Giovedì 2 maggio 2024, il Card. Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Patriarca di Gerusalemme, ha tenuto una lectio magistralis presso l’Aula Paolo VI dell’Università Lateranense. Il tema della sua lezione era “Caratteri e criteri di una Pastorale della Pace”, durante la quale ha offerto una testimonianza sugli sforzi dei cristiani in Terra Santa per essere portatori di speranza e agenti di cambiamento in una regione segnata da dolorosi conflitti, una “terra sanguinante”. Con realismo e profondità, il Cardinale ha descritto il cammino impegnativo verso la pace, ispirandosi all’evocativa narrazione biblica dell’incontro tra Giacobbe ed Esaù, suo fratello/nemico. Giacobbe, dopo aver “lottato” con Dio, esce sconfitto (zoppicante) ma allo stesso tempo vittorioso, perché “ha visto il volto di Dio”.
Solo dopo aver contemplato il volto del Signore ed essere consapevole “delle proprie ferite” si può andare verso il fratello/nemico e poter dire come Giacobbe: “ho visto il tuo volto come si vede il volto di Dio”. Questo, secondo il cardinale, è il cammino verso la pace, che non potrà essere percorso senza Dio e che può trovare in un impegno comune tra religioni presenti in Terra Santa una risposta più efficace e creativa. Per finire, ha spiegato come la pace sarà frutto dell’incontro faticoso ma indispensabile di tre elementi: “perdono, verità e giustizia”. (Adriano Cunha Lima sx)
LECTIO MAGISTRALIS – LATERAN UNIVERSITY: "TYPES AND CRITERIA OF A PASTORAL MINISTRY OF PEACE"
On Thursday, May 2, 2024, Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Patriarch of Jerusalem, held a lectio magistralis at the Paul VI Hall of the Lateran University. The theme of his lecture was "Types and Criteria of a Pastoral Ministry of Peace." He testified on the efforts of Christians in the Holy Land to be bearers of hope and agents of change in a region marked by painful conflicts, a " bleeding land." With realism and depth, the Cardinal described the challenging path toward peace, drawing inspiration from the evocative biblical narrative of the encounter between Jacob and Esau, his brother/enemy. Jacob, after "wrestling" with God, emerges defeated (limping) but at the same time victorious because "he has seen the face of God."
Only after contemplating the face of the Lord and being aware of "one's wounds" can one move towards one's brother/enemy and be able to say, like Jacob: "I have seen your face as one sees the face of God." This, according to the Cardinal, is the path towards peace. It cannot be traveled without God, and a more effective and creative response must be found in a shared commitment between religions in the Holy Land. In the end, he explained how peace will be the fruit of the arduous but indispensable encounter of three elements: "forgiveness, truth, and justice." (Adriano Cunha Lima, sx)
