Missionario in Cina ed in Sierra Leone; Procuratore per le Missioni Saveriane. Di anni 81. Sepolto a Parma
Nacque a Levizzano di Baisio (RE) il 25.XII.1903 da Alberto e Mercati Erminia. Conclusi gli studi liceali, il 27.IX.1922 entrava a Parma nell'Istituto di Mons. Conforti. Respirò con gioia sempre crescente il forte clima missionario che si viveva tra i figli di Mons. Conforti.
Per la Giornata Missionaria Mondiale dell'ottobre 1980, parlando a Roma nella Cappella delle Clarisse Messicane egli ricordava quegli anni e riassumeva tutta la sua vita missionaria con queste stupende parole:
"Parlare delle Missioni e parlarne a se stessi è come cantare la vostra canzone: 'Mexico querido y lindo'. Il cuore, la mente, la memoria vanno a quel momento che non si ripeterà più, ma sarà sempre presente all'anima, soprattutto al cuore, per darne grazie a Dio. Il momento di una parola quasi infantile, generosa di una generosità senza raziocinio, nata da uno slancio del cuore, che dice a se stesso: 'Andrò missionario anch'io! Si può davvero paragonare al primo amore, quando quattro occhi si incontrano all'improvviso, due cuori hanno un sussulto e gli occhi brillano parlandosi gioiosi. È amore, non passione. È la fiamma della vita che si sprigiona. È così che vedo alla distanza di sessant’anni e mi meraviglio ancora di quel momento, di quella parola che dissi a quattordici anni, senza neppure comprenderne la portata. Il primo amore che Dio stesso custodì nel mio cuore, silenziosamente, fino alla maturazione, fino al passo finale, quando nel freddo gelido della pianura, nella Cappella dell'Istituto, essa pure gelida, mi riscaldavo a quell'amore di Dio che mi spingeva. Le Missioni erano allora di tutt'altra fattura. Allora erano fatte ancora di molti sacrifici, ma non si aveva paura. Non temevamo il sacrificio. I mezzi erano secondari, perché guardavamo solo al fine: portare la fede a coloro che non l'avevano. Era entusiasmo puro che non teneva conto della vita pratica, ma cosa importava? Alla nostra vita futura avrebbe provveduto Dio stesso. Noi non dovevamo fare al-tro che seguirlo...".
P. Vaccari fece il Noviziato con il P. Bonardi ed emise la Professione il 4.X.1923 nelle mani del Fondatore e dallo stesso venne ordinato Sacerdote il 24.11.1927 assieme ad altri 9 Confratelli, in una giornata che lo stesso Mons. Conforti ebbe a definire: "Questo lo considero uno dei giorni più belli nella storia della nascosta ed umile nostra Società, e uno dei giorni più belli del mio Episcopato", alludendo al grande numero degli Ordinati.
Dopo aver trascorso alcuni anni nella Scuola Apostolica di Vicenza e ricevuto il Crocifisso nell'ultima funzione tenuta dal Fondatore nella Chiesa di S. Pietro a Parma, il 30.IX.1931 partiva Missionario per la Cina, imbarcandosi sulla nave 'Venezia' assieme ai Confratelli Poli, Sinibaldi e Mario Frassinetti. Destinato alla Diocesi di Cheng-chow, nell'Honan Occid., vi lavorò per alcuni anni; fu in seguito impegnato a Tientsin come Procuratore delle Missioni ed a Pechino. Più volte durante gli anni della Cina, egli ebbe a scrivere a Superiori e Confratelli manifestando la sua Convinzione sulla necessità di aprire per un avvenire dell'Istituto fondazioni in altre nazioni.
Richiamato dalla Cina alla fine del 1947, iniziò per lui un nuovo capitolo di vita, impegnato nella formazione in Italia, Gran Bretagna e Stati Uniti e per 4 anni nella nuova Missione in Sierra Leone. Ovunque egli ebbe modo di manifestare l'inventiva tecnica di cui era dotato il suo poliedrico ingegno...; in Sierra Leone come negli U.S.A. i Confratelli amavano chiamarlo "Jack of all trades" (...uomo tuttofare...). Fisicamente forte, pur non essendo robusto, aveva una fibra di eccezionale resistenza per la guida dell'auto: negli U.S.A. macinò Km. per giornate intere. Dal '65 al '70 venne richiamato a Parma come Procuratore delle Missioni, e quindi trascorse 10 anni a Roma impegnato per ministero e per mansioni varie alla Direzione Generale e nel Collegio Conforti.
Nel 1980 venne aperta a Castelgandolfo la Scuola per i Catechisti delle varie Missioni: P. Vaccari prestò per 3 anni la sua assistenza spirituale. Il Signore lo chiamò a se all'improvviso e mentre guidava: in un incidente stradale avvenuto sulla Via Salaria.

Fr. Noel Vaccari died in Rome on Jan. 9 1984, victim of a fatal car accident of which he had been the victim, the previous day. He was 80 years old, born at Levizzano di Baiso (Reggio Emilia) on Dec. 25 1903.
Fr. Vaccari entered the Xaverians at the age of 19, in 1922, after having completed his secondary-school education in the state schools. He made his first religious profession on Oct. 4 1923 in Parma and was ordained priest on Feb. 24 1927 by the hands of the Founder, together with other 9 Confreres. Conforti remarked of that day: “I consider this one of the most beautiful days of the history of our hidden and humble Congregation, and one of the most beautiful events of my Episcopate.” After ordination, he spent two years at Vicenza and two years at Grumone as vice-rector. Before leaving for China, Fr. Noel received the Crucifix at the last Departing Ceremony of our Founder on Sept. 30 1931, together with Frs. Poli, Sinibaldi and M. Frassinetti. He remained in China until 1947 and worked in the diocese of Cheng-chow for six years, then at Tientsin as procurator of the missions (1937-38) and afterwards to Peking as superior of the house.
He was recalled to Italy in 1947, and became vice-rector of the Mother House in Parma for more than one year. In 1949 he was sent to England to prepare himself to go to Sierra Leone. In fact, at the end of 1951, he went to the mission of Makeni as the religious Superior and later on (1953-54) he also became the Pro-Apostolic Prefect.
In 1955 he was sent to Glasgow to run the house there, but he remained there a little more than one year. He returned to Parma and in 1958 he was sent to the USA where he acted as general delegate (1959-61) and later superior of the house of Franklin (1962-64). Everywhere he went, he showed his technical creativity, and was often called by confreres “Jack of all trades.” Memorable are his stories about the many miles he drove between the East and the Midwest of the USA for mission appeals and visiting confreres.
He returned once again to Italy in 1965, as procurator of the missions until 1970. After a brief period spent in Glasgow in 1972, he was recalled to Rome where he accepted the job of safeguarding the property and assets of Viale Vaticano 36/40, in expectation that the project for construction of the new headquarters of the General Direction be approved.
In 1980 the Society for the Propagation of the Faith asked him to take up an appointment as spiritual director of the Catechists residing at Castelgandolfo, gathered there from all over the world, for a period of preparation for their apostolic work. That job lasted until the month of Oct. 1983. In the last few months of his life, even if he preserved a youthful spirit, his health began to give signs of yielding. In fact, in the month of Jan. 1984 he would have been transferred to Parma, but the Lord’s plan was different. He die in Rome, a city which was so dear to Fr. Vaccari.
On World Mission Sunday 1980, Fr. Vaccari spoke in the chapel of the Mexican poor Clare’s Sisters. Recalling his missionary vocation he said: “To talk about the missions... is like singing your song ‘Mexico querido y lindo’ The heart, the mind, the memory bring you to the moment when you answered God’s calling, the moment which will always be present to the soul, to the heart so as to be thankful to God. It was the moment of a child’s word coming from the generosity of the heart, more than any rational reasons, born from an impulse of the heart, which says: ‘I will be a missionary myself.’ One can compare it to the first love, when four eyes meet for the first time, two hearts beat, and the sparkling eyes happily speak. It is love, not simple passion. It is the flame of life that breaks out. Sixty years have gone and I still remember that moment, that word that I said when I was fourteen, a word whose complete meaning was still unknown to me. This was my first love that God himself kept into my heart, silently, until the final step when in the cold of the Padana plain, in the cold of the Chapel of the Mother House, I was warming up to the love of God who was calling me. Back then, the Missions were different. We were not afraid of sacrifices... because we were concerned only about the goal: to bring the faith to all those who didn’t know Christ. It was simple enthusiasm that didn’t care about some aspects of practical life. Did it matter? God Himself was at our side.”
Fr. Vaccari leaves behind himself the memory of a generous person, gifted with great talents in the practical field, and at the same time, rich in a deep spirituality lived in prayer and nourished by substantial and excellent readings. He knew how to edify by his example and by his life, and how to sow in the field of the Lord with happiness.
