profession in this missionary family ..."
