P. Lino Pellerzi

A Parma, nella Cappella dei martiri, mentre con la comunità della Casa Madre iniziava la celebrazione eucaristica del 28.1.2009, è morto improvvisamente il P. Lino Pellerzi.
Aveva novantuno anni compiuti, essendo nato a Bergotto di Berceto (Parma) il 2.5.1917.
Nipote di P. Eugenio Pellerzi (1881-1942) entrò tra i Saveriani il 27.8.28 a Poggio S. Marcello (An) dove frequentò il ginnasio inferiore. Passò quindi a Grumone (Cr) per il biennio del ginnasio superiore. Nel settembre 1933 iniziò il Noviziato canonico a S. Pietro in Vincoli. Il 12.9.34 emise la Prima Professione. Fu quindi a Parma dove fece il liceo e poi, dopo due anni di prefetto a Poggio S. Macello, la Teologia. Fu ordinato presbitero a Parma il 21.3.42. «È di carattere pieghevole, ordinato e costante – si afferma nella presentazione alla Professione Perpetua – Si cura molto spiritualmente ed è schietto e aperto coi Superiori. Di zelo sentito e operoso».
Conclusi gli studi teologici, dopo tre mesi trascorsi a Poggio S. Marcello, fu inviato a fare il vicerettore nella comunità di Vicenza che in quel periodo era sfollata a Sovizzo, perché l’istituto, in città, era troppo vicino all’aeroporto e il pericolo di essere bombardati era tutt’altro che ipotetico.
Nel 45 fu fatto vicerettore della comunità di Parma. L’anno dopo fu destinato alla Cina: «Ricevo da Lei [P. Generale], come dal Signore medesimo, la destinazione alla Cina. È una incomparabile grazia di predilezione che mi ricolma l’animo di gioia, di gratitudine e di confusione insieme; ma ho un’immensa fiducia nel Signore» (19.11.46).
Ma la Cina rimase in pratica un sogno: per la politica ostile e persecutoria del governo popolare cinese specialmente nei confronti dei missionari esteri, anche al P. Lino non fu possibile raggiungere la missione alla quale era stato destinato. Dopo lo studio della lingua a Pechino, trascorse un paio d’anni a Tien-Tsin nella speranza di poter raggiungere Chengchov. Ma inutilmente: nel 1951 dovette lasciare il grande paese asiatico.
Rientrato in Italia e rimessosi in salute, nel 1952 fu mandato negli Stati Uniti dove visse e lavorò fino al 1991. Fu impegnato prevalentemente nella formazione: Direttore Spirituale a Holliston (53-56); Delegato Generale (56-59); Superiore a Petershan (59-61), Maestro dei novizi a Franklin e a Petersham (61-69); Superiore e successivi altri incarichi a San José (69-91).
Ha scritto di lui il P. Maloney: «Negli Stati Uniti il P. Pellerzi ha dato il meglio di sé. Preciso e deciso nei giudizi, equanime nelle valutazioni, gentile nel tratto. Nei vari servizi si è mosso pensando più agli altri che a se stesso e rimanendo sempre fedele anche quando è rimasto solo a San Josè in California. La sua è stata una scelta missionaria, vissuta con profondo spirito sacerdotale. Era orgoglioso della sua terra di origine, dei valori ricevuti dalla sua gente. Il suo servizio e la sua presenza non passavano inosservati ed erano apprezzati; i suoi suggerimenti, accolti e ascoltati. Non ha costruito edifici o chiese, ma ha aperto il suo cuore a chi cercava una parola di consolazione, una benedizione, e con un sorriso ha dato “quello che aveva da dare”».
Nel 1991 rientrò in Italia. Fece parte della comunità di Salerno, impegnato nei servizi pastorali richiesti dalle parrocchie della zona.
Nel 1993 fu destinato alla Casa Madre. «Qui –così il P. E. Baldin nell’omelia delle Esequie– P. Lino ha vissuto gli anni della sua vecchiaia con la gioia e la pace di chi sa di fare la volontà di Dio, nel posto che Dio ha scelto per lui. Si è dedicato con grande disponibilità alla celebrazione del sacramento della riconciliazione nel santuario del Beato Conforti. Ha vissuto con intensa partecipazione la vita comunitaria, fino al gesto libero e fedele del servire chi non era autosufficiente. E fino alla fine della vita lo hanno appassionato la ricerca di Dio e l’annuncio del vangelo. Coerentemente fedele ai valori che ha sempre vissuto e che hanno sostenuto la sua vita di cristiano e di missionario».
Il Signore lo accolga nel suo Regno.

Fr. Lino Pellerzi died suddenly on Jan. 28, 2009, in the Cappella dei martiri of the Mother House, as he was preparing to celebrate the Eucharist with the community.
Born in Bergotto di Berceto (Parma), on May 2 1917, he was 91 years old.
He was the nephew of Fr. Eugenio Pellerzi (1881-1942) and joined the Xaverians on Aug. 27 1928 at Poggio S. Marcello (Ancona), where he attended junior high school. He later moved to Grumone (Cremona) for two years of senior high school. In September 1933 he began the Novitiate year at S. Pietro in Vincoli and made his First Profession on Sept. 12 1934. He was sent to Parma for Liceo and then, after a two year period as prefect at Poggio S. Marcello, for Theology. He was ordained priest in Parma on March 21 1942. The presentation to Final Profession said about him: «he is a flexible, neat and steadfast person. He takes good care of his spiritual life and is sincere and open with his Superiors. His zeal is heartfelt and industrious».
At the end of his Theology studies, after spending three months at Poggio S. Marcello, he was appointed vice-rector of the Vicenza community, which had been moved to Sovizzo because the house in the town was too near the airport and there was a very real threat of being bombed.
In 1945 he was appointed vice-rector of the Parma community. The following year he was assigned to China: «I receive this assignment to China from you (the Superior General) as from the Lord himself. It is an incomparable grace that fills my heart with joy, gratitude and bewilderment too; but I have an immense trust in the Lord» (Nov. 19, 1946).
However, China was to remain just a dream: the hostile and persecutory policy of the Chinese government, especially towards foreign missionaries, made it impossible for Fr. Lino to go to the mission to which he had been assigned. After studying the language at Peking, he spent a couple of years in Tien-Tsin in the hope of being able to reach Cheng-Chow. All his efforts were in vain, and he was forced to leave China in 1951.
Once he had returned to Italy and his health improved, he was sent to the United States of America in 1952 and he lived and worked there until 1991. He worked mainly in Formation: as Spiritual Director at Holliston (1953-56), General Delegate (1956-59), Superior at Petersham (1959-61), Master of Novices at Franklin and Petersham (1961-69), Superior and other tasks at San José (1969-91).
Fr. Maloney writes: «Fr. Pellerzi gave the best of himself in the United States. He was accurate and firm in his judgments, impartial in his assessments and king in his dealings with others. In the various tasks he carried out, he thought more of others than himself and was always an example of fidelity, even when he remained on his own at San José in California. He lived his missionary vocation with a profound priestly spirit. He was proud of his origins and the values he had received from his own people. His service and his presence did not pass unnoticed and they were greatly appreciated; his suggestions were welcomed and listened to. He did not construct any buildings, but he opened his heart to those who needed words of consolation, a blessing, and he gave what he could with a smile».
He returned to Italy in 1991 and was sent to the Salerno community, where he worked in the pastoral ministry in the local parishes.
In 1991 he was assigned to the Mother House. At his funeral Mass, Fr. Baldin said: «Here Fr. Lino lived out the years of his old age with the joy and the peace of those who know they are doing God’s will, in the place God has chosen for them. He willingly made himself available for the sacrament of reconciliation in the Shrine of Blessed Conforti. He took part intensely in the life of the community, freely and faithfully service those who were not self-sufficient. And right until the end of his life, he had a deep passion for the search for God and the proclamation of the Gospel. He was constantly faithful to the values he had always lived and which sustained his life as a Christian and a missionary».
