All’ospedale cardiologico di Ancona, dopo ventisette lunghi giorni di sala di rianimazione, alle 18.45 del 17.1.1997, è morto per crisi cardio-respiratoria il P. Antonio Ibba. Il Padre era prossimo ai settantatré anni, essendo nato a Sardara (Ca) il 10.2.1924.
Allievo del Pontificio Seminario di Cuglieri (Or) fino alla prima Liceo, entrò nel Noviziato saveriano di S. Pietro in Vincoli il 30.10.1941 e il 3 dicembre dell’anno successivo emise la Prima Professione. Frequentò quindi il liceo negli anni più duri della seconda guerra mondiale, che costrinse i nostri a spostarsi da Parma a S. Pietro in Vincoli e infine a Castel Sidoli (Pc). Nel 1945 iniziò il corso di studi teologici e nell’ultimo anno di teologia, del tutto inattesa, fece la sua comparsa “sorella infirmitade” che, in varie forme, fu l’assidua compagna di tantissime giornate del P. Antonio.
Dopo l’ordinazione presbiterale (24.9.49) fu destinato all’insegnamento in diverse case apostoliche: Tortolì, Macomer (50-52), Nizza Monferrato (52-53), Massa della Lucania (53.54), Nizza M. (54-56), Macomer (56-59). Era, quello, un periodo di espansione dell’attività formativa da parte dell’Istituto e P. Antonio collaborò, e non poco, per dare inizio alla presenza Saveriana a Macomer come pure a Cagliari (1964): “ho poco tempo: la scuola, i compiti da correggere, la mia salute che non mi permette troppo facilmente di accorciare il tempo del riposo e soprattutto un’infinità di piccoli impegni sempre nuovi, che mi appaiono suggeriti dalla carità fraterna, dallo spirito di famiglia...” (Lettera del 20.2.51).
Nel 1960 i Superiori, aderendo alle sue iterate richieste, lo destinarono allo Zaire dove operò soprattutto nella scuola come insegnante nel Seminario di Mugombe e nel collegio di Kamituga e successivamente come Direttore a Kamituga stessa (62-64), quindi della Scuola Normale di Bukavu (65-67) e infine come Prefetto degli studi a Mugombe (67-70).
Nel 1970 il P. Antonio ritornò in Italia seriamente provato da “sorella infirmitade”. Dopo un anno, riprese alquanto le sue forze, fu destinato alla comunità della Casa Generalizia di via Nullo e collaborò al SEDOS (Servizio Documentazione e Studi). Passato quindi alla comunità di Via Pineta Sacchetti, dal 73 al 75 frequentò la Facoltà di Scienze dell’Educazione presso la Pontificia Università Salesiana, conseguendo la licenza con una tesi sull’Animazione vocazionale dei preadolescenti nei seminari minori Saveriani d’Italia.
Dopo due anni ad Alzano come insegnante e animatore, fu destinato nel 1978 alla comunità di Ancona dove, fino al 19 dicembre u. s. insegnò lingue ai novizi, si dedicò al ministero e prestò la sua competente collaborazione quando si costruì la nuova sede del Noviziato.
Al P. Antonio, che volle la sua vita illuminata da queste parole della Scrittura: “Da questo noi abbiamo conosciuto l’amore del Signore: che Egli ha dato la sua vita per noi. Allora, anche noi dobbiamo dare la vita per i nostri fratelli”, il Signore conceda la gioia del suo Regno.

Fr. Antonio Ibba died at the Hospital of Ancona of heart and lung failure, after 27 days of Intensive Care, at 6:45 pm of January 17 1997.
He was 72 years old, born at Sardara (Cagliari) on Feb. 10 1924.
Fr. Antonio came to the Xaverians from the diocesan seminary of Cuglieri (Oristano) and entered the Novitiate at S. Pietro in Vincoli on Oct. 30 1941. After his first profession on Dec. 3 1942, he joined the theology community of Parma, and because of War World II, he moved to S. Pietro in Vincoli, Castel Sidoli (Piacenza). In 1945 he actually began his theology studies, but during the last year of theology, he felt ill, an illness which was to be a companion the rest of his life.
After the priesthood ordination on Sept. 24 1949, he was assigned to many houses in Italy as teacher and formator: Tortolì, Macomer (1950-52), Nizza Monferrato (1952-53), Massa della Lucania (1953-54), Nizza Monferrato (1954-56), Macomer (1956-59). He gave a great contribution for the establishment of the Xaverian presence in Sardinia, at Macomer and Cagliari. He wrote: "I have very little time for myself. I have to deal with the school, the homework, my health which does not facilitate to shorten my rest periods, and a great variety of small commitments, which I take out of fraternal charity and of family spirit..." (Letter of Feb. 20 1951).
In 1960 the Superiors assigned him to Zaire, where he worked in the teaching capacity in the Seminary of Mugombe, the college of Kamituga, (1962-64). When he returned to Congo on Sept. 25 1965, he served for two years as Director of the Ecole Normale Superieure Mons. Conforti of Bukavu (1965-66). He then took care of the seminary students of Mungombe, who had fled to Bukavu (1967-70).
Fr. Trevisan remembers: “We moved to Bukavu from the seminary of Mungombe, seeking refuge in an abandoned building… Fr. Antonio sustained us even in the midst of the poor conditions of the place, the scarcity of school supplies and desks, and the dangers of the rebellion. He would console me often with these words: ‘We have these youths, the hope of the Diocese for better education in the future, and who knows, some of them future priests. We cannot disappoint the Lord who put them in our hands. We ought to sacrifice ourselves for their success…’ He guided students to a deep Christian formation, and would celebrate the Sunday Eucharist with them. He would share with them strong and Gospel ideas which sustained them and distinguished them from the other students of the city.”
He returned to Italy for health reasons, and worked in Rome at the General House, collaborating with SEDOS, and also frequenting the Faculty of Education Sciences at the Pontifical Salesian University (1973-75). After a two-year teaching position in Alzano, he was assigned to Ancona in 1978, teaching languages to the Novices, being available for ministry, and overseeing for eight years the new construction of the Novitiate House, following the land-slide of Dec. 12 1982.
Fr. V. Munari reflects on his life: “In love with his priesthood and his religious consecration, he would speak willingly about these things, and would take every opportunity to be pastorally involved.”

Amoureux de sa vocation missionnaire, il se donna, pendant les dix premières années de son sacerdoce, à la formation des aspirants xavériens, et il en dépensa autant au Zaïre, en se dépensant soigneusement à l’éducation chrétienne et humaine des jeunes. Il leur enseigna avec insistance les chemins de la foi et de la science.
Il continua ce ministère, pendant 20 ans, à Ancône. Là, il collabora avec intelligence et discrétion à la préparation à la vie religieuse des novices xavériens. Il révéla sa finesse de comportement, la sage prudence de son accompagnement spirituel, l’acceptation de sa santé précaire dans l’abandon à la volonté du Seigneur.
Au pavillon de cardiologie de l’hôpital d’Ancône, après 27 longs jours de soins intensifs dans un état d’inconscience, à 18h45 du 17 janvier 1997, le père Antonio rendit l’âme suite à une crise cardiaque et respiratoire. Il était proche de ses 73 ans puisqu’il naquit à Sardara (Cagliari) le 10 février 1924.
Elève du séminaire pontifical de Cuglieri (Oristano) jusqu’en troisième année secondaire, il entra au Noviciat Xavérien de San Pietro in Vincoli (Ravenne) le 30 octobre 1941 et le 3 décembre de l’année suivante il fit sa première profession religieuse. Il acheva ses études secondaires dans les années les plus difficiles de la seconde guerre mondiale qui obligea les séminaristes à se déplacer à Castel Sidoli (Piacenza). En 1945, il commença les études de théologie. A leur terme, il y eut la rencontre de «sœur infirmité» qui, sous différentes formes, fut l’«amie fidèle» de nombreuses journées de son existence.
Après l’ordination presbytérale (24.09.1949), il fut affecté à l’enseignement dans différentes communautés de formation en Italie (1950 – 1959) : Tortoli, Macomer, Nizza Monferrato et Massa della Lucania. C’était l’époque de l’expansion de l’activité de formation dans les petits séminaires xavériens et le père Antoine contribua significativement à commencer cette présence xavérienne à Macomer et à Cagliari. Il décrit ainsi son emploi du temps :
Je dispose de très peu de temps pour moi : l’école, les devoirs des élèves à corriger, ma santé qui me demande un repos abondant, et surtout une infinité de petits engagements toujours nouveaux qui me sont suggérés par la charité fraternelle et l’esprit de famille…(Lettre du 20 février 1951).
En 1960, les supérieurs, sur sa demande explicite et réitérée, l’affectèrent au Congo où il travailla surtout dans les écoles comme enseignant au Petit Séminaire Diocésain de Mungombe (Uvira), comme préfet de Kamituga (Uvira) puis à l’Ecole Normale de Bukavu et, de nouveau, à Mungombe.
En 1970, il rentra à Rome pour poursuivre les études de Pédagogie à l’Université Pontificale Salésienne. Par la suite, il fut envoyé à Alzano (Bergame) comme enseignant et formateur et, en 1978, il regagna la Communauté du noviciat d’Ancône où il vécut jusqu’à sa mort. Dans cette communauté il enseignait l’anglais aux novices, il se rendait disponible au suivi des travaux de la nouvelle maison du noviciat et il se donna au ministère dans les paroisses du diocèse.
Il voulut que sa vie soit constamment éclairée par les paroles suivantes des Ecritures :
A ceci nous reconnaissons avoir connu l’amour du Seigneur : Il a donné Sa vie pour nous. Alors, nous aussi nous devons la donner pour nos frères.(cf. 1Jn 4).
Que le Seigneur accorde au père Antonio la joie de son Règne.
