Di buon mattino, il 2 agosto 2022, siamo partiti dalla foresteria del Monastero di Buta, dove abbiamo trovato alloggio, per recarci al Capoluogo della Diocesi di Bururi, dove, quasi 27 anni fa, furono uccisi p. Ottorino Maule sx, p. Aldo Marchiol sx e Catina Gubert. A Buta, invece, furono trucidati i quaranta seminaristi. Nonostante il freddo e l’ora, lungo la strada verso la cattedrale abbiamo incontrato molta gente che si recava alla Messa. Giunti in chiesa, grande è stata la nostra sorpresa: il popolo di Dio ha risposto numeroso a questo evento inedito nella Chiesa del Burundi. Tre Vescovi presenti, numerosi preti e suore, gente comune e autorità civili della Provincia di Bururi: la chiesa Cattedrale per poco non era completamente piena. È stato davvero un giorno importante.
Nell’omelia, Mons. Niciteretse Salvator ha riaffermato con forza che è il rifiuto della vita nuova derivante dall’accoglienza del Vangelo la causa della morte di questi fratelli ritenuti martiri. Parlando dei nostri missionari di Buyengero, il vescovo ha ricordato che essi avevano lasciato il loro paese, più sviluppato del Burundi, solo perché mossi dal desiderio di condividere con il popolo burundese la gioia di essere figli di Dio. Dopo l’omelia, è avvenuto il rito di chiusura di questa sessione dell’inchiesta diocesana. Esso è stato scandito: dalla lettura e firma del decreto di chiusura da parte del Vescovo di Bururi, che lo invia al Cardinale Prefetto del Dicastero delle Cause dei santi; e dal giuramento del Postulatore Generale di far giungere a Roma gli atti dell'inchiesta garantendone l’integrità. Poi il Consigliere Generale P. Fabien Kalehezo ha dato lettura pubblica della lettera del Padre Generale che ha ringraziato tutti coloro che si sono impegnati per raggiungere questa tappa del processo.
Abbiamo concluso la celebrazione eucaristica dopo aver ascoltato il grido dell’Arcivescovo di Gitega, Bonaventure Nahimana, dalla cui diocesi è originario il capolista dei nostri servi di Dio don Michel Kayoya: “Non lasciamo morire invano questi nostri fratelli; essi hanno scelto di dare la loro vita proprio per testimoniare ciò di cui il Burundi ha di più bisogno: la fraternità, il perdono-riconciliazione e la pace”. Ha invitato a pregare non soltanto perché il processo raggiunga lo scopo desiderato, ma soprattutto perché il loro sangue versato susciti la conversione tra i burundesi facendoli vivere da fratelli gioiosi di camminare insieme. Very early in the morning of August 2nd, 2022, we left our lodgings in the guest quarters of the Monastery in Buta and headed for the capital of the Diocese of Bururi, where, almost 27 years ago, Fr. Ottorino Maule s.x., Fr. Aldo Marchiol s.x. and Mrs. Catina Gubert were murdered. Instead, in Buta forty seminarians were slain. Despite the cold and the very early hour, we met many people along the road to the cathedral. Upon arriving to the church, we discovered with much surprise that God’s people had joined in great number in this quite unusual event for the Church of Bururi; in fact, the Cathedral was almost completely full. It has been a really important day.
In his homily, Msgr. Salvator Niciteretse stressed once again that the death of these brothers, whom we consider martyrs, was caused by someone’s refusal of the new life that comes from welcoming the Gospel. While talking of our missionary in Buyengero, the bishop recalled how they had left their country, a place more developed than Burundi, for the sole purpose of sharing with the Burundians the joy to be God’s children. After the homily, the rite of closure of this session of the diocesan inquiry was performed. It included: the reading and signing of the Decree of Closure by the Bishop of Bururi, who sends it to the Cardinal Prefect of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints; then, the General Postulator’s oath promising to bring to Rome the acts of the inquiry in their entirety. Following, General Council Fr. Fabien read to all a letter by Father General, in which he thanked everyone who contributed actively to the realisation of this first phase of the canonization process.
Before the end of the Eucharistic celebration, we listened to the cry of the Archbishop of Gitega, Bonaventure Nahimana, from whose diocese came Fr. Michel Kayoya, the first in the our list of Servants of God: “Let us not allow the death of these brothers of ours to be vain; they chose to give up their life to witness what Burundi is most in need of: fraternity, forgiveness and reconciliation, and peace.” He urged everyone to pray for the realization of the purpose of the canonization process, and above all pray that the blood they shed may bring about conversion among the Burundians, so that they may live as brothers that walk together joyfully.
