(P. Faustino Turco sx)

THE SECOND FRIDAY OF OCTOBER: “The Martyr, a Fruitful Seed”

The traditional annual day commemorating the Xaverian martyrs is a time of family spiritual memory, during which we honour the four blessed martyrs of Uvira together with the other witnesses to the faith within our Charismatic family, who shed their blood for the proclamation of the Gospel.

This year marks a particularly significant anniversary: exactly one hundred years ago, in December 1926, Saint Guido Maria Conforti raised his heartfelt voice against the religious persecutions raging in Mexico. The Founder extolled the heroic steadfastness of those who chose to ‘obey God rather than men’, recalling that the blood of the martyrs is always ‘fruitful seed’ and that, in the face of the violence and oppression of tyrants, ‘Christ conquers, reigns and triumphs’ (cf. FCT 28, pp. 131–135).

The recent teaching of Pope Leo XIV fits within this same perspective. In his address to the Catholic community in Algeria (13 April 2026), the Pontiff recalled the martyrs as guardians of a ‘living seed that never ceases to bear fruit’. Their sacrifice, lived out in charity to the point of the supreme gift and without fanfare, invites us to imitate their faith and to become active builders of peace, dialogue and fraternity.

Lastly, during the audience with participants at the conference organised by the Congregation for the Causes of Saints (16 September 2026), the Holy Father emphasised that witnesses to the faith “do not propose an ideology, but demonstrate a faith lived out in everyday life”. Their credibility stems from a profound consistency between words and deeds, capable of defusing violence through the meekness of the Gospel.

As we remember our martyrs, we therefore wish to embrace a living legacy so that, in our daily choices—both small and great—we may renew our courage in remaining faithful to Christ and our selfless love for all. (P. Faustino Turco sx)
