(Osservatore Romano, 13 giugno 2024)
As a consequence of war, Sudan has been experiencing one of the world’s most severe and, at the same time, least visible humanitarian crises for more than a year. In Sudan there are at least five million people facing the risk of hunger, especially in the provinces of Aj Jazirah, Khartoum, Darfur and Kordofan.
The conflict, which started on April 15th, 2023, sets the regular army, led by General al-Burhan, against the paramilitary militias of the Rapid Support Forces (Rsf), led by General Dagalo. Escalating violence has caused extensive damage to infrastructures and essential services, including those for the production and distribution of food. This has caused the collapse of economic activities, brought the transportation system to a standstill, and consequently led to the rise in costs of products. (Osservatore Romano, June 13th, 2024)
