Tempo fa si parlava molto del Marocco, grazie ai Mondiali, ma ora a causa del terremoto avvenuto la notte dell'8 settembre 2023, le notizie che vengono dal popolo marocchino sono cariche di sofferenza, morte e disperazione, in particolare nelle regioni più svantaggiate. Una piccola città è stata completamente coperta dalle macerie. Lunedì 11 settembre 2023 si contavano già 2.122 morti e 2.421 feriti. Molti i dispersi. L'epicentro si è verificato a 71 chilometri a sud-ovest di Marrakech. Le città più colpite sono Al Haouz e Taroudant.

La diocesi di Rabat ha immediatamente rilasciato un comunicato esprimendo tutta la vicinanza in questo dolore immane, informando che per il momento non si registravano vittime nella minoranza cristiana, benché si siano verificati importanti danni in una chiesa. La solidarietà si è subito fatta presente attraverso la Caritas e anche l’Ordine dei Carmelitani di Tangeri. Molti religiosi e religiose, infatti, si sono recati presso i centri di raccolta per donare il proprio sangue.

A Fnideq, al nord, sulla costa mediterranea, non abbiamo sentito nulla. A Tetouan, invece, le scosse sono state avvertite. Domenica 10 settembre 2023 abbiamo celebrato l'Eucaristia per tutte le vittime e, nella preghiera del mezzogiorno, abbiamo pregato per i defunti e le vittime in tutte le moschee del Regno del Marocco. Stiamo ricevendo molti messaggi di solidarietà, preghiera e preoccupazione. Some time ago, there was much talk about Morocco because of the soccer World Cup; however, now, following the earthquake that occurred during the night of September 8^th, 2023, the news we receive about the Moroccan people are full of suffering, death and hopelessness, in particular the pieces of news coming from less advantaged regions. A small town was completely reduced to rubble. On Monday, September 11^th, 2023, there were already 2,122 dead and 2,421 injured. Many people are still missing. The epicentre was 71 kilometres south-west of Marrakech. The most hit cities are Al Haouz and Taroudant.

The diocese of Rabat immediately released a statement expressing sympathy for the victims in the midst of such huge pain, and informing that for the time being there were no news of victims among the Christian minority, although significant damage had occurred to a church. Caritas and the Carmelitan Order of Tangeri were the first to manifest solidarity; in fact, many men and women religious went to blood collection centres to donate their blood.

In Fnideq, which is located in the north on the Mediterranean coast, we did not perceive anything. Instead, in Tetouan the tremors were felt. On Sunday, September 10^th, 2023, we celebrated Mass for all the victims and, during our midday prayer, we remembered all the deceased and casualties in all the Mosques of the Kingdom of Morocco. We keep receiving many messages of solidarity, prayer and concern.
