Lo aveva già annunciato il presentatore facendo l’elenco dei gruppi presenti in piazza San Pietro: “Organizzazione Religiosa Madonna della Strada”. Ma, nel salutare in lingua portoghese, l’ha ripetuto per due volte anche Papa Francesco: Nossa Senhora da Estrada. Non è difficile immaginare che il ricordo di questo nome abbia fatto sobbalzare il cuore del papa gesuita. Da studente, infatti, celebrava ogni anno, con fedeltà e devozione, la novena alla Madonna della Strada, l’icona incontrata da Ignazio e dai suoi compagni nella casa presa in affitto a Roma.

San Guido non aveva dubbi “dinnanzi a quella immagine Sant’Ignazio e S. Francesco Sav. effusero i sentimenti della loro pietà filiale” e ne spedì una “artistica copia” ai suoi saveriani in Cina. Ora è conservata nel Santuario San Guido Maria Conforti a Parma.

In Brasile un gruppo di laici si sentono affascinati dalla conoscenza della dottrina Confortiana e della sua esperienza di credente e missionario: l’umanità è una famiglia e l’hanno coniugata con il mandato di Francesco. La Chiesa, cioè, deve percorrere le strade e non rimanere in sacrestia. L’icona di San Guido è diventata il loro punto di riferimento. Una devozione, ma soprattutto un programma di vita: Fraternità universale e annuncio del Vangelo di Gesù Cristo in “lontane contrade” (Alfiero Ceresoli sx)

The speaker had already mentioned the presence of Organizzazione Religiosa Madonna della Strada among the groups present in St Peter Square, but in the greetings delivered in Portuguese, Pope Francis repeated the name twice again: Nossa Senhora da Estrada. One can easily imagine that this name may have rekindled the memory of the Jesuit pope. Indeed, when he was still a student, he used to celebrate every year, faithfully and with devotion, the novena to the Madonna della Strada, an icon which Ignatius and his companions found in the house they had rented in Rome.

St Guido was sure, “it was in front of this image that St Ignatius and St Francis Xavier manifested their sentiment of filial piety”. Conforti would send an “artistic copy” of the icon to his Xaverians in China. Today, the copy is kept in the St Guido Maria Conforti Shrine of Parma.

There is a group of lay Christians in Brazil who are fascinated and wish to know Conforti’s doctrine and his experience as believer and missionary. They found continuity in the ideal of a single human family and the teaching of Francis. Thus, the Church must not remain closed in the sacristy, but must hit the road. St Guido’s icon of the Madonna della Strada has become their point of reference. It is a devotion and, above all, a life plan: universal brotherhood and proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in lontane contrade (distant lands). (Alfiero Ceresoli s.x.)
