Durante questo periodo di pandemia, i nostri centri di animazione, sia a Preston che a Coatbridge, sono rimasti chiusi. Qui a Preston è stata una sfida trovare nuovi modi di essere missionari in un mondo “chiuso” e socialmente distante! Mi sono offerto volontario presso un ente di beneficenza locale che lavora con i senzatetto e i giovani, e ha un rifugio per donne. È un’esperienza che mi ha aperto gli occhi: la povertà è ancora tra noi e in ​​Europa siamo molto bravi a nasconderla! P. Bideri ed io abbiamo servito le suore carmelitane con l'Eucaristia quotidiana (venerdì, sabato, domenica e lunedì) e abbiamo anche aiutato le parrocchie locali con rifornimenti vari. Sto cercando di trovare modi per aiutare nelle scuole e nei college organizzandomi con materiali e contenuti online. Il nostro giardino è stato per me una grazia: molte ore trascorse, tagliando, sgombrando e riorganizzando…; un po’ come la mia mente in questo periodo. C’è anche il tempo per riflettere, leggere e rileggere alcuni libri e pubblicazioni di teologia attuali. Ora mi rendo conto che questa situazione sarà qualcosa che rimarrà con noi per molti mesi, se non anni. Il nostro modello di finanziamento non funziona più (viveri, raccolta fondi, offerte) e siamo sfidati-spinti a risparmiare e a pregare, come sempre, che la Divina Provvidenza provveda! (Fr. During this time of pandemic, our Centres, both in Preston and Coatbridge have been closed. Being based in Preston, I have found it a challenge to find new ways of being missionary in a world that is closed and socially distanced! I have volunteered at a local charity that works with the homeless, young people and has a woman’s refuge. It has been an eye opener to see how poverty is still with us and how good we are in the Europe at hiding it in plain sight. Fr. Bideri and I have also been helping the Carmelite Sister with daily Eucharist (Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday) and we have also helped local parishes with supplies. I am trying to find ways to support schools and colleges. And with an eye to the future, looking at trying some on-line content. The garden here has been my saving grace with many hours spent, cutting, clearing and re-arranging, a little like my own mind at this moment. I have also appreciated the time to reflect, read and re-read some current theology books and publications. I now realise that this is going to be something that will remain with us for many months, if not years. Our funding model has ended (supplies, fund raising, donations) and we are challenged to make savings and pray, as always, that Divine Providence provides! (Fr. Patrick Duffy)
