Il Primo Sinodo Diocesano di Abaetetuba: 60 Anni di Chiesa Particolare, 1961-2021 avviene nel contesto del: Sinodo per l’Amazzonia, che prosegue il suo cammino; il IV Incontro della Chiesa Cattolica nell’Amazonia Legale, che ha avuto luogo a 50 anni di distanza dal I Incontro di Santarém (1972-2022); e i 70 anni di presenza Saveriana in Brasile.

Il Sinodo Diocesano ha iniziato la fase preparatoria nel maggio 2021, e ha poi vissuto il suo momento celebrativo dal 10 al 12 giugno 2022. In questo periodo, passato e presente di questa Chiesa particolare si sono intrecciati nell’ascolto di tutte le comunità che compongono le parrocchie delle tre grandi regioni episcopali. Nel ricordare gli eventi che hanno segnato questi sessant’anni, il Sinodo scrive: “Esattamente il 1 marzo 1961, sbarcavano a Belém i primi quattro missionari saveriani per erigere la nuova Prelatura di Abaeté. Essi erano i padri Leone Occhio s.x., Mario Lanciotti s.x., Tarcisio Facchinello s.x. and Augusto Cardin s.x.. Avrebbero temporaneamente lavorato agli ordini di Mons. Alberto Gaudêncio Ramos, arcivescovo di Belém.”

Il Sinodo Diocesano procede secondo le Direttrici per l’Azione Evangelizzatrice in Brasile e avanza nella realizzazione dei sogni di Papa Francesco, così come li ha modellati nella lettera apostolica, Querida Amazônia (Amata Amazzonia). Il papa sogna un’Amazzonia più giusta e dignitosa, che conserva la sua ricchezza culturale e la sua bellezza naturale, e con comunità capaci di incarnarsi generando una chiesa dai tratti amazzonici.

Pedro Saúl Ruiz Álvarez sx, superiore regionale del Brasile Nord, è stato invitato in rappresentanza della Rete Ecclesiale Panamazzonica ad illuminare parte di questo incontro con un intervento sul tema: “Ciò che lo Spirito Santo dice alla Chiesa attraverso la lettera post-sinodale Querida Amazonia.”  

The First Diocesan Synod of Abaetetuba: 60 Years of the Local Church, 1961-2021 occurs within the context of: the Synod for the Amazon, which continues its journey; the IV Meeting of the Catholic Church in the Legal Amazon, which took place 50 years after the First Meeting in Santarém (1972-2022); and 70 years of Xaverian presence in Brazil.

The Diocesan Synod began its preparatory phase in May 2021, then lived its celebrative moment from June 10^th to 12^th, 2022. During that period, past and present of this local Church intertwined in the process of listening to all the communities which compose the parishes of the three great episcopal regions. While recalling the events which marked the past sixty years, the Synod writes: “On March 1^st, 1961, the first four Xaverian missionaries landed in Belém to erect the new Prelature of Abaeté. They were Fr. Leone Occhio s.x., Fr. Mario Lanciotti s.x., Fr. Tarcisio Facchinello s.x., and Fr. Augusto Cardin s.x. For a period of time, they would work under the leadership of Msgr. Alberto Gaudêncio Ramos, archbishop of Belém.”

The Diocesan Synod advances by following the Guidelines for the Evangelising activities in Brazil and by realising Pope Francis’ dreams as illustrated in his post-synodal exhortation Querida Amazônia (Beloved Amazon). The pope dreams of a fairer and more dignified Amazon, one that safeguards its cultural richness and natural beauty, that has communities capable of incarnation and thus generate a Church with genuine Amazonian traits.

Fr. Pedro Saúl Ruiz Álvarez s.x., regional superior of North Brazil, as representative of the Pan-Amazonian Ecclesial Network, was invited to enlighten the meeting by delivering a talk on the theme: “What the Holy Spirit is telling the Church through the post-synodal letter Querida Amazonia.”
