1951 -2024
Sabato 27 luglio 2024, alle ore 20.30 circa, presso l’Ospedale Pascale di Napoli, Italia, è deceduto il nostro confratello p. Claudio Romeo Marano. Da alcuni giorni si trovava in terapia intensiva. P. Claudio avrebbe compiuto 73 anni tra poche settimane, essendo nato il 7 settembre 1951 a Melarolo di Trivignano, Udine.
Dopo le scuole elementari, il giovane Claudio entra nel Seminario diocesano Minore di Castellerio-Pagnacco (Udine). Dopo avervi frequentato la prima e ripetuto per due anni la seconda Media, su consiglio del parroco di Trevignano, Claudio continua il suo cammino vocazionale tra i Missionari Saveriani. Entra nella casa apostolica Saveriana di Udine il 30 settembre 1966, dove frequenta la III Media. Dal 1967 al 1969 è a Zelarino, Mestre, Venezia, per completare gli studi ginnasiali.
Dopo l’anno di Noviziato a Nizza Monferrato, Claudio emette la prima Professione Religiosa e Missionaria, il 12 settembre 1970.
Dal 1970 al 1974 si trova nella comunità di Tavernerio per frequentare e concludere gli studi della scuola Magistrale. Dal 1974 al 1980 prosegue la sua formazione filosofica e teologica a Parma. Nel 1976-1977 vive l’anno di “prefettato” nella casa apostolica di Vicenza.
A Parma emette la Professione Perpetua (04.12.1978) e riceve l’ordinazione presbiterale (23.09.1979).
Dopo l’ordinazione, p. Claudio viene inviato in Burundi, passando prima per Parigi per lo studio della lingua francese (1980-1981). Nel 1981 è a Minago, Burundi, per lo studio della lingua Kirundi. Qui è anche vicario parrocchiale ed economo della comunità Saveriana. Nel mese di luglio 1984, insieme ad altri confratelli, viene espulso dal Burundi. Viene richiamato in Italia con il compito di animatore missionario nello CSAM (Centro Saveriano di Animazione Missionaria) a Parma, dal 1985 al 1990.
Nel 1990 p. Claudio ritorna in Burundi dove rimane fino al 2015. In questi 25 anni di lavoro missionario, p. Claudio è impegnato nella fondazione, formazione e direzione del Centro Giovanile Kamenge di Bujumbura; nella pastorale giovanile dello stesso centro; economo locale, economo regionale (1993-1999), vice regionale (1993-1996); consigliere regionale (1996-1999), rettore della comunità Saveriana del Centro Giovanile di Kamenge (1996-2002). Dal 2002 al 2015 svolge il compito di Direttore del Centro Giovanile di Kamenge.
Il 9/12/2002, a Stoccolma (Svezia), p. Claudio ritira il premio “Nobel alternativo” che era stato assegnato al Centre Jeunes Kamenge "... per il loro esemplare e indomabile coraggio e compassione, che hanno rivelato che, anche dopo nove anni di guerra civile assassina, i giovani di differenti gruppi etnici possono imparare a vivere e costruire un futuro assieme in pace e armonia".
Nel 2015 p. Claudio viene richiamato in Italia. Qui svolge prevalentemente il servizio di animatore missionario: San Pietro in Vincoli (2016), a Parma come collaboratore del Museo d’Arte Cinese ed Etnografico (2017) e nella comunità Saveriana di Salerno fino al suo ultimo giorno (2017-2024).
«Carissimo Francesco,
grazie infinite per gli auguri in occasione del 25° di professione. Diciamoci la verità: non me ne ero accorto! Vivo alla giornata, come tutti gli uomini e donne del Burundi, con la paura e il timore di non esserci più domani. E se questo arriva, voglio fare compagnia a Victor (p. Vittorino Ghirardi, deceduto il 17 luglio 1994 a Bujumbura, Burundi, dove riposa, n.d.r.) in questo angolo della terra, assetata di vita e di pace.
Grazie per gli auguri, per l’amicizia che sempre ci dimostri, per l’amore con cui ci segui. Spererei dei segni più tangibili, ma sai, in fondo in fondo, per chi sta per lasciare, anche i miraggi fanno sperare… Un abbraccio» (bigliettino scritto a mano a P. A causa del deteriorarsi delle sue condizioni di salute, p. Claudio venne ricoverato in terapia intensiva presso l’Ospedale Pascale di Napoli. Qui il 27 luglio 2024 sale in Cielo per contemplare la Gerusalemme Celeste costruita sulla fratellanza e la pace!

«Il Centro di Kamenge è un luogo di incontro per i giovani, ragazzi e ragazze, tra i sedici e i trent’anni. Sono 40 per cento hutu, 40 per cento tutsi; gli altri sono giovani che vengono dai paesi vicini, anche questi spesso in guerra: Congo, Rwanda, Tanzania. Da 10 anni, questi giovani uomini e donne del Burundi hanno deciso di incontrarsi, di dialogare, di parlarsi. Giocare, festeggiare, imparare un mestiere, vedere un film, fare informatica…E lo fanno insieme. Facendo questo, i giovani hanno iniziato a salutarsi, a scoprire che hanno gli stessi problemi, che hanno subito le stesse ingiustizie, e insieme sognano la pace…»

1951 - 2024
On Saturday, July 27th, 2024, around 8:30 p.m., our confrere Fr. Claudio Romeo Marano passed away at Pascale Hospital in Naples, Italy. He had been in intensive care for several days. Fr. Claudio would have celebrated his 73rdbirthday in few weeks as he was born on September 7th, 1951, in Melarolo di Trivignano, Udine, Italy.
Young Claudio entered the Diocesan Minor Seminary in Castellerio-Pagnacco (Udine) after graduating from elementary school. He attended the first grade of middle school and, twice, the second grade; then, following the advice of the pastor of his parish in Trevignano, Claudio chose to continue his vocational journey among the Xaverian Missionaries. He entered the Xaverian casa apostolica (minor seminary) in Udine on September 30th, 1966, where he attended the third grade of middle school. From 1967 to 1969, he was in Zelarino-Mestre, Venice, to complete junior high school (gymnasium).
At the end of the novitiate in Nizza Monferrato (Italy), on September 12th, 1970, Claudio made his first religious and missionary profession.
From 1970 to 1974, he lived with the community in Tavernerio where he graduated from a teacher training school (scuola magistrale). From 1974 to 1980, Claudio continued his formation with philosophical and theological studies in Parma. In 1976-1977, he spent a year as “prefect” of students (i.e., assistant educator) in the casa apostolica in Vicenza.
He made his perpetual profession (December 4th, 1978) and was ordained a priest (September 23rd, 1979) in Parma.
After his ordination, Fr. Claudio was sent to Burundi, but first stayed in Paris for the study of French (1980-1981). In 1981, he studied the Kirundi language in Minago, Burundi. While in Minago, he served as assistant parish priest and treasurer of the Xaverian community. In July 1984, he was expelled from Burundi along with other confreres. Consequently, he was called back to Italy and received a new assignment: promoter of mission awareness at CSAM (Centro Saveriano di Animazione Missionaria) in Parma (1985-1990).
In 1990, Fr. Claudio returned to Burundi, where he would remain until 2015. In the course of those 25 years of missionary work, Fr. Claudio was involved in various tasks: the founding, training and direction of the Kamenge Youth Centre in Bujumbura; youth ministry in the same centre; local treasurer; regional treasurer (1993-1999); vice regional (1993-1996); regional councillor (1996-1999); rector of the Xaverian community in the Kamenge Youth Centre (1996-2002). From 2002 to 2015, he carried out the task of director of the Kamenge Youth Centre.
On December 9th, 2002, in Stockholm (Sweden), Fr. Claudio collected the “alternative Nobel prize” which had been awarded to the “Centre Jeunes Kamenge … for their exemplary courage and compassion in overcoming ethnic divisions during civil war so that young people can live and build a peaceful future together.”
In 2015, Fr. Claudio was called back to Italy, where he mainly carried out the service of promoter of mission awareness in: San Pietro in Vincoli (2016); Parma, as collaborator of the Museum of Chinese Art and Ethnography (2017) and, for the final part of his life, the Xaverian community in Salerno (2017-2024).
«Dear Francesco, thank you very much for the good wishes on the occasion of my 25th anniversary of profession. To say the truth, I forgot about it! I live by the day, like all men and women in Burundi, with the fear and dread of not being here tomorrow. And if this were to happen, I want to be in the company of Victor [i.e. Fr. Vittorino Ghirardi, who died on July 17th, 1994, in Bujumbura, Burundi, and there has been buried – ed.] in this corner of the earth that is thirsting for life and peace.
Thank you for the wishes, for the friendship which you always show us, for the love with which you follow us.

«The Kamenge Centre is a meeting place for young people, boys and girls, ages sixteen through thirty. They are 40 per cent Hutu and 40 per cent Tutsi; the remaining ones are young people coming from neighbouring countries that are often at war too: Congo, Rwanda, Tanzania. For the past 10 years, these young men and women from Burundi have decided to meet, dialogue, talk to each other, play games, celebrate, learn a trade, watch movies, do IT...
Due to his worsening health condition, Fr. Claudio was hospitalised in the intensive care unit at Pascale Hospital in Naples. From there, on July 27th, 2024, he went up to Heaven to contemplate the Heavenly Jerusalem which is built on brotherhood and peace!

They do it together and, in this manner, young people have begun to greet each other, to discover that they have the same problems, they have suffered the same injustices, and together they dream of peace...»
