La prima chiesa a Sheshan, Shanghai, fu costruita quando la comunità gesuita e i fedeli di Shanghai stabilirono una cappella per onorare un voto fatto a Nostra Signora che protesse la Chiesa nel meridione durante le rivolte anti cristiane e contro i missionari stranieri nel 19mo secolo.

Il papa emerito Benedetto XIV nel 2007 ha composto personalmente una preghiera a Nostra Signora di Sheshan. E nella sua lettera, Benedetto XIV stabilì il 24 maggio, festa di Maria Aiuto dei Cristiani e memoria della Basilica di Sheshan, quale Giornata Mondiale di Preghiera per la Chiesa in Cina. Nostra Signora di Sheshan è diventata un ponte tra la Chiesa Universale e la Chiesa in Cina, la quale combatte per poter praticare la fede e mantenere la sua comunione con “tutto il corpo.”

Durante la pandemia di Covid-19, l’amore dei fedeli cinesi per Maria si è nuovamente manifestato quando sono stati costretti a pregare il Rosario quotidianamente nelle proprie case a causa delle limitazioni imposte ai raduni e alle celebrazioni eucaristiche. 

Nostra Signora di Sheshan che ha accompagnato la Chiesa attraverso molte sofferenze, viaggerà insieme ai fedeli anche attraverso le difficoltà prodotte dalla pandemia: chiusura delle chiese, disoccupazione, isolamento, ansietà, ecc.

Nostra Signora di Sheshan è motivo di consolazione e speranza per i cattolici cinesi che chiedono e implorano la grazia di vivere una vita cristiana in un luogo ostile al cristianesimo. Le vicende dei primi apostoli stanno nuovamente capitando nella terra cinese dove forme diverse di persecuzione mi ricordano costantemente delle parole “Io sono quel Gesù che tu perseguiti” (At. 9, 4-5).

Perché Maria è mia madre e comprende i dolori e le fatiche di questo suo figlio, della Chiesa e della missione, pongo continuamente la mia crescita personale, la mia formazione e passione per la missione nelle sue mani: lei non mi abbandonerà mai. (K.S.F. Simon sx)

The first church in Shanghai Sheshan was built when the Jesuit community and the faithful in Shanghai established a chapel for repaying their vow to Our Lady, who protected the Church in the south from anti-Christians and anti-foreign missionaries riots of the nineteenth century. 

Pope Emeritus Benedict XIV personally composed a prayer to Our Lady of Sheshan in 2007. And in his letter, Benedict XVI made May 24, which is the feast of Mary Help of Christians and Memorial Day of Sheshan Basilica, the World Day of Prayer for the Church in China. Our Lady of Sheshan has become a “bridge” connecting the Universal Church with the Church in China, which struggles to practice the faith and maintain its communion with the “whole body.”

During the Covid-19 pandemic, the Chinese faithful’s love for Mary is manifested again when they are encouraged to pray the Rosary daily at home due to the limitations to gather together and celebrate the Eucharist. 

As Our Lady of Sheshan is a figure accompanying the Church through hardships, she also journeys with the faithful to get through all the difficulties the pandemic has brought: the closure of churches, lack of jobs, isolation, distress, etc.

Our Lady of Sheshan is a source of consolation and hope for Chinese Catholics, who are wondering and asking for the grace to live a Christian life in a place resistant to Christianity. The stories of the early apostles are happening again in Chinese land, because different forms of persecution constantly remind me of the words “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting” (Acts 9:4-5). 

Because Mary has been my mother, and she understands the pain and toil for his Son, the Church, and the mission, I continuously put my personal growth, formation, and passion for the mission into her hands, and she has never abandoned me. (K.S.F, Simon s.x.)
