Il 12 settembre ricorre la memoria di san Guido (San Guido di Anderlecht - noto anche come San Guido del Brabante - un pellegrino e contadino belga vissuto intorno all'anno mille) e quella del Santissimo Nome di Maria. San Guido Maria Conforti pensò di scegliere la data del suo onomastico per la prima professione religiosa e missionaria dei suoi figli destinati alla missione. Tanti Saveriani, specialmente i più anziani, il 12 settembre ricordano l'anniversario dei loro primi voti religiosi e io sono uno di loro.

Ricordo con profonda emozione il 12 settembre 1951, 75 anni fa, eravamo in 5 ad emettere i nostri primi voti: uno lasciò in teologia; tre, i padri Antonio Novello, Vittorino Ghirardi e Giuseppe Carminati hanno raggiunto il cielo dopo un fruttuoso lavoro missionario, e il sottoscritto. Antonio Novello aveva compiuto sedici anni e io diciassette. Stavamo decidendo della nostra vita…

Il rito della professione fu molto semplice. Erano presenti il p. Maestro, Mario Ghezzi e gli altri padri del Noviziato, una trentina di novizi che avrebbero fatto la loro prima professione il mese seguente e, spiritualmente presenti, i nostri genitori, i nostri parenti e numerose persone che pregavano per la nostra perseveranza.

Padre Giovanni Gazza, Superiore Generale, presiedette l’ Eucaristia. Quando - dopo l'omelia - venne il mio turno per leggere la formula dei voti, tremavo per l'emozione, ma dentro il mio cuore, ero fermamente deciso a rispondere generosamente e per sempre al Signore Gesù, che mi chiamava al lavoro all’annuncio e alla testimonianza, anche se la prima professione era ancora “temporanea”. Fu, per me, uno dei momenti più belli della mia vita, un momento che non posso dimenticare e che trovo difficile descrivere. Nel pomeriggio facemmo la foto di gruppo davanti alla piccola grotta di Lourdes e con la Madonnina del noviziato.

I voti di povertà, castità e obbedienza hanno guidato tutta la mia vita. L'obbedienza mi ha aiutato negli spostamenti in missione. La vita comunitaria mi è stata di aiuto e lo è anche ora qui, dove mi trovo nella casa del riposo della famiglia Saveriana a Parma nella Casa Madre con ventisette confratelli ritornati dalla missione, con diverse patologie. Anche noi continuiamo ad essere missionari attraverso la preghiera, la sofferenza e la vita fraterna.

Siccome, grazie a Dio, sono in carrozzina, ma ancora abbastanza autosufficiente celebrerò questo Giubileo al mio paese, Sedegliano, Udine, dove tutto incominciò una domenica di gennaio del 1943 verso le tre del pomeriggio. Il 13 settembre al mio paese verrà portata in processione una statua della Madonna di Lourdes; è una bella occasione per unire le due celebrazioni che saranno precedute da una settimana di animazione missionaria. Ho desiderato ricevere la Benedizione Apostolica e il Papa la estende anzitutto ai miei confratelli. Mi raccomando alle vostre preghiere. Grazie! (Franco Lizzit sx)

September 12^th marks the feast day of St. Guido (Saint Guido of Anderlecht—also known as Saint Guido of Brabant – a Belgian pilgrim and farmer who lived around the year 1000) and that of the Most Holy Name of Mary. St. Guido Maria Conforti chose the date of his name day for the first religious and missionary profession of his sons destined for the mission. Many Xaverians, especially the older ones, commemorate the anniversary of their first religious vows on September 12^th, and I am one of them.

I remember with deep emotion September 12^th, 1951 – it was 75 years ago – when the five of us took our first vows: one later left the congregation while studying theology; three – Frs. Antonio Novello, Vittorino Ghirardi, and Giuseppe Carminati – have gone to heaven after a fruitful missionary life; and the last one was  myself. Antonio Novello was sixteen, and I was seventeen. We were making a decision about our life…

The ritual for the profession was very simple. In attendance were: the Master of Novices Fr. Mario Ghezzi; the other fathers of the Novitiate; about thirty novices who were to make their first profession the following month; and, in spirit, our parents, our relatives, and numerous people who were praying for our perseverance.

The Superior General, Fr. Giovanni Gazza, presided over the Eucharistic celebration. After his homily, when it was my turn to read the formula of profession, I was trembling with emotion, but deep in my heart, I was firmly resolved to respond generously and forever to the Lord Jesus, who was calling me to the work of proclamation and witness, even though my first profession was still “temporary.” That was one of the most beautiful moments of my life, a moment I will never forget and that I find hard to describe. That afternoon, we took a group photo in front of the small replica of the grotto in Lourdes and the statue of the Virgin Mary kept in the novitiate.

The vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience have guided my entire life. Obedience has helped me when moving from one mission to another. Community life has been a source of support for me, and it continues to be so here, where I am staying at the Xaverian family’s retirement home in Parma, at the Mother House, with 27 confreres who have returned from the missions and are dealing with various health conditions. We, too, continue to be missionaries through prayer, suffering, and fraternal life.

Although I am in a wheelchair, thanks to God I am still fairly independent, so I will celebrate this Jubilee in my hometown, Sedegliano, Udine, where it all began around 3:00 p.m. on a Sunday in January 1943. On September 13^th, a statue of Our Lady of Lourdes will be carried in a procession through my hometown; this is a wonderful opportunity to combine the two celebrations, which will be preceded by a week of mission awareness activities. I wanted to receive the Apostolic Blessing, and the Pope now extends his blessing first and foremost to my confreres. I entrust myself to your prayers. Thanks! (Franco Lizzit s.x.)
