Martedì 24 febbraio 2026 il governatore dello Stato di Jalisco, Messico, ha revocato il codice rosso che imponeva il coprifuoco e la sospensione di tutte le attività dopo le violenze scoppiate domenica 22 febbraio 2026 nello Stato e in altre città del Paese dopo l’uccisione, da parte delle forze dell’ordine, di Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, capo indiscusso del Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación, una delle bande di narcotrafficanti più potenti in assoluto. Questo però non vuol dire che in Messico sia tornata la normalità.

Gli attacchi, gli attentati e le sparatorie dei giorni scorsi si sono moltiplicati anche in altri Stati: Michoacán, Guanajuato, Zacatecas e in alcune zone molto popolate dello Stato del Messico. Un’epidemia di violenze che, stando agli ultimi bilanci aggiornati, ha provocato la morte di 25 membri dell’esercito e della Guardia nazionale e di 70 membri del cartello criminale.

Sergio Omar Sotelo Aguilar, sacerdote messicano, giornalista e direttore del Centro cattolico multimediale, da anni impegnato nella lotta alla criminalità organizzata e alla corruzione afferma: il Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación, guidato da Osegura Cervantes, ha esteso il suo potere in 21 Stati del Paese e in 70 nazioni del mondo. Per diverso tempo il governo federale ha lottato per contenere l'avanzata e il rafforzamento delle organizzazioni criminali; tuttavia, il loro potere corruttivo è riuscito ad infiltrarsi anche in alcune amministrazioni politiche e in alcuni altri enti pubblici. Negli ultimi anni, la pressione esercitata dall’opinione pubblica e dal governo degli Stati Uniti ha rinvigorito la spinta al contrasto delle illegalità portando ad operazioni diffuse come quella che ha permesso l’uccisione di “El Mencho”. Il crimine organizzato si è rafforzato in modo inaudito, il suo potere è tale che esistono Stati che sono praticamente governati dai cartelli. Il potere militare ed economico del narcotraffico ha generato le proprie norme di governance, le proprie strutture economiche e ha imposto una cultura che promuove il narcotraffico come stile di vita. La narcoeconomia, la narcopolitica e la narcocultura, permeando ampi settori della vita sociale comunitaria, non hanno risparmiato nemmeno la Chiesa locale. Lo dimostra l’aumento degli attacchi contro persone vicine alla Chiesa, alle sue parrocchie e alle sue strutture. Tuttavia, oggi più che mai, l'azione pastorale è più forte e coerente con l’annuncio del Vangelo. Certamente, c'è il timore della violenza ma c'è anche una fede incrollabile che spinge e fa avanzare i processi pastorali.

On Tuesday, February 24^th, 2026, the Governor of the State of Jalisco in Mexico revoked the red code imposing a curfew and the stop to all activities. The measure was taken to contain an outburst of violence that took place on Sunday, February 22^nd, 2026, in that State and other cities of the Country, in retaliation for the killing of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes by law enforcement agents. Oseguera Cervantes was the unchallenged head of the Jalisco Cartel Nueva Generación, one of the most powerful drug trafficking gangs ever. However, the lifting of the red code does not indicate a return to normality in Mexico.

The attacks, bombings and shootings of recent days have multiplied also in other States: Michoacán, Guanajuato, Zacatecas and in some much populated areas of the State of Mexico. It has been an epidemic of violence which, according to the latest figures, has resulted in the deaths of 25 members of the army and National Guard and 70 members of the criminal cartel.

According to Fr. Servio Omar Sotelo Aguila, a Mexican priest, journalist and Director of the Catholic Multimedia Centre who for many years has been committed to fighting organised crime and corruption: “The Jalisco Cartel Nueva Generación, under the leadership of Osegura Cervantes, has expanded its power in 21 of the Country’s States and in 70 nations around the world. For quite some time, the federal government has struggled to contain the advance and strengthening of criminal organisations; however, their corrupting influence has managed to infiltrate some political administrations and other public bodies. In recent years, pressure from public opinion and the US government has reinvigorated the drive to combat illegal activities, leading to widespread operations such as the one that resulted in the killing of “El Mencho”. Organised crime has grown stronger than ever before; it has so much power that some States are practically governed by cartels. The military and economic power of drug trafficking has developed its own rules of governance and economic structures, and has imposed a culture that promotes drug trafficking as a way of life. The narco-economy, narco-politics and narco-culture, that permeate large sectors of community social life, have not spared even the local Church as proved by the increase in attacks against people close to the Church, its parishes and structures. Nevertheless, today more than ever, the pastoral action is stronger and consistent with the proclamation of the Gospel. Certainly, there is fear of violence, but there is also unshakeable faith that drives and advances pastoral processes.
