Periodicamente ritorniamo al nostro paese di origine, al nostro borgo… ritorniamo là dove tutto ha avuto inizio: la nostra vita, la nostra appartenenza ad una comunità di fede, la nostra vocazione saveriana e la nostra prima partenza. Mi sembra che il noto proverbio cinese: “un viaggio di 1000 miglia inizia con il primo passo” riassuma bene questi periodici ritorni e ripartenze. La missione, la buona novella, ci hanno portato a fare migliaia di passi, in luoghi diversi a contatto con persone e situazioni che ci hanno di volta in volta permesso di aprire gli occhi e di allargare il cuore. Eppure, è bello e salutare ritornar là dove tutto ha avuto origine. È bello e salutare non solo per noi missionari, ma anche per i nostri genitori e le nostre famiglie, per i parenti e gli amici, e per la nostra comunità d’origine. E riscoprire che nonostante le distanze e il tempo che passa, legami di amore, amicizia, fede e solidarietà rimangono sempre freschi, forti e solidi. E ci si accorge di nuovo che la missione è fatta insieme; che è un evento che nasce dalla comunione, o come si direbbe adesso frutto della sinodalità. Mi vengono in mente le parole che leggiamo nel vangelo di Luca: “Gesù, li inviò a due a due avanti a sé in ogni città e luogo dove stava per recarsi” (Luca 10,1). E penso che quando noi ripartiamo con le lacrime agli occhi e vediamo le stesse lacrime scorrere sui volti dei nostri genitori, familiari ed amici, riscopriamo che è lo stesso Signore che ci chiama e ci invia. E riscopriamo pur nella sofferenza del distacco che sia chi parte sia chi rimane ha però lo stesso obiettivo, la stessa missione. Essere “porta aperta” attraverso la quale tutti sia i vicini che i lontani possano incontrare e seguire il Signore Gesù. Con tanta gratitudine in cuore auguro buon viaggio e buon cammino. Mandi! Periodically, we return to our country of origin and village; we return to where everything started: our life, our belonging to a faith community, our Xaverian vocation, and our first departure. It seems to me that the well-known Chinese proverb: "a journey of 1,000 miles begins with the first step," sums up well these periodic coming back and going forth. Mission and the good news have taken us on a journey of thousands of steps, to different places, in contact with people and situations that have opened our eyes and enlarged our hearts. Yet it is beautiful and healthy to return to where everything started. It is beautiful and beneficial for us missionaries, our parents, families, relatives, friends, and our community of origin. It is good to rediscover that despite distances and the passing of time, our love, friendship, faith, and solidarity have remained fresh, strong, and solid. And we realize again that mission is done together; that it is an event born out of communion, or as we would say nowadays, the fruit of synodality. I am reminded of the words we read in the gospel of Luke, "The Lord appointed seventy-two others whom he sent ahead of him in pairs to every town and place he intended to visit." (Lk. 10:1) And I think that when we depart with tears in our eyes and see the same tears running down the faces of our parents, family members, and friends, we rediscover that it is the same Lord calling us and sending us. And we rediscover amidst the pain of departure and separation that those who remain and those who leave have the same mission. Namely, to be an "open door" through which all, near and far, can meet and follow the Lord Jesus. With much gratitude in our hearts, we wish you a good journey. Mandi! (Joe Matteucig s.x.)
