P. Angelo Geremia

Alle 16.45 del 3.3.2007, a Parma in Casa Madre, è morto, consumato da tumore, il P. Angelo Geremia. Aveva 67 anni compiuti, essendo nato a San Martino di Lupari (Padova) il 2.12.1939.
Entrato tra i Saveriani a Vicenza il 26.9.1950, percorse regolarmente l’iter formativo saveriano allora vigente: medie a Vicenza (50-53); ginnasio superiore a Zelarino (53-55); Noviziato e Prima Professione (12.9.56) a S. Pietro in Vincoli; Liceo a Desio (56-59); Prefettato a Zelarino (59-61); Teologia a Parma (61-65). Fu ordinato presbitero il 25.10.1964.
In tutte queste tappe della formazione raccolse sempre giudizi positivi: “Ottimo il giudizio del Rettore all’uscita del ginnasio; molto favorevole il giudizio del Maestro per la professione temporanea... I due Rettori che l’hanno avuto come prefetto a Zelarino sono concordi nel lodarne l’impegno, la laboriosità, la generosità” (Presentazione alla Professione Perpetua, 1962). “Intelligente, capace, allegro, generoso, coscienzioso, diligente. Studia con impegno e riesce bene nella scuola. Sa ‘sgobbare’ anche nei lavori materiali” (Presentazione agli Ordini Maggiori, 1964).
Dopo l’ordinazione fu destinato alla casa di Vicenza (65-67): impegnato nell’insegnamento, nel ministero, nelle giornate missionarie, e contemporaneamente aiuto economo, studente di Lettere antiche all’università di Padova. Questi impegni continuarono nella comunità di Zelarino alla quale fu destinato nel 1967. Dal 1974 al 1980, poi, fu Rettore e formatore, distinguendosi per umanità ed empatia verso le persone.
Nell’80 fu destinato all’Indonesia e in attesa del visa concluse gli studi accademici laureandosi nel 1983. Il conseguimento della laurea fu per P. Angelo un punto d’onore.
L’andata in Indonesia risultò particolarmente laboriosa. Poiché il visa non arrivava, nel 1983 P. Angelo fu destinato al Brasile Sud e in novembre raggiunse la nuova destinazione. Ma a dicembre, quando stava studiando il portoghese, arrivò il visa per l’Indonesia: P. Angelo ritornò in Italia per andare in quella missione:
“Da novembre a dicembre ho vissuto un’avventura bella e traumatica nello stesso tempo. Sono partito per il Brasile e dopo un mese sono stato richiamato… il primo visa del governo indonesiano dal ‘79 all’83 non si poteva lasciarlo cadere” (18.2.84).
Raggiunse l’Indonesia nel febbraio 84 e dopo qualche mese di studio della lingua fu aiutante, fino all’agosto dell’85, a Tanjung Balai e a Aek Nabara. Quindi lavorò come aiutante a Perdagangan (85-87) e dall’87 al 91 come parroco a Kisaran. Nel 91 fu eletto Regionale, incarico che ricoprì per due mandati. Infine nel 97 fu nominato rettore dello studentato filosofico di Jakarta, servizio che prestò fino al 26 gennaio 2007 quando rientrò in Italia per essere ricoverato a Parma.
Sui 23 anni ‘indonesiani’ due testimonianze, lette nella messa esequiale (6.3.07): “P. Angelo mi fa venire in mente quanto il Beato Conforti richiede a noi Saveriani: spirito di viva fede, ubbidienza generosa e costante, carità a tutta prova per la nostra famiglia e per i membri che la compongono. Sono valori che egli ha incarnato in se stesso e ha vissuto in semplicità" (P. Baravalle); “Quasi tutti i confratelli lo conoscevano come una persona buona, molto gentile e capace di ascoltare e di collaborare con tutti, anche con i confratelli che hanno caratteri speciali e che fanno difficoltà a trovare un compagno” (P. Rubianto).
Non c’è dubbio, il P. Angelo ha vissuto la scelta espressa nella domanda di ammissione al Noviziato (21.7.55): “Mi sono consigliato frequentemente coi superiori, chiedendo loro con tutta serietà se mostravo i veri segni di vocazione e se potevo andare avanti. Mi hanno sempre rassicurato e incoraggiato. Perciò io, volendo rispondere alla chiamata di Gesù, ben volentieri e con entusiasmo gli metto a disposizione tutta quanta la mia vita, ben contento di spenderla per la salvezza degli infedeli”.

Fr. Angelo Geremia died of cancer on March 3 2007, in the Mother House, Parma. Born in San Martino di Lupari (Padua) on Dec. 2 1939, he was 67 years old.
He joined the Xaverians in Vicenza on Sept. 26 1950 and completed the Xaverian formation curriculum of the time: secondary school at Vicenza (1950-53); high school at Zelarino (1953-55); Novitiate and First Profession (Sept 12 1956) at S. Pietro in Vincoli; Liceo at Desio (1956-59); prefect at Zelarino (1959-61) and Theology at Parma (1961-65). He was ordained priest on Oct. 25 1964.
He received good reports at all the stages of his formation: “His rector gave an excellent report when he finished high school; the Novice Master gave a very positive report for his temporary profession…The two Rectors who knew him when he was prefect at Zelarino both praised his commitment, industriousness and generosity” (Presentation to Final Profession, 1962). “He is intelligent, capable, cheerful, generous, conscientious and diligent. He applies himself to study and performs well in school. He is also capable of hard manual work” (Presentation to Major Orders, 1964).
After his ordination, he was assigned to the house of Vicenza (1965-67) where he worked in teaching, the ministry and mission appeals; he was also assistant treasurer and student of classical studies at the University of Padua. These commitments continued when he was sent the community of Zelarino in 1967. From 1974 until 1980 he was Rector and formator, distinguishing himself for his humanity and empathy towards people.
He was assigned to Indonesia in 1980. While he awaited the visa he completed his academic studies with a degree in 1983. This academic was a source of pride for Fr. Angelo. The process of going to Indonesia turned out to be very laborious. When it seemed the visa would not be granted, Fr. Angelo was assigned to South Brazil in 1983 and he arrived in his new destination in November of that same year. However, the visa for Indonesia arrived in December, while he was studying Portuguese. Fr. Angelo returned to Italy to leave for that Indonesia: “My experience between November and December was both beautiful and traumatic. I had left for Brazil and was called back within one month…we couldn’t afford to lose the first entry visa granted by the Indonesian government since 1979” (Feb. 18 1984).
He arrived in Indonesia in February 1984 and, after some months studying the language, he worked as assistant at Tanjung Balai and Aek Nabara until August 1985.He was then assistant at Perdagangan (1985-87) and, from 1987 until 1991, parish priest at Kisaran. He was elected Regional Superior in 1991, a service he carried out for two mandates. Finally, in 1997, he was appointed Rector of the Philosophy students in Jakarta, a role he carried out until Jan. 26 2007, when he returned to Italy to be admitted to hospital.
The testimony of two confreres on his 23 ‘Indonesian’ years was read during the funeral Mass (March 6 2007): “Fr. Angelo reminds me of what the Blessed Founder asked of us Xaverians: a spirit of living faith, generous and constant obedience, steadfast love for our family and its members. Fr. Angelo embodied these values and lived them out in simplicity” (Fr. Baravalle); “Almost all the confreres knew him as a good and very kind person, capable of listening and collaborating with everyone, even with confreres who have a particular temperament and find it difficult to get on with others” (Fr. Rubianto).
There is no doubt that Fr. Angelo lived what he expressed in his application for admission to Novitiate (21.7.55): “I sought my superiors’ counsel frequently, asking them in all sincerity if I showed true signs of a vocation and if I could proceed. They always reassured and encouraged me. Therefore, wishing to respond to the call of Jesus, I willingly and enthusiastically offer him my entire life for the salvation of all”.
