Nell’est della Repubblica Democratica del Congo è in costante aumento l’impiego di bambini-soldato, una tra le più gravi e odiose violazioni dei diritti dei minori e del diritto internazionale umanitario. Solo tra gennaio e febbraio 2025 — documenta un dettagliato rapporto dell’organizzazione umanitaria Save the children, che ha raccolto testimonianze sul posto — sono stati reclutati ben 400 bambini: alcuni avevano solo 14 anni, mentre altri sono stati prelevati dalle scuole o sottratti ai genitori delle famiglie più povere, esponendoli così a un rischio immediato di violenza e abusi.

I bambini vengono reclutati perché “poco costosi e più facili da controllare e manipolare. Vengono utilizzati non solo per combattere, ma anche per svolgere compiti che gli adulti non vogliono fare e possono essere costretti a compiere atti di violenza o a subire violenze”. La Convenzione n. 182 dell’Organizzazione internazionale del lavoro (Oil), approvata nel 1999, definisce il reclutamento forzato e obbligatorio di bambini una delle “peggiori forme di lavoro minorile”. E lo vieta.

In the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the employment of child soldiers is steadily increasing. This constitutes one of the most serious and odious violations of children’s rights and international humanitarian law. A detailed report by the humanitarian organization Save the Children that gathered witnesses’ accounts in the area documents that as many as 400 children were recruited between January and February 2025 alone: some were only 14-year-old, while others were abducted from schools or taken away from parents of poorer families, thus exposing them to immediate risk of violence and abuse. Children are being recruited because “they are less expensive and easier to control and manipulate. They are employed not only to fight, but also to perform tasks that adults are unwilling to do; children may be forced to perform acts of violence or be subjected to violence.” Convention NO. 182 of the International Labour Organization, approved in 1999, defines the forced and compulsory recruitment of children one of the “the worst forms of child labour.” And forbids it.
