MESSAGGIO DI PAPA LEONE XIV PER LA 100ª GIORNATA MISSIONARIA MONDIALE

La missione è comunione e cooperazione. Ecco il desiderio di Papa Leone XIV per la centesima Giornata Missionaria Mondiale (18 ottobre 2026). Con il titolo “Uno in Cristo, uniti nella missione”, il messaggio ricorda che Pio XI istituì questa giornata nel 1926 per richiamare i battezzati a collaborare con la missione ad gentes nella “testimonianza di vita in Cristo, la preghiera e il contributo per le missioni.” Oggi, le Pontificie Opere Missionarie svolgono questo servizio affinché, come diceva il Beato Paolo Manna, “tutta la chiesa [sia] per la conversione di tutto il mondo”. Perciò, insiste Leone XIV, dopo molti anni di servizio missionario in Perù, “il cammino missionario richiede cuori unificati in Cristo, comunità riconciliate e, in tutti, disponibilità a collaborare con generosità e fiducia.” Altresì, la comunione missionaria è radicata nella Trinità e ha un orizzonte ecumenico. Non è uniformità. È diversità percepita come ricchezza. Il Concilio Vaticano II, il recente Magistero di Papa Francesco, e la testimonianza di missionari e santi, come Francesco di Assisi, costituiscono delle risorse preziose. La missione, come dichiarò Santa Teresa di Gesù Bambino, consiste in “amare Gesù e farlo amare.” Per noi missionari, questo messaggio si presenta attualissimo, carico di speranza e capace di rinfrancare il nostro impegno per la “fraternità tra tutti gli esseri umani e [per] l’armonia con tutte le creature.” (Pascal Atumissi Bekububo sx)

POPE LEO XIV’S MESSAGE FOR 100TH WORLD MISSION DAY
Mission is communion and cooperation. This is Pope Leo XIV’s wish for the 100th Mission World Day (October 18th, 2026). In this message, titled “One in Christ, united in mission”, he recalls how, in 1926, Pius XI established this day to remind the baptised ones of their responsibility to collaborate on the ad gentes mission “through the witness of our lives in Christ, through prayer and through our contributions to the missions.” Nowadays, the Pontifical Mission Societies carry out such effort so that, as Blessed Paolo Manna used to say, “the entire Church [work] toward the conversion of the whole world.” Hence, based on years of missionary service in Perù, Leo XIV insists that “the missionary journey… requires hearts united in Christ, reconciled communities and, in everyone, a willingness to cooperate with generosity and trust.” Missionary communion is rooted in the Trinity and has an ecumenical horizon. It is not uniformity; it is an enriching diversity. The 2nd Vatican Council, the recent Magisterium of Pope Francis, and the witness of missionaries and saints, such as Francis of Assisi, constitute precious resources four the mission. Mission, as Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus affirmed, consists in “loving Jesus and making him loved.” For us missionaries, this message is much relevant today; it is full of hope and helps us renew our commitment to the service of “fraternity among all human beings and harmony with all creation.” (Pascal Atumissi Bekububo s.x.)
