(Giancarlo Lazzarini sx)

50TH ANNIVERSARY OF PRIESTHOOD: “For me, at least initially, the discussion was over, but not for Him.”

Not everyone is given the joy to celebrate his 50th anniversary of priesthood with the people he loves and with whom he has shared the long journey of life. Certainly, even those confreres who went to celebrate all the graces received from God, including priesthood, in the eternal Reign of the Father are blessed too.

What a gift the Lord gave me! Certainly, it was not because of my merits, but because He realized it in me, even when I was not completely sure in my answer to Him. I remember the time when, for personal reasons, I left the community of Theology. For me, at least initially, the discussion was over, but not for Him. The first thing he made me understand was that the Father would have used me, even with my poverty, to realize his project. And I found a Xaverian community that welcomed me with brotherly love and, in exchange for a small teaching service, allowed me to be part of its life.

I thank all these confreres that for me represented the love of God who was putting me back on the road. After two years, I could resume the journey within the Congregation that I had interrupted and, in 1974, I became a priest together with Mario Menin and received the ordination from the hands of the then Card. Albino Luciani on May 25th.

This happened thanks to Lord’s goodness and mercy and to the brotherhood of the community of Zelarino at that time (Fr. Giuseppe Rinaldi, Fr. Angelo Ulian, Fr. Angelo Pisano, Fr. Angelo Geremia, Fr. Sergio Cambiganu, Fr. Camillo Didonè).

What happened later is part of the life of many of us. One thing I must say: I spent the largest part of my youth teaching both in Parma (for 8 years) and in Brazil (for 14 years). So I have never been a parish pastor. In Amazonia I used to minister a neighbourhood with the Xaverian Sister Natalina, but four days a week I was away because of the teaching I had to carry out in Belém. In the end, calculating the years I spent actively, their majority was dedicated to serving the Congregation: in Parma, in Tavernerio, in the General Direction, in Zelarino, and in Ancona.

I am grateful to the Lord for everything and have no regret, although I must ask forgiveness for my failures and sins.

I feel I am still a missionary and ask the Lord to let me live out the daily Eucharist as a participation in his mystery of salvation for the world. Thanks again to God the Father and to our Xaverian family. (Giancarlo Lazzarini s.x.)
