VITTORIO MENEGUZZO
All’Ospedale Generale di San Juan del Rio, alle 01.50 del 1° dicembre 2015, è morto P. Vittorio Meneguzzo colpito da crisi cardio-respiratoria.
Aveva 75 anni compiuti, essendo nato a Priabona di Monte di Malo (Vicenza – Italia) il 21.10.1940.
Agli inizi della storia della vocazione di P. Vittorio ci sono P. Bruno Cisco, allora animatore vocazionale della casa di Vicenza, e la mamma. “Una grande donna! – gli scriveva P. L. Piacere il 20.3.74 – Ha le idee chiare e la visione giusta delle cose di questo mondo e non solo di questo mondo … in questa vita non c’è nulla di buono se non amare il Signore, attendere la vita eterna, volersi bene e aiutarsi”.
Entrò all'Istituto nel 1953 a Vicenza dove frequentò le tre medie in quattro anni, causa malattia. Passò quindi a Zelarino per il biennio ginnasiale; nel 60-61 fece il Noviziato a San Pietro in Vincoli e emise la Prima Professione il 3.10.1961; frequentò il Liceo a Desio (61-63) e a Tavernerio (63-64). Dopo l’anno di propedeutica a Parma (64-65) e dopo il Prefettato a Udine studiò Teologia a Parma (66-70). Fu ordinato presbitero a Vicenza il 12.10.1969.
Negli anni di formazione ha tribolato non poco con la scuola perché frequenti mal di testa non gli consen-tivano una seria applicazione allo studio. Aveva la sua rivalsa nel settore della musica ove riusciva discre-tamente. I formatori inoltre segnalano la sua disponibilità per i lavori manuali: “Si dà sempre da fare”.
Dopo l'ordinazione fu impegnato nell'animazione vocazionale in Spagna nella comunità di Pamplona (’70-’72). Si iscrisse all’Università di Navarra per il Master in Artes Liberales. In occasione della presenta-zione del piano di studi consultò i Superiori perché, scriveva il 28.9.71, “vorrei che la scelta delle materie fosse quanto mai utile alla missione dove dovrei andare e al tipo di lavoro pastorale che mi attende”.
Nel1972 fu inviato in Messico. Ebbe l’incarico di insegnante e animatore vocazionale nel Seminario minore di San Juan del Rio (‘72-‘76). Nel ’76 fu destinato all’Instituto Cultural de Occidente (ICO) dove, -escluso il biennio ’91-’93 trascorso a Roma per il conseguimento della licenza in Missiologia presso la Pontificia Università Urbaniana- svolse la sua trentennale attività, fino al 2007. Fu insegnante di storia dell’arte (‘76-‘94), cappellano dell’ospedale (‘76-‘87), bibliotecario (‘77-‘84; ‘95-‘07), Direttore della Primaria (‘83-‘91; ‘95-‘05) e, naturalmente, ministero e animazione vocazionale.
Nella lettera al Superiore Generale del 4.3.62 scriveva: “Lei ben sa che non sono un ‘lottatore’ nel campo della vita e che il mio mondo è essenzialmente ‘volcado hacia el interior”’. E il Superiore in risposta lo incoraggiava: “Capisco che il tuo carattere ti porti a riflettere e a soppesare in maniera eccessivamente ‘accurata’ ogni impressione, ma cerca di superare questi sentimenti che ti impediscono di attendere serenamente al tuo lavoro. Impegnati come so che stai facendo…” (16.3.82).
Ma, se non era un ‘lottatore’, P. Vittorio era profondamente sensibile e intuitivo, così da intravedere e affrontare (in anticipo) problematiche poste, per esempio, dall’ecologia e dalla internazionalizzazione. Ecologista della prima ora, documentato e impegnato, curò all’ICO la educazione al rispetto del creato introducendo l’ecologia come materia di studio e incrementando il riciclaggio dei rifiuti, tra le meraviglie di chi non riteneva tale attività decorosa per un presbitero.
Nell’ambito dell’internazionalizzazione seppe – è la testimonianza di P. Antonio Flòres – radicarsi nella cultura messicana rispettando il ritmo delle persone: non acriticamente bensì con l’occhio dello studioso di storia”.
Dal 2007 risiedeva a San Juan del Rio, sempre disponibile per il ministero, fraternamente assistito dai confratelli e dagli studenti
Vittorio, ’volcado hacia el interior’ ha realizzato i suoi desideri “confidando più che mai – lo scritto è del 15.4.69 - nella forza santificatrice dello Spirito Santo e nell’abbondanza dei suoi doni mentre mi sorregge la fiducia dell’amicizia del Cristo Gesù, Maestro dell’apostolato, consolazione e gioia segreta di ogni mio giorno di vita”.

Fr. Vittorio Meneguzzo died in hospital in San Juan del Rio (Mexico) on 1 December 2015. Born in Priabona di Monte di Malo (Vicenza – Italy), on 21 October 1940, he was 75 years old.
The birth of his vocation was due to Fr. Bruno Cisco (who was the vocation animator of the Vicenza House) and his mother, who, in the words of Fr. L. Piacere was “a great lady, with clear ideas and a right vision of the things of this world, and not only of this world … in this life all that matters is to love God, await eternal life, and love and help each other” (20.3.74).
Vittorio joined the Institute in 1953 at Vicenza where, because of illness, he completed the three years of junior high school in four years. He then moved to Zelarino for two years of senior high school; he did Novitiate in 1960-61 at San Pietro in Vincoli and made his First Profession on 3 October 1961; he attended Lyceum in Desio (1961-63) and Tavernerio (1963-64). After the introductory year in Parma (1964-65) and a year as Prefect in Udine, he studied Theology in Parma (1966-70). He was ordained priest in Vicenza on 12 October 1969.
During his formation years, he had considerable problems at school because frequent headaches prevented him from applying himself to study in a serious manner. He made up for this with a reasonable performance in music. His formators also highlighted his willingness to do manual work.
After his ordination he was assigned to vocation animation work in the community of Pamplona, Spain (1970-72). He enrolled in the University of Navarra to study for a Masters in Artes Liberales. He consulted his Superiors on the preparation of his study program because, in his own words :“I want to choose subjects that will be useful to the mission and the pastoral work that await me” (28.9.71).
In 1972 he was sent to Mexico where he worked as a teacher and vocation animator in the minor Seminary of San Juan del Rio (1972-76). In 1976 he was assigned to the Instituto Cultural de Occidente (ICO) where he worked for thirty years until 2007 (with the exception of a period of study at the Pontifical Urbaniana University in Rome, in the years 1991-93, for a Masters in Missiology). He taught the history of art (1976-94), and served as hospital chaplain (1976-87), librarian (1977-84; 1995-2007), Directory of the primary school (1983-91; 1995-2005) and, naturally, he also worked in the pastoral ministry and vocation animation.
In a letter to the Superior General on 4 March 1962, he wrote: “You are well aware that I am not a ‘fighter’ on the battlefield of life and that my world is essentially volcado hacia el interior. In his reply, the Superior General encouraged him: “I understand that your temperament leads you to reflect and weigh up every impression in an excessively precise manner, but try to overcome these sentiments that prevent you from doing your work serenely. Keep up the good work, as I know you are already doing …” (16.3.82).
Nevertheless, although he was not a ‘fighter’, Fr. Vittorio was profoundly sensitive and intuitive and this made him a man ahead of his times in ecology and internationalization. At the ICO, he introduced ecology into the school curriculum to promote respect for creation; he also encouraged the recycling of rubbish, to the amazement of those who thought that such activities were not appropriate for a priest.
Fr. Antonio Flores remembers his capacity for inculturation; “he put down roots in the Mexican culture and, with a true critical spirit and keen historical awareness, he knew how to respect the rhythms of each person”.
From 2007 onwards he resided in the community of San Juan del Rio, where he was always available for ministry and was fraternally assisted by the confreres and the students.
Fr. Vittorio, volcado hacia el interior, fulfilled his most profound desires “by trusting more and more in the sanctifying power of the Holy Spirit and in the abundance of His gifts; I am sustained by my trust in the friendship of Christ, who is the Master of the disciple, the consolation and secret joy of every day of my life”(15.4.69).
