PORT MORESBY - PAPUA NUOVA GUINEA: “COME SI FA A TRASMETTERE AI GIOVANI L’ENTUSIASMO DELLA MISSIONE?”

In Papua Nuova Guinea, Paese dove si parlano 841 lingue diverse, durante l’incontro del papa con i vescovi, il clero, i catechisti e le catechiste, i religiosi e le religiose, un catechista ha rivolto a Francesco la seguente domanda: “come si fa a trasmettere ai giovani l’entusiasmo della missione?”. Nella sua risposta, papa Francesco, ha riproposto l’essenziale della testimonianza cristiana, cioè “coltivare e condividere la nostra gioia di essere Chiesa… Di fronte allo spaesamento e alla stanchezza che molti cristiani sperimentano in alcune zone del mondo, solo la testimonianza di peccatori perdonati attratti per amore fa la missione. Altrimenti la Chiesa diventa un’associazione spirituale. Una multinazionale per lanciare iniziative e messaggi di contenuto etico-religioso. Non si dà più testimonianza di ciò che opera Cristo, ma si parla a nome di una certa idea di Cristo, un’idea posseduta e addomesticata. Si organizzano le cose, si diventa piccoli impresari della vita ecclesiale, dove tutto avviene secondo programma stabilito, e cioè solo da seguire secondo le istruzioni. Ma tutto questo non riaccade mai l’incontro con Cristo. Non riaccade più l’incontro che ci aveva toccato il cuore all’inizio. Nulla è esente da questo rischio: dai progetti pastorali all’organizzazione dei grandi eventi, dalle ‘tecniche’ missionarie per il digitale alla catechesi. Si rischia di dare per scontato l’essenziale, per concentrarsi su modalità, linguaggi, organizzazione.

PORT MORESBY, PAPUA NEW GUINEA: “HOW DO YOU CONVEY ENTHUSIASM FOR MISSION TO YOUNG PEOPLE?"

In Papua New Guinea, a country with 841 different languages, during a meeting with the bishops, priests, catechists and religious men and women, a catechist asked Pope Francis this question: “how can the enthusiasm for the mission be conveyed to young people?” Pope Francis answered by proposing once again the essence of Christian witness, that is “cultivating and sharing our joy of being Church... Vis-à-vis the loss of direction and the tiredness of many Christians in some parts of the world, only the witness of sinners that have been forgiven and driven by Love makes the mission. Otherwise the Church becomes a mere spiritual association. A multinational enterprise that launches initiatives and messages with an ethical and religious content. In this case, Christians do not bear witness to Christ’s work, but speak about a certain idea of Christ, an idea that is appropriated and tamed. The effort goes into organising things, and Christians become entrepreneurs of Church life, where everything happens according to a well determined plan, that is, by following the instructions. But all this does not make possible again the meeting with Christ. That encounter which at the beginning touched our heart does not happen again. Nothing is exempt from this risk: from pastoral projects to the organization of major events, from missionary ‘techniques’ for the digital world to catechesis. There is a risk of taking the essentials for granted in order to focus on modalities, languages, organization.”
