Rivolgendosi agli studenti del Pontificio Collegio Urbano “de Propaganda Fide”, (destinato alla formazione del clero per i territori detti di “missione”), sabato 21 gennaio 2023, papa Francesco ha ricordato che si è “missionari credibili non per un abito che si indossa o per atteggiamenti esteriori, quanto piuttosto per uno stile di semplicità e di sincerità”. La Chiesa è chiamata oggi ad una “conversione missionaria” anche nella Formazione di Base. Nella sua riflessione ha evidenziato tre caratteristiche:

1) Il coraggio dell’autenticità, il coraggio di essere autentici. La nostra vicinanza a Dio e ai fratelli si realizza e si rafforza nella misura in cui abbiamo il coraggio di spogliarci delle maschere che indossiamo, magari per apparire perfetti, impeccabili e ossequiosi, o semplicemente migliori. Presentiamoci agli altri senza schermi, per quello che siamo, con i nostri limiti e le nostre contraddizioni, vincendo la paura di essere giudicati perché non corrispondiamo a un modello ideale, che spesso esiste solo nella nostra mente. Coltiviamo “la sincerità e l’umiltà del cuore, che ci donano uno sguardo onesto sulle nostre fragilità e povertà interiori”. Non abbiate paura di mostrarvi per quello che siete ai vostri formatori. A volte può venire la tentazione del formalismo, oppure il fascino del “ruolo”, come se questo potesse assicurarvi una piena realizzazione. San John Henry Newman, parlando dell’autenticità, metteva in guardia dall’atteggiamento di coloro che “vorrebbero agire con dignità e invece smettono di essere sé stessi”.

2) La capacità di uscire da sé stessi. La vita di fede è un continuo “esodo”, un’uscita dai nostri schemi mentali, dal recinto delle nostre paure, dalle piccole certezze che ci rassicurano. Altrimenti rischiamo di adorare un Dio che è solo una proiezione dei nostri bisogni, e quindi un “idolo”, e di non vivere incontri autentici nemmeno con gli altri. Avete l’opportunità di farlo in questo momento nella vita di comunità, specialmente in una comunità formativa ricca e variegata, con tante culture, lingue e sensibilità. È un dono grande, questo, da cui potete essere arricchiti nella misura in cui ciascuno riesce a uscire dal proprio recinto per aprirsi agli altri, al loro mondo e alla loro cultura. La “gioia missionaria ha sempre la dinamica dell’esodo e del dono; la gioia del dono”.

3) L’apertura al dialogo. Prima di tutto al dialogo con Dio, nella preghiera, che è pure un esodo dal nostro io per accogliere Lui, mentre parla in noi e ascolta la nostra voce. E poi al dialogo fraterno, in una radicale apertura all’altro. Il mondo ha bisogno di dialogo, ha bisogno di pace. Vi esorto a mettervi alla scuola di quei “martiri del dialogo” .

In his address to the students of the Pontifical Urban College “De Propaganda Fide” (intended for the formation of the clergy for the so-called “mission” territories) on Saturday, January 21^st, 2023, Pope Francis reminded that “missionaries are credible not because of a robe they wear or their external attitudes, but rather for a style of simplicity and sincerity.” The Church is called today to a “missionary conversion” in the Initial Formation as well. In his reflection, the Pope emphasised three characteristics:

• The courage of authenticity, the courage to be authentic. Our closeness to God and to our brothers is achieved and strengthened to the extent that we have the courage to take off the masks we wear, perhaps in order to appear perfect, impeccable and obsequious, or simply better. Let us present ourselves to others without screens, for what we are, with our limits and our contradictions, overcoming the fear of being judged because we do not correspond to an ideal model, which often only exists in our mind. Let us cultivate “the sincerity and humility of the heart that give us an honest outlook on our frailties and our inner poverty.” Do not be afraid to show yourselves for what you are to your formators. At times there is the temptation of formalism, or the appeal of the “role” as if it could assure you full realization. Do not be deceived by these solutions, so close at hand, but false. St John Henry Newman, a former student of your College, speaking of authenticity, warned against the attitude of those who “wish to act with dignity, and they cease to be themselves”
• The capacity to come out of yourselves. The life of faith is a continuous “exodus”, an exit from our mindsets, from the enclosure of our fears, from the small certainties that reassure us. Otherwise, we risk worshipping a God that is only a projection of our needs, and therefore an “idol”, and of not even living authentic encounters with others. And you have the opportunity of doing so in this time in community life, especially in a formative community as rich and variegated as yours, with many cultures, languages and sensibilities. This is a great gift, from which you can be enriched to the extent to which each person succeeds in coming out of his own enclosure in order to open up to others, to their world and their culture. The “missionary joy always has the drive to go forth and give; the joy of giving.”
• The openness to dialogue. First of all, to dialogue with God, in prayer, which is also an exodus from our ego to welcome him, while he speaks in us and listens to our voice. And then to fraternal dialogue, in a radical openness to the other. The world needs dialogue, it needs peace. I urge you to put yourselves in the school of those “martyrs of dialogue”.
