Un anniversario lungo 50 anni. Ad essere sincero, non amo gli anniversari così come, quasi, non amo attardarmi su minuziosi esami di coscienza. Meglio tentare di vangare terreno nuovo. Ma un anniversario si rivolge, per forza di cose, al proprio passato. Dunque, guardiamoci indietro. Ho sempre coltivato una grande simpatia per un tratto del tutto originale e furbo della spiritualità ebraica: questi, quando pensavano di aver raggiunto un punto delicato della propria vita e del proprio rapporto con Dio, indietro si guardavano solo per rinnovare rapporti sfilacciati o addirittura traditi. Più che passare al setaccio il proprio vissuto, quasi rinfacciavano a Dio di non aver fatto, Lui, abbastanza, rispetto alle promesse che aveva loro fatto. Sicché, messo di fronte alle sue "responsabilità", Dio rimaneva spiazzato e loro, del tutto rassicurati circa la sua fedeltà alla parola data, andavano all'incasso del suo perdono. Già perché, può forse Dio non perdonare? E ci può mai essere qualcuno che non ne abbia bisogno? "Io ho sentito fin dalla mia nascita che tu, Signore, hai preso Israele… e hai fatto tutto quello che avevi promesso" (Ester). Gesù è andato oltre: di cosa passata ha fatto una santa memoria, anzi un sacramento, memoriale di celebrazione della sua misericordia e fedeltà: "Fate questo in memoria di me". 50 anni di grazia, come una lunghissima Messa.  (Emilio Iurman sx, 50° di Ordinazione Presbiterale, 30 settembre 2023)

A 50-year long anniversary. Frankly speaking, I don’t like anniversaries, the same way that I almost don’t like lingering on detailed examinations of conscience. It is better to dig new ground. Nevertheless, an anniversary inevitably makes you face your past. So, let us look back.

I have always cherished great sympathy for a particularly original and clever trait of Jewish spirituality: when they thought they had reached a sensitive point in their life and relationship with God, the Jews would look back at their past, only to renew loose or betrayed relations; rather than going through their own life with a fine-tooth comb, they would almost reproach God for not doing enough with respect to the promises he had made to them. In this way, when faced with his own “responsibilities”, God would be taken aback, while they would collect his forgiveness, for they were absolutely certain that he was faithful to his word. Indeed, can God not forgive? And can there ever be anyone who doesn’t need His forgiveness? “From my earliest days I was taught by my family that you, O Lord, chose Israel out of all the nations … and that you have fulfilled all the promises you made to them” (Esther). Jesus went further: out of a past thing, he made a holy memory, or, better, a sacrament, a memorial celebration of his mercy and faithfulness: “Do this in memory of me.” 50 years of Grace, like a very long Mass.
