A Flumini di Quartu (Cagliari), nella Residenza Sanitaria Assistita, gestita dalle Suore del Buon Pastore, il 5 dicembre 2009, intorno alle 7.30, è morto Fr. Sebastiano Murgia. Il suo fisico, debilitato da una nefrite cronica non ha retto a una sopravvenuta infezione generalizzata.
Aveva 84 anni compiuti, essendo nato a Desulo (Nuoro) il 6.7.1925.
Fr. Sebastiano fece domanda di entrare tra i Saveriani come aspirante coadiutore, nel giugno 1947. Aveva 22 anni e scriveva: «Già da tre anni sto coltivando questa vocazione sotto la direzione spirituale del mio parroco … Fino ad oggi ho fatto il pastore, ma sono ancora giovane e perciò disposto a imparare quel mestiere che mi sarà indicato. Ho frequentato le elementari fino all'inizio della quinta, però poi ho continuato a leggere molto».
Entrò, nell'ottobre 1947, nella casa appena aperta a Tortolì. Nel 1948 passò a S. Pietro in Vincoli per il Noviziato. Emise la Prima Professione a Parma il 3.12.1949. «Alquanto tenace nelle sue idee: ma la volontà è docile e obbediente.– osservava il P. Maestro – Non risulta che abbia particolari attitudini. Ha fatto pratica come calzolaio. Vive a sé, senza però essere singolare, né tanto meno, misantropo. Pietà, buona».
Dopo la Professione proseguì l'iter formativo in Casa Madre, a Desio, a Piacenza. «Alla Casa Madre faceva da calzolaio avendo imparato in Noviziato; a Desio, da calzolaio e da portinaio; a Piacenza, studiava da infermiere, frequentava l'Ospedale e, mattina e sera, faceva da sacrista nella Chiesa del Crocifisso» (Presentazione alla Professione Perpetua, 10.10.56).
Fr. Sebastiano riconosceva che in una comunità bisogna saper fare anche la parte di Marta e si dichiarava disposto a fare qualsiasi cosa, però preferiva l'attività pastorale: «mi sento portato prevalentemente a fare apostolato» (5.9.53). Per questo chiese di essere inviato in missione.
Il 26 ottobre 1955 era in Brasile, pronto, come scrisse a P. Generale, «a fare del mio meglio per la gloria di Dio e la salvezza delle anime».
Gli inizi furono piuttosto movimentati: dal 1956 al 1962 fu, successivamente, ad Antonina, Cerro Azul (dove il 2.12.56 emise la Professione Perpetua), Londrina, S. Paolo-Villa Diadema, Jaguapità, Lupianopolis. Comunità «di gente buona – scriveva al P. Sostituto (31.3.58) riferendosi in particolare a Londrina - io attendevo alla casa, alla chiesa e alla sacrestia e facevo catechismo in chiesa e nelle nostre scuole» (31.3.58).
Dal 1962 al 1980 fece parte della comunità di Jaguapità: addetto all'azienda agricola, e aiutante nelle cappelle. Quindi aiuto economo, addetto all'Opera Divina Provvidenza, catechismo e filmine nelle fazende e nelle scuole.
Dal 1980 al 1990 ricoprì l'incarico di economo nel seminario Saveriano di Laranjeiras do sul. Al riguardo P. Guarnieri scrive: «Molti ex seminaristi della nostra zona lo ricordano volentieri per la sua generosità, umiltà e dedizione nel cercare aiuti e benefattori per il seminario» (7.12.09).
Negli ultimi anni, Curitiba (93-98) e Laranjeiras (98-08), continuò ad operare nella pastorale, anche se con i limiti dovuti all'età.
«Era un uomo di preghiera – conclude P. Guarnieri – era un uomo di amicizia: visitava famiglie, conversava, creava e coltivava amicizie. Tutti lo conoscevano. Lo salutavano: gli volevano bene.
Aveva sempre qualche cosa da fare: cantare accompagnandosi con la fisarmonica, leggere una rivista (gli piaceva moltissimo Famiglia Cristiana), curare il giardino, attendere ai suoi gatti, fare le compre, cucinare il suo famoso minestrone.
Era un uomo col cuore “brasileiro”. Raccontava spesso fatti della sua vita senza parlare male dei confratelli. E senza lamentarsi delle sofferenze, delle incomprensioni, delle difficoltà di convivenza. Non si piangeva addosso! Un 'verdadeiro' sardo o (piú probabile) un 'verdadeiro' saveriano».
Il Signore accolga questo suo discepolo nel suo Paradiso.

Br. Sebastiano Murgia died on Dec. 5, 2009 at Flumini di Quartu (Cagliari, Italy), in the Residenza Sanitaria Assistita, which is run by the Good Shepherd Sisters. Already weakened by chronic nephritis, he finally succumbed to a widespread infection.
Born in Desulo (Nuoro, Italy), on July 6 1925, Br. Sebastiano was 84 years old.
He applied to join the Xaverians as an aspirant Brother in June 1947, when he was 22 years old. In his application, he wrote: «I have been cultivating this vocation for three years with the guidance of my parish priest, who is my spiritual director… Until now I have worked as a shepherd, but I am still young and I am therefore willing to learn whatever job is assigned to me. I attended primary school until the beginning of the fifth year, but I have continued to read a lot». He joined the Congregation in October 1947, in the recently opened house at Tortolì. In 1948 he moved to S. Pietro in Vincoli for Novitiate. He made his First Profession at Parma on Dec. 3 1949. His Novice Master observed: «He is somewhat tenacious in his ideas: but his will is docile and obedient. He does not seem to have any particular aptitudes, though he has had some practice as a shoe repairer. He keeps to himself, without being strange, much less a misanthropist. His piety is good».
After his Profession, he continued the formation program in the Mother house, at Desio and at Piacenza. «In the Mother House he worked as a shoe repairer, a job he had learned during the Novitiate; at Desio he did the same job and was also doorkeeper; at Piacenza, he studied nursing, attended the Hospital and served as sacristan in the Chiesa del Crocifisso» in the morning and evening (Presentation to Final Profession, Oct. 10, 1956).
Br. Sebastiano recognized that the role of Martha was necessary in a community, and he declared his willingness to perform any task, though he preferred pastoral activity: «I am more inclined to the apostolate» (Sept. 5, 1953). He therefore asked to be sent to the missions.
He arrived in Brazil on Oct. 26 1955 and, in a letter to the Superior General, he declared his readiness «to do my best for the glory of God and the salvation of souls».
During the initial years (1956-62) in Brazil, he moved around quite a lot: Antonina, Cerro Azul (where he made his Final Profession on Dec. 2, 1956), Londrina, S. Paolo-Villa Diadema, Jaguapità and Lupianopolis. In a letter to the Vicar General, he said that these were communities of «good people (referring especially to Londrina); I looked after the house, the church, and the sacristy, and taught catechism in the church and in our schools» (March 31, 1958).
In the period 1962-80, he was a member of the community of Jaguapità, where he worked in the community’s farming activity and as assistant in the chapels. He was then assistant administrator at the Opera Divina Provvidenza, he taught the catechism and showed audio-visual projections to the fazende and the schools.
From 1980 until 1990, he was administrator in the Xaverian Seminary of Laranjeiras do sul. In connection with this, Fr. Guarnieri writes: «many of our former seminarians fondly remember him and his generosity, humility and dedication to find help and benefactors for the Institute» (Dec. 7, 2009).
His last years in Brazil were spent in Curitiba (1993-98) and Laranjeiras (1998-2008), where he continued his pastoral work, despite the limits imposed by his advancing years.
«He was a man of prayer – concludes Fr. Guarnieri – he was a man of friendship: he visited families, conversed, created and cultivated friendship with people. Everyone knew him and greeted him: they all loved him.
He always had something to do: he sang accompanied by the accordion, read magazines (he was very fond of Famiglia Cristiana), he looked after the garden and his cats, went shopping and prepared his famous minestrone.
He was a man with a “Brazilian” heart. He would often tell the story of his life without speaking ill of the confreres. Nor did he complain of the suffering, misunderstandings and difficulties of community life. He did not indulge in self-pity! He was a true son of Sardinia or, more probably, a true Xaverian».
