Dalle “Missioni Estere” alla missione “Ad gentes”: un cammino post-conciliare ancora da cercare-trovare e percorrere insieme?

1.     Le “Missioni Estere” preconciliari: predicare-battezzare per “salvare le anime”...

2.     Il Concilio Vaticano II le mette in crisi: cfr Lumen Gentium, Ad gentes, Gaudium et Spes.

3.     Gesù nel Vangelo già ci dava/dà ben altri esempi e prospettive: cfr Luca 10, 1-12 e...

4.     Il post-Concilio rilancia la Missione universale della Chiesa: Fratelli tutti, Laudato sii...

5.     Giovanni-Paolo II identifica 3 forme specifiche diverse, con finalità e modalità diverse di ‘missione universale’ della Chiesa:  a) Ad gentes, nei mondi non-cristiani; b) Pastorale missionaria, nelle/per le Comunità cristiane; c) Nuova evangelizzazione, negli ambienti post-cristiani.

6.     Quali i nuovi connotati specifici della Missione ‘Ad gentes’, oggi? Un esempio:  cfr Giuseppe MOROTTI, Rilanciamo la Speranza. Esperienze di incontro tra cristiani e musulmani, EMI :

-        Non partire da discussioni dottrinarie e teologiche.

-        Favorire rapporti di amicizia e di fiducia reciproca.

-        Mantenersi fedeli alla propria identità senza assolutizzarla.

-        Unirsi per promuovere l’umano nella vita di ogni giorno.

-        Non transigere sui diritti fondamentali di ogni persona.

-        Il faticoso sforzo di integrarsi senza assimilarsi.

-        Impegnarsi per instaurare relazioni economiche, politiche (sociali e culturali) più giuste a livello mondiale...

 7.      E ... “quando il Signore vuole, se possibile” (Francesco d’Assisi), condividere con i fratelli la bella Notizia della Speranza del mondo che ti abita dentro: Cristo Gesù.

Come famiglia Saveriana, stiamo camminando ‘verso’...? Sono vecchiotto, un po’ sordo e cieco, ma non vedo né sento grandi sommovimenti, purtroppo! ... Né per centrare più decisamente il “Fine”, né per rinnovare a fondo lo “Stile” del nostro essere ‘missionari ad gentes’! Ma lietissimo di essere smentito! From “Foreign Missions” to the mission ad gentes: is this a post-Council journey that still has to be defined and made together?

1. “Foreign Missions” before the Council: preach-baptise to “save souls” …
2. The II Vatican Council challenged the idea of “Foreign Missions”: see Lumen Gentium, Ad Gentes, Gaudium et Spes.
3. In the Gospel, Jesus has already given us other examples and perspectives: see Luke 10: 1-12 etc.
4. The post-Council re-launches the universal mission of the Church: Fratelli tutti, Laudato sii…
5. John Paul II identified three different fields and modalities for the “universal mission” of the Church: a) ad gentes, among the non-Christians; b) missionary pastoral ministry, in/for the Christian communities; b) New Evangelisation, in post-Christian milieus.
6. Which are the specific traits of the Mission ad gentes today? An example: see Giuseppe Morotti, Rilanciamo la Speranza. Esperienze di incontro tra cristiani e mussulmani. EMI:

• Avoid beginning from doctrinal and theological discussions.
• Favour friendly relationships and mutual trust.
• Stay true to your identity without absolutizing it.
• Unite with others to promote humanity in everyday life.
• Do not compromise on the fundamental rights of every person.
• Carry out the toiling effort of integration without assimilation.
• Commit yourself to the global establishment of just economic, political (social and cultural) relationships…

7. Then… “when the Lord wills, if possible” (Francis of Assisi), share with the brothers the Good News of Hope for the world which dwells within you – Jesus Christ.

As a Xaverian Family, which direction are we heading to? Truly, I am quite old, a bit deaf and blind. Even so, I do not “see” nor “hear” a great buzz. And this is unfortunate!... There isn’t much buzz about achieving more decisively the Aim, nor about renewing the Style of our being Missionary ad gentes! However, I will be extremely delighted to be proven wrong.
