A 25 anni dal martirio dei 7 monaci di Tibhirine in Algeria (26-27 marzo 1996), l'intuizione di quella comunità continua oggi a Midelt, in Marocco (sulla catena montuosa dell'Atlante), dove una piccola comunità di monaci cistercensi vive nella preghiera, nella semplicità, nel lavoro e nell'amicizia fraterna con i vicini musulmani. Dal 2000, infatti, il Monastero Notre Dame de l’Atlas di Midelt (situato nel cuore della popolazione berbera ed interamente musulmana) ospita una piccola comunità di monaci della Stretta Osservanza (Trappisti), nata da Tibhirine. È questa la comunità che i due sopravvissuti di Tibhirine avevano raggiunto : Padre Amédée, morto nel 2008, et Padre Jean Pierre Schumacher.

Il video mostra come le relazioni con i vicini, la cui ospitalità è una tradizione ancestrale, siano frequenti e di una grande semplicità. Alle relazioni normali o di lavoro si aggiungono incontri e inviti reciproci in occasione di avvenimenti famigliari o di feste. Di particolare importanza è la testimonianza della dimensione orante nella vita dei monaci a Midelt.

Ecco quanto condivide il priore della comunità: “Se questa presenza gratuita di amicizia è da offrire dappertutto, forse in questo momento più particolarmente è da offrire nei paesi musulmani , perché c’è troppa diffidenza da una parte e dall’altra. In nome dell’amicizia, non possiamo abbondonare il “nemico”, se veramente l’amicizia è forte. Rimaniamo con lui, rischiamo con lui. Si può parlare di vera amicizia se nel momento del pericolo si fanno le valige e si va via?”

Today, 25 years after the martyrdom of seven monks in Tibhirine, Algeria (March 26^th-27^th, 1996), the intuition of that community remains alive in Midelt, Morocco (on the Atlas Mountain Range), where a small community of Cistercian monks lives a simple life of prayer, work and friendship with their Muslim neighbours. The video shows how the relationships with neighbours, whose hospitality is an ancestral tradition, are frequent and very simple. Apart from normal encounters or working relationships, there are meetings and mutual invitations to family celebrations or on festivals. The dimension of prayer in the life of the monks of Midelt is a particularly important form of witness.

Here is the testimony shared by the prior of the community: “While friendship must be offered freely everywhere, at this moment, perhaps, it must be offered particularly in Muslim countries, for there is too much mistrust on both sides. In the name of friendship – if friendship is really strong –, we must not abandon our “enemy”. On the contrary, we remain with him, we take risks with him. Can we speak of true friendship if in the moment of danger we pack up and go away?”
