In ottobre, il mese della missione, noi Saveriani celebriamo la memoria dei martiri della nostra Famiglia missionaria; una memoria arricchita dal recente riconoscimento di alcuni di loro che la Chiesa ha dichiarato beati.

Se penso ai martiri, di ieri e di oggi, mi viene alla mente l’immagine di persone che di fronte alle difficoltà e al pericolo non sono fuggite anche se, forse, avrebbero potuto farlo. Persone che hanno continuato a camminare in mezzo alla loro gente, condividendo fino in fondo la loro fede e la loro vita.

In tante situazioni complicate della nostra storia mi torna alla mente l’invocazione dei due discepoli sulla strada di Emmaus, invocazione rivolta a quell’estraneo compagno di strada diventato ormai amico: “Resta con noi, perché si fa sera”. E di fronte a questa richiesta immagino le parole di un martire tra i tanti, p. Ottorino Maule, che risponde: “Noi restiamo con voi”.

I martiri, persone che come Cristo e in nome di Cristo hanno condiviso la storia di un popolo, sono rimaste al loro posto per spezzare il pane della fraternità e far ardere la speranza nel cuore. (Piero Pierobon sx)

In October, Missionary month, we the Xaverian missionaries celebrate the memory of the martyrs of our missionary family; a memory enriched by the recent recognition of some of them whom the Church has declared blessed.

When I think of the martyrs, both past and present, I am reminded of people who, when faced with difficulties and danger, did not flee, even though they could have done so. People who continued to walk among their people, sharing their faith and their lives to the very end.

In many complicated situations in our history, I am reminded of the invocation of the two disciples on the road to Emmaus, an invocation addressed to that “stranger” who had become their friend: ‘Stay with us, for it is nearly evening.’ And in the face of this request, I imagine the words of one martyr among many, Fr. Ottorino Maule, who replied: ‘We stay with you.’

The martyrs, people who, like Christ and in the name of Christ, shared the history of a people, remained in their place to break the bread of fraternity and keep hope burning in their hearts. (Piero Pierobon sx)
