Fr. Giuseppe Nocenti

All'ospedale Yos Soedarso di Padang, alle 11.45 del 24.3.1996, è spirato il Fr. Giuseppe Nocenti. In settembre avrebbe compiuto 85 anni, essendo nato a Martinengo (BG) il 17.09.1911.
Fr. Giuseppe entrò tra i Saveriani nel maggio del '33, all'età di 22 anni, dopo aver inutilmente bussato alla porta di altri Istituti e quando, lavorando come uomo di fatica in un ricovero di Alzano Lombardo, era praticamente il sostegno della sua famiglia. Dopo un anno di probandato fu ammesso al Noviziato e il 28.6.1935 emise la Prima Professione.
Iniziò quindi un prolungato servizio di cuoco e ortolano, svolto nelle comunità di S. Pietro in Vincoli ('35-'38), Parma ('38-'42), Poggio S. Marcello ('42-'47) e Ancona ('47-'49). Ma il pensiero di Fr. Giuseppe, che alla fine incominciava ad essere stanco di stare in cucina, andava continuamente alla missione. E chiedeva di prepararsi in qualche modo: "l'aspirazione mia finché non posso andare in missione: desidererei imparare a fare il falegname, infermiere in modo da essere più utile in missione" (Lettera 22.9.46).
Nel 1949 partì per la Cina che, per le note vicende politiche, dovette abbandonare dopo due anni. Fu quindi destinato alla nuova missione in Indonesia e nel settembre 1951 raggiunse Sumatra dove rimase per tutto il resto della sua vita.
Fr. Giuseppe, esclusi quattro anni trascorsi a Selat/Pandjang (’55) , a Bagansiapiapi (71-73) e a Dumai/Selat Panjang (‘73-’74), lavorò sempre a Padang, dapprima in seminario e poi come addetto alla Domus e catechista. E, finché le forze lo sostennero, sempre con entusiasmo e tanta saggezza..: “... lavoro non mi manca, la Biara è stata pulita tutta da capo a fondo, stanze corridoi, sopra e sotto e perfino i garaz ripoliti di bei colori: ora è più degna di ricevere Confratelli e Ospiti... l’orto da me incominciato ora è bello... anche alla Pastoran del Vescovo... così pure alle Suore ALI, ci vado anche là... e anche a Pekanbaru... Poi mi è stato dato senza aver chiesto lavoro catechistico secondo il mio desiderio...e così sono felice: stare con i giovani si è sempre giovani... e così passano i giorni beati e felici. Lavoro, preghiera, scuola... e non pare lunghi i giorni, anzi sono corti. Anche stamattina alle ore undici dicevo ai catecumeni che è più facile vivere bene che male. [...] E’ veramente vero: se si dà a Dio senza riserva... non si sente più le difficoltà...” (Lett. 29.9.74).
Fr. Nocenti era profondamente convinto che “... La vita è così corta che val la pena trafficarla bene... specialmente ora noi anziani... il tempo ci sfugge e non ritorna più... riguardo al tempo si può fare tanto bene se si vuole... basta un po’ di volontà... certo che è dura ma se si vuol essere contenti bisogna decidere di sacrificarsi... che poi vi è l’unzione della grazia se si sta attenti...” (Lett. 23.6.74).
E ripeteva in una lettera dell’1.12.89: “Anche se si è vecchi si può fare sempre tanto bene colla preghiera e colla sofferenza della vecchiaia, che poi tutti devono passare per quella via... non vi è altra via che conduce al cielo: la buona Vecchiaia”.
Che il Signore accolga accanto al Beato Guido Conforti questo nostro confratello buono e generoso.

Brother Giuseppe Nocenti died at 11:45am on March 24 1996 at the Hospital Yos Soedarso of Padang. He was 84 years old, born at Martinego (Bergamo) on Sept. 17 1911.
Br. Giuseppe joined the Xaverians at Alzano Lombardo in May 1933, at the age of 22, after having discerned his missionary vocation with other congregations and having worked in a nursing home at Alzano Lombardo. After a year of studies, he enter novitiate and professed Religious Missionary Vows on June 28 1936 at S. Pietro in Vincoli.
He then served as a brother at S. Pietro in Vincoli (1935-38), Parma (1938-42), Poggio S. Marcello (1942-47) and Ancona (1947-49), following especially the works in the garden and kitchen. His thoughts and dreams, however, looked ever beyond the kitchen walls, in overseas lands. He wrote: "As I dream of a future mission assignment, I now prepare myself with some useful trade, such as carpentry and nursing, so that I can contribute in the mission."
He departed for China in 1949, but because of the political instability and the situation of the Xaverians there, he was soon assigned to Indonesia. He reached Sumatra in 1951, where he spent the rest of his life, especially in Padang, in charge of the Domus, and as catechist. He served in Padang, except the four years he spent at Selat/Pandjang (1955-56), two at Bagansiapiapi (1971-73) and two more at Dumai/Selat Panjang (1973-74). As he dedicated himself to his mission field with enthusiasm and wisdom, he wrote: “Work is never lacking in my life, the Biara has been cleaned up from top to bottom, with better rooms and hallways, so that it can be a welcoming place for the confreres and guests… The garden looks good, as well as the bishop’s house, the convent of the Sisters of ALI. I go there and visit Pekanbaru… Without my knowledge, I was given the role of following catechism classes, and so I’m happy indeed: to stay with the youth is to be always young… and this is how you pass blessed and joy-filled days. Work, prayer, and school… and the days are never long enough to accomplish everything. It’s true: if we give to God without measure, we do not feel the difficulties…”
Brother Nocenti was convinced that "life is short, and it is good to do our best in it, especially for us who are a bit older than the rest... If we want, we have a lot of time to bring good to others; all that we need is the will! It's certainly a hard task, but if we want to be happy, we need to sacrifice ourselves... so that we can receive in the future the ointment of grace." In another letter, he said: "Even though we are advanced in age, we can share a lot of good with our prayer and with our self-giving, for everyone will go through this path... There is no other path that brings us to Heaven: to age gracefully." May the Lord grant him eternal Rest.

Panggilan Harus Dibayar
Keberhasilan karya misioner tak selalu diukur dari prestasi spektakuler. Penghayatan semangat melayani Tuhan sepenuh hati bisa terwujud dalam karya –karya yang sederhana. Bruder Giuseppe Nocenti adalah salah satu figur misionaris pelayan yang tak kenal lelah melayani.
Sebelum masuk novisiat Xaverian pada tanggal 16 Mei 1934, Giuseppe ( Yosep ) Nocenti sudah kenyang makan garam. Lahir dalam keluarga kurang mampu di Bergamo 17 November 1911, selepas kelas tiga SD, Nocenti sudah hares membanting tulang turut menghidupi keluarganya. Pada umur 17 tahun, misalnya, dia sudah menjadi perawat di rumah jompo Alzano, Lombardo.
Di situlah panggilan Nocenti mulai muncul. Menginjak umur 20 tahun, Nocenti sempat melihat film karya misionaris di Cina berjudul Sarang Rajawali – Rajawali Muda ( Il nido degli aquilotti ) yang waktu diputar oleh seorang misionaris dari Parma. Terkesan oleh semangat para misionaris yang tampak dalam dokumentasi itu, pencaharian panggilan Nocenti dimulai. Beberapa ordo dan kongregasi dilamar. Tapi, tak ada yang memberi jaminan bahwa Nocenti akan dikirim ke misi Cina. Lantaran harus memenuhi tugas wajib militer selama enam bulan, panggilan itu terpaksa diabaikan.
Selepas wajib militer, Nocenti masih belum yakin bahwa Tuhan memanggil. Tawaran untuk bekerja dirumah sakit militer ditampiknya. Dia pikir, menghidupi keluarganya masih adalah prioritas hidupnya. Tapi, sapaan untuk mengikuti jalan Tuhan terus menggema. “ Panggilan harus dibayar, “ pesan seorang suster yang terus terngiang.
Dia masuk Serikat Xaverian, S. Pietro in Vincoli, Ravenna 16 Mei 1934. Bergulat dalam pendalaman rohani, satu setengah tahun kemudian, tepatnya tanggal 28 September 1935, Nocenti mengikrarkan kaul pertamanya. Keinginannya untuk ditugaskan di Cina tak pernah surut. Sampai akhirnya, setelah 14 tahun berkarya di Italia, perutusan ke Cina tiba juga. Tanggal 17 Maret 1949, Nocenti berangkat ke Cina dari Marsiglia.
Di Cina, Nocenti berkarya di rumah Prokur. Lantaran situasi Cina makin parah, akhirnya oleh P. Castelli, tanggal 21 September 1951, Nocenti diminta meninggalkan Cina menuju Indonesia. Setelah singgah tiga hari di Jakarta, lantas Nocenti naik kapal menuju Padang. Karya kerasulannya mulai di Bagansiapiapi untuk melayani para penyandang kusta, Selat Panjang, dan Padang sebagai pengurus rumah tangga.
Memang karya yang ditangani Nocenti cukup sederhana. Di luar mengurus rumah tangga para pastor, Nocenti juga mengajar katekese pada anak – anak, baik di Gereja maupun di sekolah. Di sela –sela kegiatan itu, dia menghabiskan waktu untuk merawat anak –anak jalanan. Tapi, di setiap karya itu, tampak penghayatan misi Nocenti.
Pelayanannya tak bisa dilepaskan dari hubungan dekatnya dengan Tuhan. Devosi Maria lewat doa rosario tak pernah lepas dari kegiatan hariannya. Baginya, menyandarkan diri pada Maria adalah hiburan terbesar dalam karya. Pada Mgr. Gazza, Nocenti pernah menulis : Sebelum tidur aku bertanya, berapa rosario hari ini? Lalu aku tidur penuh bahagia.
Semangat kesederhanaan dan komitmen untuk menolong konfraternya cukup terasa. ‘Tak ada istilah sedang sibuk ‘ demikian seorang konfrater menggambarkan. Bagi saudara seserikatnya dan umat, Nocenti selalu punya waktu untuk melayani. Begitu berkobarnya semangat ini, Nocenti tak pernah lupa menanyakan apa ada yang kurang dari yang diberikannya. Dalam diri Nocenti yang wafat 12 Maret 1996 tampak semangat misioner yang melayani Kristus dalam sesama dengan sepenuh hati.
