Riportiamo qui quanto la Missionaria di Maria – Saveriana, Rosetta Mancini (classe 1931), ha preparato e letto a nome della comunità delle Missionarie di Maria-Saveriane di Roma (Via Trionfale No. 7515) prima dell’inizio dell’Eucaristia (24.05.2025):  

“Oggi, 24 maggio, la Società Missionaria di Maria ha trovato la sua Fondatrice, che al Signore dice il suo ‘fiat’”. Sono queste le parole di p. Giacomo Spagnolo.   Le sue origini, però, vengono da più lontano. Scrive P. Spagnolo: “Non poteva mancare alla gloria di Mons. Conforti l’attuazione di un progetto che la morte gli fece lasciare incompiuto, ma che il merito della santità gli ottiene di attuare quotidianamente dal Cielo: la fondazione e lo sviluppo di una Congregazione Missionaria Femminile, ramo del suo Istituto Missionario”.

La persona scelta per dare origine alla nuova fondazione fu un suo Saveriano, immerso nello studio della matematica, ignaro di tutto e persino dell’idea del Fondatore e dall’altra parte la signorina Celestina Bottego che pensava tutt’altro e che alla prima proposta rispose con un rifiuto.

Nella Pasqua del 1944 p. Spagnolo mandò gli auguri alla signorina Bottego e al biglietto augurale aggiunse una cartolina raffigurante il crocifisso del Velázquez, dietro scrisse una sola parola ‘Tutto!’, che voleva esprimere la completezza della donazione di Gesù e la sua attesa di un dono totalitario da parte della creatura. Dal diario di P. Spagnolo leggiamo: “24 Maggio 1944. Siamo al quarto giorno degli Esercizi Spirituali che sto predicando ai nostri Diaconi, a Capriglio, la signorina Bottego viene pure essa ad assistere alle prediche trovandosi qua per qualche giorno. Questa sera, dopo la terza predica, uscito di chiesa, vidi la Signorina che, uscita anch’essa di chiesa, si avviava verso la grotta della Madonna di Lourdes con la corona in mano. Mi disse che desiderava chiedermi un consiglio circa una cosa, nonostante sentisse che si obbligava. Mi disse che, dopo la sua decisione presa a riguardo dell’Opera, non era rimasta tranquilla, perché le pareva che quella fosse basata sul suo attaccamento alla vita comoda, che l’immagine del Crocifisso che io le avevo mandato a Pasqua con dietro scritto ‘Tutto’, l’aveva ancora più scossa, quei giorni di ritiro le avevano fatto comprendere chiaramente che, per cercare unicamente il Signore e non se stessa, doveva dire il suo ‘Sì’”. Below is a text prepared by Sr. Rosetta Mancini (born 1931) on behalf of the community of the Xaverian Sisters-Missionaries of Mary in Rome (Via Trionfale 7515), which she read it before the Eucharistic celebration (24.05.2025):

“Today, May 24^th, the Missionary Society of Mary has found her Founding Mother, who spoke to the Lord and said her ‘fiat!’ ” These are the words of Fr. Giacomo Spagnolo. However, the origins of the Society come from much further back. Fr. Spagnolo then writes: “Msgr. Conforti’s glory could not fail to include the realisation of a project that although death forced him to leave incomplete, the merits of his holiness allows him to implement from Heaven every day, that is: the foundation and development of a Women's Missionary Congregation as a branch of his Missionary Institute.”

The person chosen to begin the new foundation was, on the one hand, one of his Xaverians – a missionary steeped in the study of mathematics, unaware of all and even of the Founder’s idea; on the other hand, Miss Celestina Bottego, who was thinking about entirely different things and who answered the first proposal with a refusal.

In 1944, on Easter Day, Fr. Spagnolo sent his wishes to Miss. Bottego and on the back of his greeting card depicting Velázquez’s Crucifixion of Christ wrote only one word “Tutto!” (“everything!”). He meant to speak of a radical donation to Jesus who awaits for the total self-offering of the creature. She understood…

In Fr. Spagnolo’s diary we read:

 “May 24^th, 1944. We are on the fourth day of the spiritual exercises I am preaching in Capriglio to our deacons. Also Miss Bottego, who is here for some days, comes to listen to the meditations. This afternoon, after the third homily, upon exiting the church, I saw the young lady who, having also gone out of the church, was heading towards the grotto of Lourdes, holding a rosary in her hand. She told me she wanted to ask for my advice on a matter, even if by asking she felt she was already accepting an obligation. She told me that after taking the decision about the project (opera), she did not feel at peace with herself, because she reckoned that that decision was based on attachment to comfortable life; and told me that the image of the crucifix I had sent her on Easter, and behind which I had written “everything!”, had struck her even more; and that in particular these days of retreat had made her understand clearly that, in order to look only for the Lord rather than for herself, she had to say her “Yes!” ” (Rosetta Mancini mmx)
