P. Gaetano Perlini

Alle 01,00 del 30 agosto, a Parma in Casa Madre, si è spento il P. Gaetano Perlini. La sua parabola discendente ebbe praticamente inizio con l’operazione all’anca sinistra e si accentuò nel mese di luglio. Era prossimo ai 99 anni, essendo nato a Noceto (PR) il 29.10.1909.
P. Gaetano entrò tra i Saveriani a Parma nell’aprile 1930, fermamente determinato ad essere missionario per tutta la vita: «In ogni mio compleanno continuerò a chiedere il dono della perseveranza finale… anche per non tradire ciò che ho promesso al mio grande vescovo, Mons. Conforti, e al mio indimenticabile parroco, don Ormisda Pellegri» (9.10.90).
Sempre nel 1930, all’inizio del nuovo anno scolastico, passò a Grumone per il ginnasio superiore (30-32). «Ha tenuto sempre buona condotta dal punto di vista disciplinare ed irreprensibile dal punto di vista morale. Carattere aspro e difficile ad affarsi coi compagni. Pietà assai buona…» (Presentazione al Noviziato, 1932). Il cammino formativo proseguì a Parma, con l’anno di Noviziato (32-33), gli studi liceali e poi teologici(33-41), intercalati da due anni di prefettato a Massa Lucana (34-35) e Poggio S. Marcello (38-39). Fu ordinato presbitero a Parma il 29.3.1941.
Dopo l’ordinazione presbiterale, non essendo possibile partire per la Cina a causa della seconda guerra mondiale, fu impegnato (41-46) come propagandista ed economo a S. Pietro in Vincoli e poi a Castel Sidoli (PC): furono cinque anni di giornate missionarie, di ministero pastorale, di questue e di interminabili viaggi in bicicletta nelle campagne lombardo-emiliane.
Nel 1946 partì per la sospirata missione della Cina, con la prima spedizione saveriana del dopoguerra. Un viaggio, dal punto di vista logistico e alimentare, “avventuroso” e P. Gaetano ripetutamente lo segnalò nella corrispondenza con i superiori. Effettivamente il trattamento ricevuto era troppo lontano dal culto che P. Gaetano ebbe per l’ospitalità: «lui era quanto mai generoso nell’invitare a pranzo. Visibilmente onorava l’altro con il meglio di cui disponesse». (P. Azuma, ottobre 2008).
La permanenza in Cina fu molto breve: circa due anni di studio della lingua a Pechino, poi il ripiegamento a Pig-Sian e nell’ottobre 49 l’espulsione da parte delle autorità comuniste. Riparò a Macao, dove, dopo alcuni mesi di estenuante attesa, ricevette la destinazione alla nuova missione del Giappone.
Raggiunse Kobe il 6 marzo 50. «La guerra era finita da cinque anni, ma era come se fosse finita il giorno prima: rovine dappertutto e mancanza di cibo, povertà estrema. Anche i missionari dovettero soffrire per penuria di cibo” (P. Luca, Omelia messa esequiale).
P. Gaetano si dedicò inizialmente all’assistenza dei lebbrosi a Kanoya, poi a Takamatsu nell’isola del Shikoku, e infine ad Amami Oshima. Prestò questo servizio per una decina di anni poi accettò di lavorare nella pastorale parrocchiale: fu parroco a Kobayashi (58-61), Shibushi (65-70), Tano (72-78) e dal 1980 al 2001 fu incaricato della Chiesa di Kushima. Praticamente 51 anni di missione.
«Padre Gaetano Perlini, o "Il Peppo" come era affettuosamente chiamato tra noi saveriani, è stato senza dubbio una figura un pò straordinaria, ossia "fuori dall'ordinario"! La sua franchezza nel parlare, che a volte diventava anche irruenza, le iperboli delle sue invettive… convogliate nel suo zelo missionario… Era un uomo abitualmente sereno e spesso sorridente… Piuttosto indipendente e di iniziativa personale. Ma con un forte senso di appartenenza e un sincero attaccamento alla Congregazione di Mons. Conforti (il mio grande Vescovo, il nostro Fondatore). Portato all’azione. I suoi talenti erano la generosità nel dare e nel darsi, il coraggio nel prendere iniziative e nel portarle avanti, la fedeltà alla sua vocazione "saveriana", una fede semplice ma sicura». (P. F. Fr. Gaetano Perlini died in the Mother House, Parma, on August 30 2008. His decline began with a operation on his left hip and his general condition worsened in the month of July. Born in Noceto (Parma), on October 29 1909, he was 98 years old.
Fr. Gaetano joined the Xaverians in Parma in April 1930 with the firm resolve to be a missionary for his entire life: «On every birthday I shall continue to pray for the gift of final perseverance … also because I do not want to betray the promised I made to my great bishop, Mgr. Conforti, and my unforgettable parish priest, Fr. Ormisda Pellegri» (Oct. 9 1990).
At the beginning of the new academic year in 1930, he moved to Grumone for senior high school (1930-32). «He has always behaved well and is irreprehensible from a moral point of view. He has a harsh temperament and finds it difficult to get on with his companions. His life of piety is very good …» (Presentation to Novitiate, 1932). His formation continued in Parma, with the Novitiate year (1932-33), and liceo and theology studies (1933-41), which were interrupted for the two years he spent as prefect at Massa Lucana (1934-35) and one year at Poggio S. Marcello (1938-39). He was ordained priest on March 29 1941.
After his ordination, it was impossible to send him to China because the Second War World was being fought; he was therefore sent to S. Pietro in Vincoli, where he worked as treasurer and in propaganda, and then to Castel Sidoli (1941-46): these five years were spent doing mission appeals, pastoral ministry, looking for financial help and making unending bike journeys in the country areas of the regions of Lombardy and Emilia.
In 1946 he left for China with the first groups of Xaverians to go to that mission after the war. Logistical problems and food shortages made the journey quite an eventful experience, and Fr. Gaetano mentioned it repeatedly in his correspondence with the superiors because he «was very generous with invitations to lunch and treated guests to the best he had to offer» (P. Azuma, October 2008).
His stay in China was very brief: he spent two years studying the language at Peking and moved to Pig-Sian before he was expelled by the communists in October 1949. He went to Macao where, a few months later, he received an assignment to the new mission of Japan.
He arrived in Kobe on March 6 1950. «The war had ended some five years previously, but it was as if it had ended only the day before: ruins everywhere, lack of food, extreme poverty. Even the missionaries suffered because of the food shortages» (Fr. Luca, Homily at the funeral Mass).
Fr. Gaetano initially dedicated his energies to the care of lepers at Kanoya, and then at Takamatsu on the island of Shikoku, and finally at Amami Oshima. He worked at this task for ten years and then accepted an assignment to parish pastoral ministry: he served as parish priest at Kobayashi (1958-61), Shibushi (1965-70), Tano (1972-78); from 1980 until 2001 he was put in charge of the Church of Kushima. In all, he spent 51 years in the missions.
«Fr. Gaetano Perlini, or “Il Peppo”, as he was affectionately called by the Xaverians, was without a doubt an “out of the ordinary” character! He was well known for his frankness, which sometimes became vehemence, and the exaggeration of his tirades … all channeled into his missionary zeal … He was usually serene and often smiling … He was quite independent and a man of personal initiative. Nevertheless, he had a strong sense of belonging to the Congregation of Mgr. Conforti. He was very active and had a talent for giving and self-giving with generosity; he courageously took initiatives and pressed ahead with them; he was faithful to his Xaverian vocation and had a simple but solid faith » (Fr.
