P. Flavio Cossu

Il 25 maggio 2004, alle ore 21.10, all’Ospedale Mater Dei di Londrina è morto il P. Flavio Cossu. Due giorni prima il confratello, che lottava da circa due anni contro un brutto tumore allo stomaco, era stato ospedalizzato ormai in stato terminale. Si è spento serenamente dando testimonianza di fiducia e di abbandono nel Signore.
Aveva quasi 63 anni, essendo nato a Tramatza (CA) l’8 luglio 1940.
P. Flavio entrò tra i Saveriani a Macomer, come probando, il 6 novembre 1955. Tre anni dopo fu ammesso al Noviziato per diventare Saveriano Fratello. La sua domanda era accompagnata da questo parere favorevole del P. G. Morandi (10.9.1958): «Pio, docile, fidato, di criterio, sereno, gioviale, zelante per il culto liturgico. Con buona volontà e onestà è stato il nostro cuoco e si è occupato delle spese giornaliere per la cucina e delle commissioni, con serietà».
Emise la Prima Professione il 15.11.1959. Fu quindi destinato alla casa di Piacenza e, dopo qualche mese, alla comunità di Viale Vaticano 90 dove, tranne un periodo di cura a Massa Lucana, prestò il suo servizio di cuoco dal febbraio 1960 all’ottobre 1964. Ci ha lasciato una testimonianza su quel periodo di vita di P. Flavio, il P. Bonardi che così lo presentava per il rinnovo della Professione: «Fa bene le sue pratiche di pietà. Lavora volentieri. Fa con amore il suo lavoro di cuoco. Trattato bene dagli studenti» (23.7.64).
Nel novembre del 1964 fu destinato al Brasile che raggiunse nel gennaio successivo. Studiò per qualche mese il Portoghese e quindi ebbe l’incarico di Prefetto nel seminario Minore di Jaguapità (65-67). Fu quindi mandato a Vila Casoni come aiutante del parroco (67-68). In questo periodo concluse il suo iter formativo con la Professione Perpetua, emessa a Londrina il 15 novembre 1968. Successivamente lavorò a Centenario do Sul (68-71) e a Santa Mariana (71- 76) come animatore di gruppi giovanili, animatore vocazionale, orientatore nel seminario parrocchiale, Vicerettore. Così descriveva il lavoro di P. Flavio il suo superiore a S. Mariana: « una spiccata tendenza all’azione pastorale lo spingeva a lavorare specialmente tra i giovani… ha organizzato gli Scouts, fondato clubs giovanili e, in particolare… ha tenuto numerosi corsi di coscientizzazione… Dotato di una natura forte, sapeva imporsi, specialmente con gli adolescenti, che lo seguivano in tutte le sue iniziative» (8.2.79).
Dal 1976 all’1980 visse nella comunità del Seminario di Londrina come studente di filosofia e teologia. Nel 1979 presentò domanda di ammissione ai ministeri ordinati e il 2 luglio 1980 fu ordinato Presbitero a Rio de Janeiro da Giovanni Paolo II: coronava così quello che era stato il suo sogno fin da quando nel 1954 era stato accolto, ancora ragazzo, nel Seminario di Oristano come cameriere.
Dopo l’ordinazione presbiterale fu impegnato nel compito di animatore e formatore nel Seminario Minore di Laranjeiras do Sul (81-86) e poi, per undici anni, nel ministero parrocchiale a Centenario do Sul (87-92) e Cantagallo (92-97). Nel 1997 tornò a Laranjeiras do Sul incaricato della pastorale vocazionale e dal 1998 era Rettore del Seminario Saveriano di Londrina.
L’immagine ricordo del P. Flavio può essere quella delineata da M. L. Augustinho da Rocha durante la recita del Rosario in suo suffragio, nel Santuario del Beato Conforti: «Aveva grande amore per la gente: era sempre disponibile ad ascoltare le persone; le visitava volentieri nelle loro case… era amico di tutti. Era un uomo di preghiera. Chi andava in chiesa lo vedeva passeggiare su e giù con la corona in mano. A lui piaceva molto anche l’ufficio… Amava i giovani… credeva nelle loro energie e nel loro entusiasmo. Amava le vocazioni: incoraggiava le persone a seguire ognuna la propria».

Fr. Flavio Cossu died in the evening of May 25 2004, at the “Mater Dei” Hospital, Londrina, Brazil. He was admitted to the hospital two days before his death, in the terminal stage of stomach cancer, against which he had been fighting for the last two years. His peaceful death was an example of trust and abandonment in the Lord.
Born on July 8 1940, in Tramatza (Cagliari), he was 62 years old.
Fr. Flavio joined the Xaverians on Nov. 6 1955. He was admitted to the Novitiate three years later with a view to becoming a Xaverian Brother. His application was accompanied by a positive assessment of Fr. G. Morandi (Sept. 10, 1958): “He is pious, docile and trustworthy; he possesses sound criterion, is serene, jovial, - and zealous in liturgical worship. He showed willingness and honesty in working for us as a cook and taking care of the daily shopping.” After his First Profession on Nov. 15 1959, he was assigned to Piacenza and, a few months later, to the community of Viale Vaticano 90 where, with the exception of a period in Massa Lucana for medical treatment, he worked as cook from February 1960 until October 1964. In presenting him for the renewal of the Profession, Fr. Bonardi has left us a description of Fr. Flavio in that period of his life: “He is diligent in the practice of piety. He is a willing worker. He carries out his duties as cook with love. The students treat him well” (July 23 1964).
In November 1964, he was assigned to Brazil and arrived there in January 1965. He studied Portuguese for a few months before being sent to the Minor Seminary of Jaguapitá as prefect (1965-67). He was then assigned to Vila Casoni as assistant to the parish priest (1967-68). He concluded his formation experience in this period with his Final Profession, which he made in Londrina on Nov. 15 1968. Thereafter, he worked in Centenario do Sul (1968-71) and Santa Mariana (1971-76) as animator of youth groups, vocation animator, animator in the parish seminary and Vice-rector. His superior at Santa Mariana thus described Fr. Flavio’s work: “A keen interest in pastoral work led him to work especially with young people… he organized the Scouts, founded youth clubs and, gave many courses on awareness. Endowed with a strong temperament, he knew how to impose himself, especially with the adolescents, who followed him in all his initiatives” (Feb. 8, 1979).
In the period 1976-80, he lived in the community of the seminary of Londrina as a student of philosophy and theology. In 1979, he presented an application for admission to the ordained ministries and, on July 2 1980, he was ordained priest in Rio de Janeiro by Pope John Paul II: he thus crowned what had been his dream since 1954 when he had been received, still a young boy, into the Seminary of Oristano as a waiter.
After ordination, he worked as animator and formator in the Minor Seminary of Larajeiras do Sul (1981-86) and then, for eleven years, in parish ministry at Centenario do Sul (1987-92) and Cantagallo (1992-97). He then returned to Laranjeiras do Sul in 1997, where he was put in charge of vocation animation; from 1998, he served as rector of the Xaverian Seminary of Londrina.
During the recitation of the Rosary in the Conforti Shrine, Parma, M. L. Augustinho da Rocha thus described Fr. Flavio: “He had a great love for the people: he was always available to listen to them and he willingly visited them in their homes… he was everyone’s friend. He was a man of prayer. Anyone who went into church saw him walking back and forth with the rosary in his hands, and reciting the Breviary… He loved young people, he believed in their vitality and enthusiasm. He loved vocations: he encouraged each person to follow his own call.”
