LA CHIESA CATTOLICA E LA POLITICA IN AFRICA: “È a questo discernimento che il libro ci invita”.

Le Éditions Croix du Salut pubblicano il libro: Chiesa e politica in Africa. Per un’alternativa con William Cavanaugh, scritto dal nostro confratello p. Louis Birabaluge Hakizimwami, missionario Saveriano congolese. Il libro è preceduto da una prefazione di Denis Sureau, direttore della rivista Transmettre ed ex editore della newsletter Chrétiens dans la cité.
Ecco una breve presentazione del libro: Nel libro, il confratello affronta questa complessa questione: «Come ripensare la presenza della Chiesa nella città nel contesto degli Stati africani?» L’autore ci propone una diagnosi pertinente sui punti di forza e di debolezza del suo continente, oltre a suggerimenti di soluzioni.
All’inizio della sua riflessione c’è una domanda grave: come hanno potuto paesi che si immaginavano profondamente cattolici essere teatro di crimini abominevoli? Per rispondere, è necessaria un’analisi senza pregiudizi. Africae Munus di papa Benedetto XVI traccia un ritratto del continente e indica un ruolo politico della Chiesa. Ma secondo l’autore, ciò non basta.
Qui l’opera dell’americano William Cavanaugh si rivela un’alternativa. I suoi lavori ci invitano a ripensare il rapporto Chiesa-politica. Il teologo analizza la liturgia come atto politico e promuove una nuova visibilità della Chiesa che, in quanto Corpo di Cristo, è un autentico corpo sociale. La Chiesa non deve chiedere mezzi al potere, ma svilupparsi a partire dalle proprie risorse. Questi spunti di riflessione non esauriscono la questione, ma sono tali da stimolare la nostra immaginazione teologico-politica. È a questo discernimento che il libro ci invita.

THE CATHOLIC CHURCH AND POLITICS IN AFRICA: “It is to this discernment that the book encourages us”.
The Editions Croix du Salut has published the book “Church and Politics in Africa: Towards an Alternative with William Cavanaugh”, written by our confrere Louis Birabaluge Hakizimwami, a Congolese Xaverian missionary. The book features a foreword by Mr Denis Sureau, editor of the journal “Transmettre” and former editor of the newsletter “Chrétiens dans la cite”.
Here is a brief overview of the book: In this essay, the author tackles this complex question: ‘How can we rethink the Church’s presence in society within the context of African states?’ The author offers a pertinent analysis of his continent’s strengths and weaknesses, as well as suggestions for solutions.
At the starting point of his reflection lies a serious question: how could countries once thought to be deeply Catholic have become the scene of abominable crimes? To answer this, an unbiased analysis is required. Pope Benedict XVI’s Africae Munus paints a portrait of the continent and outlines a political role for the Church. But according to the author, this is not enough.
Here, the work of the American William Cavanaugh emerges as an alternative. His writings encourage us to rethink the relationship between the Church and politics. The theologian analyses the liturgy as a political act and promotes a new visibility for the Church which, as the Body of Christ, is a genuine social body. The Church must not demand resources from those in power but must develop from its own resources. These few points for reflection do not exhaust the issue but are designed to stimulate our theological-political imagination. It is to this discernment that the book encourages us.
