Sabato 17 maggio 2025, insieme ai miei compagni Nicolas Chiza Hombo, François Shamavu Mateso e Dieudonné Twahirwa, ho partecipato ad un momento di preghiera e condivisione con la comunità di Sant’Egidio.

L’iniziativa di riunire tutti i giovani in formazione (professi temporanei, seminaristi e religiose) impegnati nel servizio dei poveri è partita dagli stessi responsabili della comunità di Sant’Egidio. Lo scopo era quello di vivere insieme un breve pellegrinaggio alla Basilica di San Bartolomeo, attuale Santuario dei Nuovi Martiri e dei Testimoni della Fede del XX secolo, nell’Isola Tiberina. All’incontro hanno partecipato circa 70 giovani, molti dei quali provenienti dal Collegio Urbano, Propaganda Fide.

L'incontro è iniziato con un saluto di benvenuto del rettore della Basilica. In seguito, ci siamo divisi in due gruppi per visitare il Museo dei Martiri. Il museo si trova sotto la Basilica (cripta). Con l’aiuto di un video abbiamo potuto scoprire la ricchezza  storica della Basilica e del Museo. In questo Museo si trovano le reliquie dei martiri dell'epoca contemporanea. Questo mi ha fatto ricordare come la comunità dei credenti prosperi davvero grazie al sangue dei martiri che sono stati fedeli fino alla fine a Gesù e al suo Vangelo.

Conclusa la visita al museo, abbiamo vissuto insieme un tempo di preghiera. La preghiera, per la comunità di Sant’Egidio, è “la vera forza che sostiene il servizio al povero”. Alla preghiera è seguito un tempo di condivisione delle esperienze vissute con i poveri in questi 8 mesi di servizio. Vari compagni hanno affermato che l'esperienza di servire i poveri ci ricorda che Gesù è presente nella loro sete e nella loro fame. Come Saveriani, ci ricordiamo che le nostre Costituzioni sottolineano proprio questo: “Fedeli alle preferenze di Cristo, ci rivolgiamo in particolare tra i non cristiani, ai destinatari privilegiati del Regno: i poveri, i deboli, gli emarginati dalla società, le vittime dell’oppressione e dell’ingiustizia” (C. 9).

Abbiamo concluso questo tempo di condivisione con una cena insieme sulla veranda della Basilica di San Bartolomeo, Santuario dei Martiri e dei Testimoni della Fede del XX secolo.  (Herybertus Jakpen Metta Ndeto, sx)

On Saturday 17 May 2025, together with my confreres Nicolas Chiza Hombo, François Shamavu Mateso and Dieudonné Twahirwa, I partecipated in a moment of prayer and sharing with the community of Sant'Egidio.

The initiative to bring together all the young people in formation (temporary professed, seminarians and religious sisters) involved in the service of the poor came from the leaders of the Sant'Egidio community themselves. The aim was to experience together a short pilgrimage to the Basilica of St Bartholomew, the current “Shrine of the new Martyrs and Witnesses of Faith of the 20^th century”, on the Tiber Island. The meeting was attended by about 70 young people, many of them from the Collegio Urbano, Propaganda Fide.

The meeting began with a welcome greeting from the Rector of the Basilica. Afterwards, we split into two groups to visit the Martyrs' museum. The museum is located beneath the Basilica (crypt). With the help of a video, we were able to discover the historical richness of the Basilica and the Museum itself. In this museum are the relics of new martyrs and witnesses of faith of the 20^th century. This reminded me how the community of believers really flourishes thanks to the blood of martyrs who were faithful to the end to Jesus and his Gospel.

After the Museum visit, we had a time of prayer together. Prayer for the Community of Sant'Egidio is the “real strength that sustains the service to the poor”. Prayer was followed by a time of sharing experiences with the poor during these 8 months of service. Several companions pointed out that the experience of serving the poor reminds us that Jesus is present in their thirst and hunger. As Xaverians, we remind ourselves that our Constitutions emphasise precisely this: ‘Faithful to Christ's own option, we direct our efforts among non-Christians, in particular way, to the privileged ones of the Kingdom: the poor, the weak, the marginalised, and the victims of oppression and injustice’ (C. 9).

We concluded this time of sharing with a dinner together on the veranda of St Bartholomew's Basilica, Shrine of the new Martyrs and Witnesses of Faith the 20^th century.  (Herybertus Jakpen Metta Ndeto, s.x.)
