BRASILE

Grazie a Dio, tutti i saveriani stanno bene e cercano di seguire le indicazioni delle autorità sanitarie. Il Brasile, purtroppo, è attualmente il secondo paese al mondo con il maggior numero di casi al giorno. Ieri, si contavano quasi 20.000 nuovi casi in un giorno e il numero dei morti ha ormai raggiunto i 20.000. In Amazzonia c'è una situazione molto difficile a causa dei molti casi e della mancanza di strutture sanitarie e ospedaliere. Manaus, Belem, e anche le zone di Tabatinga e Alto Solimões dove lavorano i nostri fratelli, hanno percentuali molto alte di contagiati. Qui a San Paolo ci sono molti casi, ma grazie a Dio esiste un buon sistema ospedaliero che facilita le cure. Chiediamo a Dio di aiutarci e di darci la forza di affrontare questo momento di COVID-19.

BITKINE (Ciad)

Abbiamo seguito con tristezza la notizia della morte di tanti nostri confratelli a causa del Coronavirus. Noi qui, non possiamo lamentarci. A Ndjamena e in alcune altre zone, ci sono casi di Coronavirus, ma qui sembra che non ci sia nulla. Per precauzione, abbiamo lasciato il cuoco a casa sua e facciamo noi stessi i servizi della casa, anche se non siamo in lockdown. La vita della gente continua nello stesso modo, tranne per il fatto che le chiese e le moschee sono chiuse. Il mercato è affollato, le strade sono affollate ... Abbiamo ridotto alcune nostre attività, ma continuiamo a muoverci tra le varie comunità.

R.D. CONGO

La situazione in Congo non è molto chiara, con notizie piuttosto confuse e a volte contraddittorie, se non manipolate. In tutto il Paese (circa 80.000.000 di abitanti) c'è un solo laboratorio e si trova a Kinshasa. Alcuni dati ufficiali del 21 maggio dicono che sono registrati 1.731 casi positivi. Quasi la totalità a Kinshasa con 75 morti. A partire dal 20 maggio sera, anche il Nord Kivu si è di nuovo messo in isolamento: nessuna uscita e nessuna entrata da e per Goma via terra o via nave. Le autorità rimangono sulle difensive per la paura che, verso la metà di giugno e dopo tre mesi di incubazione, la pandemia scoppi in modo grave anche da noi. Speriamo siano solo delle paure infondate. 

Per i luoghi di culto, martedì scorso – 19 Maggio -, c'è stato un incontro ufficiale tra i responsabili delle diverse Confessioni religiose con il Primo Ministro. Si aspetta una risposta da parte del Governo almeno per le province non colpite dal contagio. Tutti temono la ressa nelle chiese. Ma del resto la ressa la si trova già nei mercati e nessuno dice niente perché la gente ha bisogno di vivere!

Ci è ancora impossibile prevedere o immaginare quando possa cominciare la circolazione fra le diverse province, via terra e via aria, o con le altre nazioni. Non appena il "de-confinamento" sarà possibile, pensiamo di organizzare il capitolo regionale.

SIERRA LEONE

I casi di Covid 19 nel paese continuano ad aumentare. Secondo l'aggiornamento ufficiale del governo, al 19 maggio, abbiamo già raggiunto 519 casi positivi in totale; 33 i decessi in totale e sono 338 i casi positivi-attivi nel centro di isolamento. Il lockdown parziale e il coprifuoco dalle 21:00 alle 06:00 sono ancora in atto, con la limitazione di tutte le riunioni e attività pubbliche.
I confratelli stanno bene nonostante tutte le attività pastorali siano ancora congelate fino a nuovo avviso. Dall'inizio di aprile, la restrizione ai viaggi tra i distretti del paese ha limitato notevolmente i nostri movimenti e le attività sia all'interno delle città sia nei distretti.
Uno dei confratelli appartenenti alla nostra Circoscrizione è purtroppo ancora bloccato nelle Filippine, a Manila, dall'inizio di marzo.

Brazil

Thank God, all the Xaverians are fine and are trying to follow the directions of the health authorities.  Unfortunately, Brazil is currently the second country in the world with the most cases per day.  Yesterday, there were almost 20,000 new cases in one day, and the death toll has now reached 20,000 victims.  In the Amazon there is a very difficult situation due to the many cases  and lack of health and hospital facilities.  Manaus, Belèm, and even the areas of Tabatinga and Alto Solimoes, where our confreres work, have very high rates of infected.  Here, in Sao Paulo, there are many cases, but, thank God, there is a good hospital system that facilitates care.   We ask God to help us and give us the strength to face this moment of COVID-19.

BITKINE (Chad)

We have followed with sadness the news of the death of so many of our confreres due to the Coronavirus. Here, we cannot complain.  In Ndjamena and some other areas, there are cases of Coronavirus, but here it seems there is nothing.  As a precaution, we left our house cook at his home and do have to do the home services ourselves, even if we are not in lockdown.  People’s lives continue in the same way, except that churches and mosques are closed.  The market is crowded, the streets are crowded … We have reduced some of our activities, but we continue to move between communities.

R. D. CONGO

The situation in R. D. Congo is not very clear, with rather confusing and, sometimes, contradictory news, if not manipulated.  Across the country (about 80,000,000 inhabitants) there is only one Health Laboratory and it is located in Kinshasa. Official figures, from May 21^st – 2020, show that 1,731 have been recorded. Almost all of them are in Kinshsa, with 75 dead.  As of May 20^th, North Kivu has also been in isolation again: no exits and no entrances to and from Goma, by land or ship.    Authorities remain on the defensive over fears that, in mid-June and after three months of incubation, the pandemic will also erupt seriously.  Let us hope they are just unfounded fears.

For the places of worship, last Thursday, May 19^th, there was an official meeting between the leaders of the different religious confessions with the Prime Minister.  All are expecting a response from the government, at least for provinces not affected by the contagion.  Everyone is afraid of  massive assemblies in the churches.   Assemblies are already happening in the markets, and no one is saying anything, because people need to live!

It is still impossible for us to predict or imagine when the movement between the different provinces, by land an air, or with the other nations, can begin.  As soon as the date of the end of the “lockdown” will be decided, we will plan to organize the Regional Chapter.

SIERRA LEONE

The cases of Covid 19 in the country keep on increasing. According to Government official update for Covid 19 per 19^th of May, we already reached 519 total cumulative positive cases; total number of deaths 33; and active cases at isolation center – 338.

The partial lockdown and curfew 9:00 pm -6:00 am are still in place, with the restriction of all public gatherings and activities.

Confreres are doing well despite of all pastoral activities are still frozen until further notice. Since the beginning of April, the restriction to travel between districts in the country has been cramping our movements and activities within the confines of town or districts.

One of the confreres belonging to our Circumscription is unfortunately still stuck in Metro Manila, Project 8, since beginning of March.
