“È un po’ che rimando di rispondere alla bella proposta rivolta da un confratello a tutti i Saveriani e pubblicata su SX XaverianNews e sul Sito della DG:  l'immagine-modello della Madonna della Strada come ulteriore caratteristica identitaria della nostra spiritualità missionaria saveriana.

In perfetto stile confortiano, non vorrei che si imponesse alcunché di nuovo a nessuno, ma sono pienamente d'accordo con la proposta, tanto più che, come ricorda lo stesso confratello, abbiamo anche una riproduzione specificamente e significativamente 'saveriana' dell'immagine  appartenente ai gesuiti di Roma nel quadro che fu inviato e 'salvato' dalla Cina! 

A me piace ricordare anche, come dicono i biografi, che quando Conforti andava a Roma, una delle sue 'visite' predilette era la Chiesa del Gesù, non solo per inchinarsi davanti alla 'gloria' di Ignazio e per venerare il braccio del Saverio, ma anche per pregare nella piccola cappella davanti alla Madonna della Strada, appunto! “For some time, I have been postponing answering the beautiful proposal made by a confrere to all Xaverians. His proposal was posted on SX XaverianNews and on the GD’s Website. It was about adopting the image-model of Mary, Madonna of the Road as another trait qualifying our Xaverian missionary spirituality. Although, in line with Conforti’s style, I do not ask for impositions, I fully agree with that proposal, much so because, as the same confrere reminds us, we Xaverians have a particularly meaningful copy of the image belonging to the Roman Jesuits; our copy is the very painting that was sent to and then “saved” from China.

I also like to recall that, as his biographers relate, whenever Conforti went to Rome, one of his favourite ‘visits’ was that to the Church of the Gesù (Chiesa del Gesù). There, he would not only bow in front of St Ignatius’ glory and venerate St Francis Xavier’s arm, but also go in the little chapel to pray in front of the image of Mary, Madonna of the Road.
