Si narra che san Domenico abbia chiesto al diavolo perché continuava a girare nel convento. Al che il demonio rispose che riusciva a tentare i frati con successo: in coro, facendoli arrivare tardi e addormentare; in refettorio facendoli mangiare a dismisura e con voracità; in dormitorio facendoli stare svegli fino a tardi e alzare in ritardo. Ma quando san Domenico lo trascinò verso l’aula capitolare, dove i frati si ascoltano, si confrontano, si correggono e fanno comunione, il diavolo voleva scappare, perché, disse, che ciò che aveva guadagnato prima tentando i frati, ora in capitolo rischiava di perderlo!

Commenta Enzo Bianchi: la sinodalità quando diventa comunione fa paura al diavolo e lo sconfigge… è quanto mai decisivo che la sinodalità in comunità- comunione sia sentita dai pastori non solo in senso gerarchico e verticale, non solo come comunione sotto il vescovo, ma come comunione anche orizzontale, nella quale i pastori sono fratelli... comunione che i fedeli devono sentire come dono prezioso da custodire, come responsabilità affidata anche a loro, nell’accoglienza della custodia che il pastore deve esercitare perché affidatagli dal Signore… (testo preso dal Bollettino della Circoscrizione italiana, InformaRegione 169)

Legend has it that St Dominic asked the devil why he kept roaming around his convent. The devil answered that it was because in tempting the friars he was always successful: in the choir, he was able to make them arrive late and sleep; in the refectory, he was able to make them eat to excess and voraciously; in the dormitory, he would keep them awake till late and make them also wake up late. However, when St Dominic dragged him in the capitular hall, where the friars listen to each other, discuss, correct each other and live out the communion, the devil wanted to flee, because, he said, he now risked losing what he had gained before by tempting the friars.

Enzo Bianchi comments: When it becomes communion, synodality scares the devil away and defeats him… It is imperative that synodality… be understood by the shepherds not only in a hierarchical and vertical sense, not only as communion under the bishop, but also as horizontal communion, one in which the shepherds  are brothers among brothers… communion which the faithful must appreciate as a precious gift to be treasured, as a task entrusted also to them, by welcoming the care that the shepherd must exercise upon them because this is the task he received from the Lord… (from InformaRegione 169, bulletin of the Italian Circumscription)
