Proprio oggi un amico mi diceva che lui, a Hong Kong, in una parrocchia, comincia questo anno di catecumenato con 80 catecumeni. Quante persone sono state battezzate quest’anno nelle diocesi italiane?

In Italia – mi trovo qui per un mese – c’è un bisogno estremo di questa proposta.

Come missionari siamo specializzati in questo servizio: dovremmo offrirlo e soprattutto continuare a ‘battere il chiodo’ in tutte le occasioni che abbiamo, per far sentire alla Chiesa Italiana che questa è la via della rinascita. Sarebbe anche il modo per far sentire il nostro carisma e proporlo a tanti, ora che tante forme tradizionali del far missione non suscitano più interesse e impegno.

Quando parlo di questo, mi sento rispondere: “Ma non verrà nessuno”.

Questo pessimismo è ancora più terribile. Intanto prova, metti fuori un cartello, invita e fai invitare. Prega e fai pregare, abbi pazienza, studia, leggi esperienze di conversione e falle conoscere. Vediamo se l’anno prossimo nelle nostre comunità e nelle nostre parrocchie riusciamo ad avere, non dico 80, ma almeno 8 (gli zeri non contano) persone interessate a conoscere Gesù.

Questi inviti dovrebbero poterli fare tutti i cristiani, sentirsi in obbligo di farli.

In una parrocchia della campagna cinese, una domenica, il giovane parroco chiede ai cristiani: L’anno prossimo, quanti catecumeni mi portate? Chi ha detto uno, chi due, chi tre... tanti tra i cristiani hanno risposto. Meravigliatissima, la signora Taiwanese che ascoltava, ha aspettato un cristiano alla porta, e gli ha chiesto: Ma sai chi porterai al parroco l’anno prossimo? Il cristiano ha risposto: No. Poi ha continuato: Intanto comincio a pregare per quelle persone, poi vedo chi il Signore mi fa incontrare, poi cresciamo nell’amicizia...

Just today, a friend told me that he, a parish priest in a parish in Hong Kong, is starting this year of catechumenate with 80 catechumens.

How many people have been baptized this year in Italian dioceses?

In Italy—I'm here for a month—there is a dire need for this service.

As missionaries, we specialize in it: we should offer it and, above all, continue to push forward at every opportunity we have, to make the Italian Church feel that this is the path of rebirth. It would also be a way to make our charism heard and proposed to many, in its original form, now that many traditional forms of missionary work no longer inspire interest and commitment.

When I mention this, I hear the response: "But no one will come."

This pessimism is even more terrible. While waiting for people interested, in the meantime, try, put up a sign, invite others and ask them to invite others. Pray and get others to pray, be patient, study, read about conversion experiences and share them. Let us see if next year in our communities and parishes we can get, I won't say 80, but at least 8 (the zeros do not count) people interested in knowing Jesus.

All Christians should be able to make these invitations, feel obligated to do so.

In a parish in the Chinese countryside, one Sunday, the young parish priest asked his parishioners: "Next year, how many catechumens will you bring me?"
