Il 14 febbraio 2012, alle 16,15, a Parma in Casa Madre si è spento, all'età di 89 anni e dopo lunga malattia, il P. Luigi Martini.
Il Padre nacque a Carbonara di Rovolon (Padova) il 30.1.1923, ma visse a Vicenza dove la famiglia si era trasferita nel 1924. A Vicenza conobbe i Saveriani. Qui nacque la sua vocazione missionaria «fin dalla fanciullezza, almeno in confuso» (Foglio di informazioni, 20.8.46).
Fu allievo del Seminario diocesano dalla quarta ginnasio alla II teologia. Nel marzo del '45, su consiglio del suo vescovo Mons. Zinato, lasciò il seminario e si iscrisse all'università di Padova: con l'accordo che una volta conseguita la laurea si sarebbe deciso sulla sua vocazione.
Ma l'anno dopo, il 1° settembre 1946, P. Martini entrò in Noviziato a S. Pietro in Vincoli. Nelle delucidazioni inviate per la circostanza, il Vescovo informò il P. Maestro che il chierico Martini «nel periodo trascorso fuori del Seminario più volte ripeté la domanda di riprendere gli studi ecclesiastici. Si manteneva buono e in relazione con il Seminario» (14.11.46). Il Rettore del Seminario, Mons. Arena, una splendida figura del clero vicentino del tempo, allegò una dichiarazione categorica: «Il Martini ha sempre tenuto condotta esemplare … fu sempre regolare e lo spirito buono …. coltivò sempre lo spirito ecclesiastico» (3.12.46).
Con il Noviziato iniziò, per P. Martini, il tratto finale de suo iter formativo. Fece la prima professione il 12.9.1947; frequentò quindi la quarta teologia nel Seminario di Parma (47-48). Per un anno fu assistente degli studenti ad Ancona (48-49) e, il 25 marzo 1950, fu ordinato presbitero a Piacenza.
Ora era pronto: poteva andare a «istruire e educare gli ignoranti la religione vera» (Foglio di informazioni, 20.8.46). I Superiori gli chiesero di prestare il suo servizio in Italia. Anche perché non mancava qualche problema di salute. Fu economo a Cremona e poi insegnante a Cremona e a Vicenza. A P. Martini piaceva insegnare ma, a Vicenza per esempio, gli riuscivano quanto mai pesanti le diciassette ore settimanali di italiano, i numerosi impegni di ministero e qualche frequenza all'università. Per questo dopo due anni, nel 1953, fu trasferito a Parma e gli fu affidato l'incarico di Propagandista delle stampe. Attività svolta con buoni risultati, ma per un anno soltanto.
Nel 1954 fu destinato al Brasile Sud.
P. Martini rimase in Brasile Sud dal 1954 al 1966 e lavorò nelle parrocchie di Londrina–Vila Nova, Lupianopolis, Curitiba, Cafeara, dove costruì una moderna chiesa parrocchiale. Dal 1960 al 1963 fu insegnante nel seminario di Jaguapità: «qui mi trovo bene - scriveva il 4.5.60 - e non mi manca un sacco di lavoro con questi bravi apostolini, che tratto come fratelli e che mi sforzo di far lavorare, per istruirli nelle cose di Dio e degli uomini».
Nel 1966 ritornò in Italia. Fu un rientro sofferto: «Mi aiuti almeno con la preghiera - scriveva al P. Generale il 17.1.66 - e mi creda sempre rivolto al meglio, al quale tendo nonostante tutto fin dalla mia fanciullezza. Questo pensiero qualche volta mi consola davvero».
In Italia fu impegnato nell'insegnamento, a Brescia, Ancona, Salerno (66-70), a Desio (73-74), oltre che nel ministero a Nizza (74-76).
Ma di questa lunga tappa della sua vita sarà ricordato particolarmente il servizio di aiuto alla Segreteria Generale. Ufficio che ricoprì a Parma dal 70 al 73 e dal 79 all'89 e a Roma dall'89 al 2000. "P. Martini – ha scritto il P. Bob Maloney - era sempre disponibile, preciso e accurato nei vari servizi. Collaborando nella raccolta dati e mantenendo aggiornati quelli di ogni confratello, ha facilitato il lavoro delle varie Direzioni Generali. Ha fatto questo con tanta dedizione, fedeltà e in spirito di servizio».
Dal 2001 al 2004 fu a Vicenza e dal maggio del 2004 era in cura a Parma.
Il Signore lo riceva nelle sue dimore e lo ricompensi dei servizi resi alla Famiglia Saveriana.

Fr. Luigi Martini died in the Mother House, after a long illness, on 14 February 2012, aged 89 years.
He was born in Carbonara di Rovolon (Padua, Italy) on 30 January 1923, but he lived in Vicenza, where his family had set up home in 1924. He came into contact with the Xaverians in Vicenza and it was here that his missionary vocation was born «since my childhood, at least as a confused idea » (Foglio di informazioni,20.8.46).
He studied at the diocesan seminary from the fourth year of High School until the second year of Theology. In March 1945, upon the advice of bishop Zinato, he left the seminary and enrolled in the university of Padua, with the agreement that, upon obtaining his degree, a decision would be taken about his vocation.
But the following year, on 1 September 1946, Fr. Martini entered the Novitiate at S. Pietro in Vincoli. In his report, the bishop informed the novice master that the seminarian Martini «repeatedly asked, during the period spent outside the seminary, to be allowed to resume his ecclesiastical studies. He behaved well and remained in contact with the seminary» (14.11.46). The rector of the seminary, Mgr. Arena, attached an emphatic statement: «Martini has always behaved in an exemplary manner … he faithfully observed the rules …. and always cultivated the ecclesiastical spirit» (3.12.46).
With the Novitiate, Fr. Martini embarked on the final phase of his formation journey. He made his First Profession on 12 September 1947 and then attended the fourth year of Theology in the seminary of Parma (1947-48). He served as assistant to the students at Ancona for one year (1948-49) and, on 25 March 1950, he was ordained priest in Piacenza.
He was now ready to go and «teach the true religion to the ignorant» (Foglio di informazioni, 20.8.46). The Superiors, however, asked him to work in Italy, also because he had some health problems. He served as treasurer at Cremona and then taught at Cremona and Vicenza. Fr. Martini liked teaching but, at Vicenza for example, he found it quite demanding to do seventeen hours a week teaching Italian, fulfill his many ministerial commitments and also attend university. For this reason, he was transferred to Parma two years later, in 1953, where he was given the task of Propaganda in the publications sector. He carried out this activity with good results, but for just one year.
In 1954 he was assigned to South Brazil. Fr. Martini remained in South Brazil from 1954 un til 1966 and he worked in the parishes of Londrina–Vila Nova, Lupianopolis, Curitiba and Cafeara, where he built a modern parish church. From 1960 un til 1963 he taught in the seminary of Jaguapità. On 4 May 1960, he wrote: «I am happy here and I am kept very busy with these good young seminarians, whom I treat as brothers. I strive to make them work and I instruct them in the things of God and the things of the world».
In 1966, Fr. Martini re turned to Italy. It was a difficult return for him. On 17 January 1966, he wrote to the Superior General: «Help me at least with a prayer and believe me when I say that I am always trying to do what is best, as I have always done since I was a child. Sometimes this thought is a real source of consolation for me». In Italy he taught at Brescia, Ancona, Salerno (1966-70), Desio (1973-74) andserved in the pastoral ministry at Nizza (1974-76).
However, this long period of his life will be remembered especially for his service to the General Secretariat. He worked at this in Parma in two periods (1970-73; 1979-1989) before moving to Rome (1989-2000) for the same task. Fr. Bob Maloney writes: “Fr. Martini was always available, precise and accurate in the various services he carried out. He collaborated in the cataloguing of data and in keeping every confrere’s file up to date. He made the work of the various General Directions easier and he did so with great dedication, fidelity and in a spirit of service».
Fr. Martini was based in Vicenza from 2001 until 2004 and was then sent for nursing care to Parma, where he remained until his death.
