“È l’ora del cuore largo e dell’occhio pulito”: così don Primo Mazzolari, parroco di Bozzolo, commenta il 1° novembre 1958, il Conclave (25-28 ottobre 1958) che porterà alla elezione di Angelo Roncalli col nome di Giovanni XXIII. Don Mazzolari invita ad accogliere il nuovo papa con fede, nella certezza che “non l’uomo ma il Signore porta la sua Chiesa”. La storia e la vita della comunità cristiana sono nelle mani di Dio. È il tempo della preghiera di chi accoglie un dono; è il tempo per far spazio alla “fiducia che non coltiva preferenze né dà suggerimento o consigli”. Con il cuore largo e l’occhio pulito è possibile comprendere chi sarà il nuovo Papa: “Un Pontefice umile e povero e di nient’altro preoccupato che di proteggere gli inermi, dissipare dalle menti la tenebra e il terrore dai cuor...”.

“It is time for wide heart and clean eyes”: this is how, on November 1st, 1958, Fr. Primo Mazzolari, parish priest in Bozzolo (Mantua, Italy), commented on the Conclave (October 25th-28th, 1958) that elected Angelo Roncalli pope under the name of John XXIII. Don Mazzolari invites us to welcome the new Pope with faith, in the certainty that “not man but the Lord leads his Church.” The history and life of the Christian community are in the hands of God. It is now the time of prayer, the prayer of those who receive a gift. It is now the time to make room for “trust that does not cultivate preferences or make suggestions or give advice.” With a wide heart and clean eye, it is possible to understand who the new Pope is going to be: “A Pontiff humble and poor and concerned of nothing but to protect the helpless, dispel the darkness from minds and terror from hearts. …”
