Sabato, 3 ottobre  2026, dieci saveriani ricorderanno il 60° anniversario della loro consacrazione missionaria, il giubileo della loro professione. Come primo della lista,  sono stato pregato di  stendere alcune righe di commento e lo faccio volentieri. Ricordo molto bene quella data. Il tre ottobre a quel tempo era  la memoria liturgica di Santa Teresa di Lisieux, patrona delle missioni. Eravamo un gruppo numeroso di professi, quasi una sessantina mi pare, provenienti dai due noviziati di Nizza Monferrato e di San Pietro in Vincoli. A Parma era in corso il Capitolo Generale, che qualche giorno prima aveva eletto la Nuova Direzione e il Superiore nella persona del Vescovo Gianni Gazza.  Una chiesa stracolma di confratelli, amici, parenti e benefattori, anche se io non avevo nessuno dei miei familiari; una liturgia intensa e partecipata. Ricordo in particolare l’abbraccio dei confratelli ai nuovi professi, un momento di intensa commozione.

60 anni dopo, quale cambiamento epocale: siamo nell’era digitale, la Chiesa ha conosciuto momenti esaltanti e situazioni drammatiche, l’Istituto ha cambiato fisionomia con il declino della componente italiana e l’affermarsi di altri confratelli provenienti da quattro continenti…. La cappella della Casa Madre ora è il Santuario San Guido Maria Conforti. La Casa Madre rimane comunque il Centro Storico dell’Istituto, luogo di accoglienza e di riposo ma anche di formazione per tutti i saveriani del mondo.

Il primo sentimento che portiamo nel cuore è  quello di una grande riconoscenza al Signore per la grazia di aver raggiunto questo traguardo, per il dono inestimabile della fedeltà.  Parecchi del gruppo di allora si sono ritirati, hanno abbandonato la Congregazione, quasi avessero sbagliato mestiere… Desidero ricordare altri che il Signore ha chiamato a sé in modo drammatico:   Francesco Bradanini morto il 2 agosto 2002 e Giovanni Abbiati  vittima di un incidente stradale in Bangladesh il 5 ottobre 2009. Sì, cantiamo volentieri il Magnificat con la Vergine Maria che troneggia nell’abside del nostro Santuario e ci guarda con amore. Tra le ragioni del grazie ci sta evidentemente l’aver vissuto la missione ad gentes, ad extra e speriamo ad vitam. “Benedici il Signore anima mia, quanto è in me benedica il suo santo nome, non dimenticherò tanti suoi benefici, benedici il Signore anima mia!” (salmo 102).  Ma c’è un altro sentimento della mente e del cuore che ci accompagna, un altro salmo che attende di essere pregato: il Miserere. C’è in noi la consapevolezza di non essere senza peccato, irreprensibili, di non aver sempre risposto alle attese del Signore e del suo popolo, di non aver sempre vissuto in pienezza le esigenze della vita cristiana ed apostolica, quelle tre caratteristiche che il nostro amato Fondatore elenca a conclusione della sua Lettera Testamento, n 10: “Spirito di viva fede che ci faccia veder Dio, cercar Dio, amar Dio in tutto, acuendo in noi il desiderio di propagare ovunque il suo Regno; spirito di obbedienza pronta, generosa, costante in tutto e a ogni costo…spirito di amore intenso alla nostra religiosa famiglia che dobbiamo considerare qual madre e carità a tutta prova pei membri che la compongono”. 

Per terminare vorrei accennare a un ultimo sentimento che ci deve abitare in questa circostanza di grazia: nutrire in noi la speranza cristiana nonostante il decrescere numerico della nostra (e di molte altre) famiglia consacrata. Gli italiani stanno scomparendo, in compenso molti altri giovani confratelli dell’Africa e dell’Asia immettono sangue nuovo nel vecchio organismo. Il Fondatore amava chiudere il Te Deum, l’inno ecclesiale del ringraziamento, ripetendo l’ultima frase: “In te Domine speravi, non confundar in aeternum!”  (Renzo Larcher sx) 

On Saturday, October 3^rd, 2026, ten Xaverians will mark the 60^th anniversary of their missionary consecration, the jubilee of their profession. Since I am the first in the name list, I have been asked to write down few lines to comment this event, and I am very pleased to accept this request. 

I remember that day very well. October 3^rd was then the liturgical memory of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, patron saint of the missions. We were a large group of professed brothers – nearly sixty, I believe – from the two novitiates in Nizza Monferrato and San Pietro in Vincoli. The General Chapter was taking place in Parma: a few days earlier it had elected the new General Council and Bishop Gianni Gazza as Superior General. The church was packed with confreres, friends, relatives and benefactors, even though none of my own family were there. The liturgy was moving and deeply heartfelt. I particularly remember the hug confreres gave the newly professed – a greatly moving moment.

60 years later, what a historic change has taken place: we are in the digital age; the Church has gone through exciting moments and dramatic situations; with the decline of its Italian component and the rise of confreres coming from the four continents, the Institute has changed its face… The chapel of the Mother House is now the Shrine of St Guido Maria Conforti. However, the Mother House remains the Historical Centre of the Institute, a place of welcome and rest, but also of formation for all Xaverians the world over. 

The first sentiment we harbour in our hearts is one of deep gratitude to the Lord for the grace of having reached this milestone and for the priceless gift of faithfulness. Many of the group from back then have retired or left the Congregation, as if they had chosen the wrong profession… I wish to remember others whom the Lord has called to Himself  in a dramatic circumstances: Francesco Bradanini, who died on August 2^nd, 2002, and Giovanni Abbiati, who was killed in a road accident in Bangladesh on October 5^th, 2009. Yes, we are happy to sing the Magnificat with the Virgin Mary who is sits enthroned in the in the apse of our Sanctuary and looks at us with love. Clearly, one of the reasons for our gratitude is that we have lived out the mission ad gentes, ad extra and, hopefully, ad vitam. “Bless the Lord, o my soul; and all that is within me, bless His holy name! Bless the Lord, o my soul, and forget not all His benefits” (Psalm 102). But there is another sentiment in our minds and hearts that stays with us; and there is another psalm waiting to be recited: the Miserere. We are well aware that we are not sinless or blameless, that we have not always lived up to the expectations of the Lord and his people, and that we have not always fully lived out the demands of the Christian and apostolic life – those three characteristics which our beloved Founder lists at the end of his Testament Letter, no. 10: “Spirit of living faith which enables us to see God, seek God, love God in all things, intensifying our desire to spread his kingdom everywhere; a spirit of prompt and ready obedience in everything, no matter how costly, … a spirit of intense love for our religious family, that we must look upon as a mother, and a spirit of intense love for all the members of our Society.”

In conclusion, I would like to mention a final sentiment which should stay with us in this moment of grace: we should foster in us Christian hope despite the decline in the number of member of our consecrated family (and of many other ones). The Italians are disappearing, but, on the other hand, many other young brothers from Africa and Asia are bringing new blood into the old body. The Founder loved to end the Te Deum, the Church’s hymn of thanksgiving, by repeating its last sentence: “In te Domine speravi, non confundar in aeternum! (In thee, O Lord, have I hoped, let me never be confounded).” (Renzo Larcher s.x.)
