La povertà assoluta in Italia non diminuisce, anzi registra un leggero aumento aggravato dal parallelo incremento della solitudine dei più fragili e degli anziani. Il presidente della Comunità di Sant’Egidio ha tracciato un quadro realista ma non pessimista nella conferenza stampa “Più poveri ma anche più soli” svoltasi giovedì 12 dicembre 2024, nella sede della Comunità Sant’Egidio a Roma. Bisogna ricostruire le reti di solidarietà, amicizia e pace che si sono interrotte, ha sottolineato il presidente. Oggi circa 5,7 milioni di persone, pari al 9,7 per cento della popolazione italiana, vivono in povertà assoluta (sedici anni fa erano il 3,6). Il 40 per cento degli anziani ultrasettantenni in Italia è solo. L’ emergenza abitativa è molto forte. Il presidente, poi, ha rilanciato la proposta di una moratoria degli sfratti per l’Anno santo, come pure l’appello di Papa Francesco ad “aprire le case della Chiesa” a chi ne ha bisogno.

Tra i progetti concreti presentati dalla Comunità di Sant’Egidio c’è la guida Dove mangiare, dormire e lavarsi, una sorta di “Guida Michelin per i poveri”, dove vengono offerti indirizzi utili per chi vive in strada a Roma. L’obiettivo è creare reti di prossimità: si tratta di una guida sempre più ricca, scritta dai tanti volontari ma arricchita anche dal contributo diretto dei senza fissa dimora.

E per Natale, come da tradizione, la Comunità organizza i pranzi per i più poveri, che a partire da quello a Santa Maria in Trastevere vedranno coinvolte in tutta Italia 80.000 persone.

I nostri confratelli Herybertus Jakpen Metta Ndeto, Nicolás Chiza Hombo, Dieudonné Twahirwa e François Shamavu Mateso che si trovano nella comunità della casa Generalizia per lo studio della lingua italiana in vista di iniziare, il prossimo anno, la formazione teologica a Desio, Milano, sono impegnati due volte alla settimana nella pastorale del territorio guidata dai volontari della comunità di Sant’Egidio.

Absolute poverty in Italy is not decreasing; in fact, it is slightly growing and aggravated by the parallel increase of loneliness among the frail and elderly. On this regard, the President of Comunità di Sant’Egidio drew a realistic and yet not pessimistic picture at the press conference “Più poveri ma anche più soli” (“many more poor and lonely people”) held on Thursday December 12^th, 2024, at the headquarters of the Comunità di Sant’Egidio in Rome. “We need to rebuild those networks of solidarity, friendship and peace that were broken down,” the president emphasized. “As of today, about 5.7 million people, i.e. 9.7 per cent of the Italian population, live in absolute poverty (compared to 3.6 per cent sixteen years ago). 40 per cent of the elderly over 70 in Italy are alone. The housing emergency is very serious.” The president then reiterated the proposal for a moratorium on evictions during the Holy Year, as well as Pope Francis’ call to “open the Church’s houses” to those in need.

The list of concrete projects presented by the Comunità di Sant’Egidio include the guide Where to eat, sleep and wash, a sort of “Michelin Guide for the poor” which provides useful addresses for people living on the streets in Rome. Objective of the guide is to create proximity networks: The content of this increasingly rich guide is not only written by many volunteers but also enriched by the direct contribution of the homeless.

According to tradition, on Christmas, the Comunità will organize lunches for the poorest which, starting from that organized in Santa Maria in Trastevere, will involve 80.000 people all over Italy.

Our confreres Herybertus Jakpen Metta Ndeto, Nicolás Chiza Hombo, Dieudonné Twahirwa e François Shamavu Mateso, presently in the community of the General House as students of Italian with a view to starting their theological training next year in Desio, Milan, twice a week are involved in pastoral work in the territory under the guidance of the volunteers of Comunità di Sant’Egidio.
