“La Chiesa nella nostra terra, il Messico, ci chiede di pensare alle sorelle e ai fratelli scomparsi (desaparecidos). Ci riuniamo in una giornata di preghiera assieme a tutte le parrocchie chiedendo pace e giustizia”.  È la voce calma e ferma di padre Rafael López, parroco di Nostra Signora di Fatima che invita a rivolgersi a Dio.

“A Torreón, Messico del nord - aggiunge p. Rafael - la pace e la giustizia sono agognate più che mai. Terra desertica e calda, a volte riserba sorprese amare”. I corpi di persone scomparse sono stati trovati, anche a pezzi, sepolti in fosse polverose. “Ho chiesto alla comunità di pregare, anche per la conversione dei carnefici”: la voce del prete messicano rimane tranquilla, anche se le denunce sono terribili. Non fa mancare la sua presenza alle famiglie dei volontari e ai gruppi che si mettono in cerca dei loro cari, spesso ignorati dalle autorità. “È una ricerca di verità che parte dalla preghiera, per ritrovare almeno i resti dei familiari scomparsi”.

Il dramma dei desaparecidos è una ferita dolorosa per il Messico. Nel Paese spariscono in media diciotto donne al giorno, secondo la Commissione nazionale di ricerca. In alcuni periodi padre Rafael, dopo la messa, organizza la marcia con i parenti delle vittime assieme ai volontari che sostengono le famiglie in questo compito duro. “The Church in our land, Mexico, asks us to think of our missing sisters and brothers (desaparicidos). We gather in a day of prayer, joining all other parishes, to invoke peace and justice.” This is the calm but resolute voice of Fr. Rafael López, pastor of Our Lady of Fatima Parish, that invites everyone to appeal to God.

“In Torreón, northern Mexico – continues Fr. Rafael – people yearn for peace and justice more than ever”. It is a desert and hot land that, occasionally, gives bitter surprises. Bodies of missing people have been found, some even cut into pieces, buried in dusty graves. “I have asked the community to pray, also for the conversion of the slayers”. The Mexican priest’s voice remains calm, even if his are terrible denunciations. He ensures his presence to the families of volunteers and groups searching for their beloved ones, people whose grief is often ignored by the authorities. It is a search for truth that, moving from prayer, endeavours to find at least the remains of missing relatives.

The drama of the desaparecidos is one of Mexico’s painful wounds. According to the National Research Commission, in this country, an average of eighteen women disappear every day. In some periods, after Mass, Fr. Rafael organises a march with the relatives of the victims and the volunteers that supports those families in this tough work.
