«Giacobbe fu il padre di Giuseppe; Giuseppe sposò Maria e Maria fu la madre di Gesù, chiamato Cristo» (Mt 1,16)
Carissimi confratelli,
la lettura della genealogia di Gesù ci fa capire che Gesù è inserito in una storia di salvezza e nell’attesa di un popolo. Possiamo dire che lui è come il frutto di questa attesa messianica. Non cadde dal nulla. Dio si è incarnato nell’umanità attraverso la lunga e faticosa storia del popolo di Israele.
Questo mi fa ricordare, proprio in questo periodo di Natale, che anche noi siamo inseriti in una storia di salvezza, formiamo parte di un popolo che ha accolto Gesù come Figlio di Dio e Signore della vita. E accogliendolo siamo diventati figli di Dio «non per nascita naturale, né per volontà di uomo», ma da Dio siamo stati generati, è Lui che ci ha dato la nuova vita nel Signore Gesù (Gv 1,12-13) e continua a darcela.
La celebrazione della nascita dell’Emmanuele, cioè «Dio con noi», è un’occasione privilegiata per ricordare, in forma di ringraziamento e di lode, che facciamo parte, per pura grazia di Dio, di una storia sacra, di un popolo santo, che ha per vocazione vivere nella santità (Mt 5,48). E come noi siamo stati accolti in questo popolo divino, tanti altri aspettano che qualcuno dica anche a loro: ‘venite al banchetto del Regno! C’è un posto per voi, perché Dio, nostro Padre, vuole che la sua casa «sia piena di gente» (Lc 14,15-24). E non è questa la nostra vocazione particolare?

The reading of Jesus’ genealogy makes us understand that Jesus inserted Himself in as story of salvation and in the expectation of a people. We can say that He is like the fruit of this messianic expectation. He did not fall out of nowhere. God has incarnated Himself in humanity through the long and arduous history of the people of Israel.
This reminds me, precisely at the time of Christmas, that we too are a part of a story of salvation; we form part of a people who welcomed Jesus as the Son of God and Lord of life. And, by welcoming Him, we have become children of God “not by natural birth, nor by the will of man, “ but by God we were born. It is He who gave us the new life in the Lord Jesus (Gv 1,12-13) and continues to give it to us.
The celebration of the birth of Emmanuel, that is “God with us”, is a privileged occasion to remember, in the form of thanksgiving and of praise, that we are part, by sheer grace of God, of a sacred history, of a holy people, who has the vocation to live in holiness (Mt 5,48). And as we have been welcomed into this divine people, many others are waiting for someone to say to them: “Come to the banquet of the Kingdom! There is a place for you, because God, our Father, wants his house “TO BE FULL OF PEOPLE” (Lc 14,15-24). And, is this not our particular vocation?.
