SYNOD: A CONTRIBUTION FROM THE REGION OF JAPAN

The Xaverians in Japan are requested to take part in various forms of synodality within the dioceses where they live and work. They are doing it by helping lay Christians stand up and speak openly in front of other Christians, priests and bishops, and communicate their concrete experiences, priorities in terms of values, problems, difficulties, failures and conquests in their personal and Church life of faith within Japanese society.

For the Xaverians in Japan, taking part in the synod means to increase and qualify their capacity to interact with the Christians, the Church in Japan, and with the non-Christians and the society that surround us.

The same holds true for the Xaverian circumscription per se, its community meetings and daily relationships with confreres. It implies being open to the confreres, their experience, the more or less pleasing manners in which they express themselves, and the different ways of feeling and thinking about problems.

The circumscription questions itself on the manners in which synodality is put into practice in the parishes run by the Xaverians (parish pastoral council, financial administration, etc.). Even if the domain where various confreres operate is the diocese, a Xaverian is called to offer the important contribution of his experience of “synodality” in community life.

Synodality means also acting on one’s own weaknesses so as to facilitate a greater communion, community and brotherhood, and allow the mission ad gentes to bear fruits that ensure a future in which every confrere is in the position to offer his best, not as an isolated reality, but as part of one single body: the family of all Xaverians working in Japan.
