Il prossimo sabato 30 settembre 2023, ricorre l’anniversario del martirio dei “Martiri della pace”, i Servi di Dio p. Ottorino Maule sx, p. Aldo Marchiol sx e della missionaria laica Catina Gubert (sera del 30 settembre 1995, Buyengero, Burundi). Vite donate per il dono dell’annuncio del Vangelo e per la pace tra i popoli in Burundi: “So bene quello che mi può accadere, ma è mio dovere difendere i poveri e gli innocenti…”, furono le parole premonitrici di p. Ottorino Maule, dette a un suo confratello. "Se potessi compiere la mia missione fino alla mia ultima capacità, sarei felice", ebbe a dire, invece, p. Aldo. Dal canto suo, la missionaria laica Catina più volte aveva affermato: “Se mi toccasse di restare vittima di questa guerra civile, a me piacerebbe restare qui. Basta una stuoia, come la povera gente…”

“Posso affermare che p. Ottorino, p. Aldo e la missionaria laica Catina amavano profondamente la gente di Buyengero e per loro hanno dato, come Cristo, la propria vita e versato il proprio sangue. Sono sicura che dal cielo continueranno ad amare e proteggere l'Africa, specialmente i più poveri ed emarginati, gli orfani, gli ammalati e gli abbandonati…” (testimonianza di suor Angélica Guzmán, delle Figlie della Misericordia, la prima persona ad accorrere sul luogo della tragica scena del martirio).

I tre missionari di Buyengero sono stati inseriti nella causa dei Santi che comprende anche l’abbé Michel Kayoya, sacerdote diocesano, poeta e intellettuale, e 40 studenti del Seminario di Buta, Bururi.  

September 30^th marks the anniversary of the martyrdom of the servants of God Fr. Ottorino Maule s.x., Fr. Aldo Marchiol s.x., and the lay missionary Catina Gubert, “Martyrs of peace” (murdered on the evening of September 30^th, 1995, in Buyengero, Burundi). Theirs were lives donated to the proclamation of the Gospel and for peace among the peoples of Burundi. “I know very well what may happen to me, but it is my duty to defend the poor and innocent…”: these were premonitory words that Fr. Ottorino spoke to a confrere. Instead, Fr. Aldo once said: “I would be very happy to fulfil my mission till I have strength.”  For her part, the lay missionary Catina affirmed on several occasions: “If my destiny is to remain like a victim of this civil war, I will be very glad to remain here. I just need a straw mat, like the poor people…”

“I can affirm that Fr. Ottorino, Fr. Aldo and the lay missionary Catina deeply loved the people of Buyengero and, like Christ, they gave their lives and shed their blood for them. I am sure that, from heaven, they will continue to love and protect Africa, especially the poorest and most marginalized, the orphans, the sick and the abandoned...” (from the testimony of Sr Angélica Guzmán, belonging to the Daughters of Mercy, who was the first person to rush to the tragic scene of their martyrdom).

These three missionaries of Buyengero have been added to the list in the Cause of Saints that includes also Fr. Michel Kayoya, diocesan priest, poet and intellectual, and 40 students of the Buta Seminary, Bururi.
